How to Disable AVG Components


Please Note: The steps in this article relate to the AVG AntiVirus or AVG Internet Security products. If the instructions below do not apply to your product, you may be using the newer AVG Internet Security - Unlimited.

Disabling All Components

AVG components protect your computer on multiple levels. If you need to disable all AVG components at once, please follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the AVG icon in the system tray next to the clock.
  2. Click Temporarily disable AVG protection.
  3. Choose how long you want the protection to be disabled and whether to disable the Firewall as well, and then click OK.

You can disable AVG also from the Advanced settings:

  1. Open the AVG Program.
  2. On the Options menu, click Advanced settings.

  3. Select Temporarily disable AVG protection in the menu on the left side.
  4. Click the Temporarily disable AVG protection button.

  5. Choose how long you want the protection to be disabled and whether to disable the Firewall as well, and then click OK.

Disabling Specific Components

To disable specific AVG components, follow the instructions below under the component you wish to disable.

Note: Do not forget to activate the disabled component(s) again once you have performed the tasks requiring its deactivation.

Computer protection (Resident Shield)

The Computer component ensures full protection of your computer from the inside, which makes it useful even if your computer is not connected to any network at the moment. It can detect all known types of viruses and spyware, including sleeping threats and rootkits.
To disable the component:

  1. Open the AVG program.
  2. Click the Computer component.

  3. In the Anti-Virus section click the switch to change it to Disabled (red).

Web browsing protection (LinkScanner, Online Shield)

The Web Browsing component ensures full protection of your computer from the Internet. It can detect all known types of viruses and spyware, and also complex threats such as exploits and malicious websites.
To disable the component: 

  1. Open the AVG program.
  2. Click the Web Browsing component.
  3. In the LinkScanner Surf-Shield section click the switch to change it to Disabled (red).
  4. In the Online Shield section click the switch to change it to Disabled (red).

Identity protection (Identity Protection, Identity Alert)

The Identity component protects your computer by constantly monitoring all running applications and processes, watching for any potentially malicious activity. It also checks regularly whether your personal details have not become a subject of misuse on the Internet. 
To disable the component:

  1. Open the AVG program.
  2. Click the Identity component.
  3. In the Identity Protection section click the switch to change it to Disabled (red).
  4. In the Identity Alert section click the switch to change it to Disabled (red) if available. 

Email protection (E-mail Scanner, Anti-Spam)

The Email Scanner component offers complete protection of your e-mails from viruses, spyware, and spam. 
To disable the component:

  1. Open the AVG program.
  2. Click the E-mails component.
  3. In the E-mail Scanner section click the switch to change it to Disabled (red).
  4. In the Anti-Spam section click the switch to change it to Disabled (red) if available. 

Firewall

The AVG Firewall component controls all network traffic on your computer. Based on its settings, it allows or blocks attempts to connect to a network and send or receive any kind of data over a network.
To disable the component:

  1. Open the AVG program.
  2. Click the Firewall component.
  3. Next to the Firewall Mode option, click Change.
  4. Select the option Turn firewall protection off
  5. Click OK.
