file shield on my mac won't turn on no matter what i do.

Please share the screenshot http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot of your AVG program where it shows that "File Shield" is disabled and let me know the version of Mac you are using.

Please follow the steps from this link https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG-AntiVirus-for-Mac to uninstall AVG AntiVirus on your Mac computer and click on this link https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-download-and-install-AVG-AntiVirus-for-Mac to install the latest version.

If the issue persists after the reinstallation, please let us know and we will assist you further.

i reinstallation and it still says the file shield is turned off.

Which version of Mac OS are you running? Could you share a screenshot (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201361) of 'Security & Privacy' settings window where you allow the software extension?
