How to uninstall AVG Toolbar homepage and Secure Search from your browser

Instructions

This article will guide you through removal of AVG Web TuneUp, AVG Toolbar and Secure Search from your browser.

Important: After uninstalling AVG from your browser, you may need to close and open the browser one more time to restore your previous homepage.

Additionally, the uninstallation steps are different for Google Chrome. If you are a Chrome user, please refer to the specific steps in the middle of this article. 

Uninstall from Windows Control Panel

Select your operating system for step-by-step instructions:

Windows 10

  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Select Programs and Features 
  3. Select  AVG Security Toolbar, AVG SafeGuard Toolbar or AVG Web TuneUp and click uninstall
  4. You may receive the message:
    The following application must be closed before continuing the uninstall
    If you receive the message, close all your browser windows and then click Retry 
  5. Tick the option Revert your browser's default search provider..., and then click Remove

Windows 8

  1. Right-click in the lower-left corner of your screen, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Uninstall a program or Programs and Features.
  3. In the list of applications double-click AVG Security Toolbar, AVG SafeGuard Toolbar or AVG Web TuneUp. The uninstallation will be launched.
  4. You may receive the message:
    The following applications must be closed before continuing the uninstall.
    If you receive the message, close all your browser windows and then click Retry.
  5. Tick the option Revert your browser's default search provider..., and then click Remove.

Windows Vista or 7

  1. Open the Start menu, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Uninstall a program or Programs and Features.
  3. In the list of applications double-click AVG Security Toolbar, AVG SafeGuard Toolbar or AVG Web TuneUp. The uninstallation will be launched.
  4. You may receive the message:
    The following applications must be closed before continuing the uninstall.
    If you receive the message, close all your browser windows and then click Retry.
  5. Tick the option Revert your browser's default search provider..., and then click Remove.

Windows XP

  1. Open the Start menu, and then click Control Panel (or Settings, and then Control Panel).
  2. Click Add or remove programs.
  3. In the list of applications double-click AVG Security Toolbar, AVG SafeGuard Toolbar or AVG Web TuneUp. The uninstallation will be launched.
  4. You may receive the message:
    The following applications must be closed before continuing the uninstall.
    If you receive the message, close all your browser windows and then click Retry.
  5. Tick the option Revert your browser's default search provider..., and then click Remove.

Google Chrome Users

Are you a Google Chrome user? If so, please follow the specific steps for Chrome browser below.

I am a Google Chrome user

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the Settings button in the right part of the address bar.

  3. Click More tools, and then click Extensions.
  4. In the list of installed extensions please click the trash icon next to AVG Secure Search, AVG Web TuneUp or AVG Search App powered by Ask extension

    and then click Remove.
  5. In the left menu click Settings.
  6. In the section On startup select Open the New Tab page.
  7. In the section Search use the drop-down menu to change the search engine from AVG Secure Search to your preferred one (e.g. Google).
  8. Restart Google Chrome.
 

AVG Secure Search is still active in my browser

If you already uninstalled the AVG Toolbar or Web TuneUp from Control Panel and you continue to see the AVG Search page in your browser, please follow these instructions for your browser:

Google Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the Settings button in the right part of the address bar, and then click Settings.

  3. In the section On startup select Open the New Tab page.
  4. In the section Search use the drop-down menu to change the search engine from AVG Secure Search to your preferred one (e.g. Google).
  5. Restart Google Chrome.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox.
  2. Click the Options menu, and then click Options.

  3. Switch to the Search tab, and change the Default Search Engine to your preferred option, e.g. Google.
  4. Restart Mozilla Firefox.

Internet Explorer 11

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the cogwheel button next to the address bar, and then click Manage add-ons.
  3. Click Settings in the section Search.
  4. Right-click AVG Secure Search, and then click Remove.
  5. Click Close.

Internet Explorer (older versions)

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the cogwheel button next to the address bar, and then click Internet options.
  3. Click Search Providers in the left menu.
  4. Right-click AVG Secure Search, and then click Remove.
  5. Click Close.
