AVG tray icon showing red cross, but I'm protected??
I have AVG Free, and used for years with no issues. However, now the tray icon has a red cross through it, but the program states, 'I am protected', and my virus definitions and program are all up to date. How do I get rid of the red cross?
Spoke too soon - issue back again. As you can see, tray icon has cross through it, but program indicates all OK. So, which is wrong, do I have protection or not?
Stephen, Sorry to hear that the issue persists. Let us know the version of AVG you have installed and share the screenshot of AVG user interface to look into it. Open AVG Antivirus Free -> Menu -> About -> check its version.
Thank you for the screenshot, Stephen. Could you please check with the user interface of AVG Antivirus free on your PC and provide us with the screenshot? Restart your PC once and monitor the status. Keep us updated to proceed further.
A reboot did nothing, the 'fault' persisited. So, I went old school. Removed AVG using the uninstall function, and reinstalled a fresh version. All appears to be OK now, though it's only been an hour! So never fully got behind why it happened in the first place, and shame it couldn't be 'fixed', but at least for now, all seems OK.
Hello Stephen, Thank you for updating the status. We have released a revamped version of AVG AntiVirus and this fixed the issue you experienced. If your AVG program prompts a 'Reboot', the icon will have a cross symbol at the system tray. Rebooting the device will resolve the issue usually. If we can be more of help, never hesitate to let us know.
If AVG ever propmts a 'reboot' I do it instantly as I'm a bit paranoid with a virus infection! However, even after a reboot, whilst loading the icon appeared normal, but after a few minutes, the cross appeared despite the program showing I was fully protected. Out of interest, what is the 'revamped' version number you have released?
We appreciate your efforts in reinstalling & being cautious about the infections, Stephen. The revamped version number is 19.4, which you've got on your computer. It seems that the patches were unable to apply to your program earlier, even after the restart. Hence, it might be the reason. Would you be so kind to ensure us that the issue is fixed currently?
It's back!! I just rebooted to apply a Windows 7 update, and the AVG icon has a cross through it, with the program telling me I'm protected. PLEASE can someone tell me how to fix this? I'm getting bored with this error now...
Sorry to hear that the issue persists. We have sent you an email requesting logs to escalate this case. Our senior team will determine the exact cause and get back to you via email.
Thank you for your continued support. The issue now seems to be resolved, but if you're interested, this is what I think may have happened.
The AVG error appeared after my laptop rebooted after a windows update. In the last couplke of weeks, windows updates have includeed a 'fujitsu' battery BIOS update to stop their batteries exploding. I have in the past simply closed the update popup. Hoewever, this morning I got titred of seeing the darn thing, so allowed Fujitsu to update the BIOS following a reboot.
When it had finished, and yet another automated reboot, AVG powered up as normal. Now, I know it may be just coincidental, but I'm not a great believer in coincidence, and may have stumbled upon the 'cause & effect'. I think that on rebooting, having the Fujitsu update popup may have interefered with AVG loading incorrectly, making the icon have a hissy fit! Coulkd be wrong, but it's all I got...
Thank you for updating the status. Yes, at times the windows update will have the workaround as the programs are installed in their platforms. We request you to keep checking the status with AVG and if it happens again, do report it to us immediately.
I am having this same problem as Stephen. As he did I even re-installed the AVG internet security and much like him the red x went away. This red x later came back just as his did.
What is going on? Much like him, if I float over icon, it says I am protected.
Just to update - I have now completed the diagnostic program as requested by AVG and forwarded the results. Am now just awaiting their response... (Nice to know I'm not the only one with this issue)
I unstalled the program and re-installed. After a few days, the red x comes back even thought it says I am protected and all areas are green. FYI, I am running Window 7 home p
Thank you for providing us the information, Fred. Would you be so kind to ensure us that you've used AVG Clear tool to remove the AVG files completely & reinstalled?
"I am running Window 7 home premium", inrteresting we are running the same OS. Wouoldn't surprise me if a recent MS update has screwed things up. They constantly apply updates which screw current working things into being non operational! Temprarily, I have disabled AVG notifications in that the tray icon is no longer visible, what I can't see doesn't bug me LOL
Well, at the moment, it tells me with the red cross in the icon that it's not working, and yet it also tells me I'm fully protected. So, until you fix it, I'd rather not be confused LOL
Stephen, i understand your concern. Please do not worry, this issue has been escalated to the senior most technicians. We will make sure to provide a best solution as early as possible.
Update, I have uninstalled as you suggested with the clear tool, reinstalled my licensed copy of internet security. For a little while the red x went away, but eventually it came back. I notice that the product has not been updated since April 9th, the latest release. I suspect this problem started about then. My guess is that this problem will not be solved until a new release. Again, like Stephen I am running windows 7 home premium. My other PCs running windows 8 and windows 10 do not experience this problem.
Update, I did delete the internet security with the delete tool. After a few days the red x returned. I suspect that this started around April 9th which was the latest release of Internet Security. I do have window 7 home premium like Stephen. My other two pcs having windows 8 and 10 are working.
Hi Fred, We realize the situation and moving further, we will need to analyze the issue with our senior team. They will check whether this is with the specific operating system. We will keep you posted once we receive an update from them. Did AVG do something because for the last few days?, Neither the red X nor the exclamation point are showing. Stephen did you get same results? It had alway showed up with "You are Protected" when you float over AVG icon.
mmm... I didn't want to say anything in case I jinxed it, but yes, in the last week, and after some testing reboots, AVG does appear to be behaving itself, so they well have added a subtle fix in an update and not told us LOL
Well, after a few weeks of AVG behaving itself, and surviving several reboots, this morning AVG updated and forced my laptop to reboot - this time, the darn red cross reappeared! AVG, please can you stop mucking around and just fix your program??
We're sorry to know that the issue persists, Stephen. In this regard, we may need to escalate this to our next level of support to investigate further on it. To do so, we need few logs from your computer. An email including the steps to collect & upload logs has been sent to you via ticket # 08456679. Please follow those steps.
Thank you Dinesh. Over 30 years ago (I'm quite old LOL), I learned BASIC computer coding. It was a simple life, in that if 'X' was true, follw 'Y'. I genuinely can't see why such a sophistacted prorgran such as AVG doesn't have a line of code instructing, 'if AVG states You Are Protedted, don't put a big red cross in the tray icon!'. Anyway, I no longer have the patience to persue this issue. I have simply 'hidden' the tray icon so I don't have the irritation of looking at it...
We understand your concern, Stephen. We have notified this to the concerned team & we hope that it should be dealt in the upcoming update. Thank you for your understanding in advance!
I too found the red "x" on my tray icon today ... I have a paid AVG account, runing Windows X, and scan done today, all updates installed, all features in the green -- EXCEPT THE RED X
We are sorry to hear that. Do you confirm that the issue is with your Windows XP SP3 PC? To locate your account details, create your own post on our community or contact us through chat using this https://support.avg.com/support_sales_chat link. Thank you.
This isn't the usual behavior of AVG program.
In this regard, please try repairing the program once & check if it helps.
