AVG Tuneup Stops Office 365

Twice recently I have run Tuneup Maintenance and afterwards, Office 365 products failed to start.  I had to do an online repair to get them running again.  It appears that others have experienced the same problem for some time.  Have AVG acknowledged that there is a problem?  Is there a fix in the Tuneup settings that will overcome the problem? Any other suggestions before I cancel my subscription?

Hi Martin.
We regret any inconvenience caused.
It looks like you have put MS Office application to sleep using AVG TuneUp while running the PC maintenance tasks. Please wake it up manually to resolve this issue.

Open AVG TuneUp, click Speed Up tile.
Click Background application and programs.
Scroll down to bottom to see the list of programs that were put to sleep.
Check if MS Office is listed and click 'Wake' against it.

Now verify if MS Office applications are working fine. We recommend that you do not put the frequently used applications to sleep.

Thank you for your reply.

MS Office was not in the “Put to sleep” list.  If it was, as soon as I launched Office, it would have launched, as other sleeping programmes do.

There is a fault in the Tuneup application that deletes essential Office data when the Maintenance programme is run.  Please don’t insult my intelligence by asking me to go through routine checks.  I’ve done them all and it is a fault in your programme.  It has only happened recently, so it should be easy to find where the fault is.  Is that too much to ask?

All I want from AVG is to accept that fact and to do something about it.  If you refuse to do so, I will cancel my subscription.

Hello...

I have a big trouble with AVG Tune up.

Each I execute the preventive maintenance Avg Tune Up clean my notes and calendar in Office Suite.
I lost important information the last time.
How I can execute the preventie maintenance without lost my information in Office Suite?

By when will there be a solution to this problem?
If there is nothing certain, I am already determined to uninstall the application and recommend that it not be used, because instead of helping us, our information is at risk. That is useless.

When will AVG TuneUp Team finally learn from their mistakes ?!
and stop destroying MS Office 365 ?!
Today July 29th 2020 I noticed TuneUp running message: "cleaning your browsing history". I tired to open Word then Excel a while later and the same message: "Something Went Wrong. Error Code 0x426-0x0".
See the screenshot:

User-added image "
This time it took in Windows 10 only to go to control panel and Repair Office + couple of computer restarts and Office is working again.
On June 7th 2020 I had to reinstall completely the Office as nothing was working. I suspect it was then also the bloody AVG TuneUp!

That time I wasted entire day and could not use Office for at least 24h.
Guess what, it was exactly the same error Code 0x426-0x0". !
I have both identical screenshots for the record !

Today only couple of hours wasted until I realized a correlation between AVG TuneUp "cleaning browsing history" (being active) and later effect on MS Office !
My TuneUp version is 20.1 Built 1997
Your Priority should be like for Doctors: "First: Do No Harm !"
This has a real impact on our work and life.
If it happens again, I will demand complete refund, will switch to another Antivirus SW Provider, will document and post online how AVG is reckless with its Paying Customers.

Hello Marek.
We regret the inconvenience caused.
Please note that there was a bug in the latest version AVG TuneUp which is fixed now.
This was caused because keeping the MS Office application to sleep in AVG TuneUp. Do you remember putting MS Office to sleep when this issue occurred?
Martin GowdridgeMartin Gowdridge
I can categorically state that I did not put Office 365 into "Sleep Mode".  I closed down Office correctly, ran AVG Tune-Up and then could not open Office 365.  I went online to Microsoft, which ran the repair program to get Office working again.  After this happened again, I looked further into it and found that in Services, Microsoft Click-to-Run Service had been changed from Automatic to Disabled.  I changed it back to Automatic, opened Office apps succesfully then again ran Tune-Up and guess what -  Microsoft Click-to-Run Service had been changed back to Disabled!  Now AVG, try to convince me that Tune-Up was not the cause.  After the latest Tune-Up update, the problem has gone away, at least on my PC.

Martin, we're glad to hear that the issue has been resolved now.
We were not trying to convince you that this is not an AVG issue but trying to collect the facts around it.
We'd need to collect some logs from your PC to analyze the root cause of this issue.
If it happens again, please contact our technical support (https://support.avg.com/support_tech_chat?l=en) for further help.

This is an awful state of affairs, Avinash. There are lots of people that are experiencing way too many problems that AVG Tuneup has caused for users of Microsoft Office 365 .
AVG needs to be proactive is determining the problems that it causes with Office 365, not just take questions and collect data. You can collect data until doomsday, and you still won't succeed.
You should have MORE than enough data by now to duplicate the problem, and troubleshoot it.
Very, VERY discouraging.

Hi George,

Please accept our sincere apologies. This isn't the experience we wanted you to have had.
Kindly let us know what exactly happens when you try to access your Microsoft programs.
Did you put any of you Microsoft programs to sleep using your AVG TuneUp?
Have you tried restoring the changes made by AVG TuneUp & checked for the issue?
Do you receive any particular error message when you try to access your Microsoft programs?
If yes, please share us it's screenshot, so that we can check & assist you further.
You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on Answer & then click on the Image [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.
Thank you for understanding in advance!

Just to add to the message chain, I have just renewed to AVG Ultimate 2021 and the TuneUp is stopping Office 2019 from starting when put to sleep.

Clearly the bug has not been fixed in the latest version and is not just limited to O365.

I unslept the application and told it to ignore and the programs started perfectly.

Please explain why over a year since this was reported as a bug it is not fixed, plus when the developers will fix this.

Hello Angus,

We are glad to look into this and help you.
We would like to inform you that when Office 2019 is put to sleep, then it will not start launching.
Only when you wake up the Office program, it will work normal.
This is an expected behavior of AVG TuneUp program and does not need any fix.
Thank you.

I have had this problem for a long time, not only with Office 365, but even worse with my Acronis automatic backup not working. I have to go to Services and change and change a couple of services from disabled to automatic for the programs to work. The next time I rebout, the services are again set to disabled. Reading the above I suspect TuneUp to be the cause for all my trouble. The programs may have been set to sleep long ago, but not anymore. Maybe TuneUp remembers and then disables them again? What to do? i have tried all sort of things suggested on the net, including several reinstalls, changes to the registry and more. Nothing works. Have you fixed this problem?

This is STILL happening February 2022! I'm getting really fed up of having to re-enable the 'click to run' service all the time. I have tried all of the 'solutions' listed here and in other forums - nothing works. There is a definite flaw in the software.  I won't be renewing my subscription unless this is fixed soon.

I'm having the exact same issue with my copy of AVG tuneup (version 21.4 buid 3594). It keeps diasbling the office clicktorun sevice as soon as I restart my machine. Manually enabling the service is not an option anymore. Your software is very helpful but this flaw is extremely annoying. I'm not going to renew my subscription if this is still happening. Please find a solution.

Hello Sotiris,

We understand your frustration. This is definitely not the experience we wanted you to have & we're truly sorry for discomfort this has caused.
We request you to awaken all your Microsoft programs that were put to sleep using AVG TuneUp. After awakening them, please click on the "Ignore" button right next to them, to allow those applications to continue running in the background and remove them from the "Background & startup programs" list.
If the issue still persists after following the above steps, please let us know.
