AVG Massive Memory Leak BUG (Version 20.7.3140)

Hello, the latest version of AVG Free installed this morning (Sept 1, 2020) has a terrible memory leak. My computer locked up as 99% of my 32 GB of RAM was being used after AVG asked to be updated. Strangely, task manager was showing that only 24 MB were being used by AVG, and yet 99% of my 32 GB was being used. After having to manually restart my computer using a physical button on the chassis, I watched the RAM slowly climb again. This new AVG (20.7.3140) eats RAM by the second. Within about 6 minutes it was eating up 18 GB of RAM. I could not even uninstall AVG, it was saying I do not have sufficient access. Since I attempted to kill one of its processes with task manager, that is the possible reason why and I had to use AVG Clear to remove it. I have switched to Avast Free Antivirus and that is working fine with no memory leaks. I hope this info helps. Thank you!

Hi Adam,

We are sorry to hear this.

We will help you to resolve the issue.

We request you to reinstall the program and check for the CPU Usgae.

Could you share us the screenshot of the CPU usage to investigate further?

You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on "Answer" & then click on the "Image" [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

Keep us posted.
Adam JanzAdam Janz

Hi Santhosh, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, reinstalling the software is not possible at this time, since my PC is used for work and I cannot afford to have the system down. However, I can link to the original screenshots which I shared this morning. At the moment, Avast Free Antivirus is working well. so I will probably stay with it. I really do appreciate all AVG has done over the years for its users. Hopefully the bug with this update can be resolved so other users won't have their computers freeze from high RAM usage. Thank you!

This isn't the usual behavior of AVG program.
Glad to know that the issue has been resolved.
I request you to monitor and report to us if the issue occurs again.

I also have the same issue and already contacted the support team for AVG but it is still going on and i have a trouble ticket open , seems there is a bug with this latest update that is causing this .

Please fix this as i really do not want to switch to a different Antivirus software.

You're welcome Rakshith. The issue was not solved. I simply uninstalled AVG. Your company will have to test the software on your end to determine why there was a memory leak with the last update. Thank you.

I apologize for the misconception.
I appreciate your time and effort in this matter, Adam

Hi,

I was experiencing the same memory leak problem after updating to version 20.7.3140 yesterday.

After several hours of troubleshooting and trying this and that, eventually using this AVG option has helped to resolve that:

Menu / Settings / General / Troubleshooting / Reset To Default

After a reboot I was able to configure the program from scratch and there has been no reoccurrence of this memory leak problem so far.

Cheers,
Paweł

Hello Adam. Thanks for your message.

I have been experiencing the same thing for a few days now and I was going crazy searching the internet and no one seemed to have this problem.  I have 32 Gb so, memory consumption grew to the total and the machine locked but in the task manager no process that was consuming excessively appeared.  Also, there are times when the process is very fast and other times very slow.

After doing a lot of testing of safe booting, stopping services and updating drivers, I have been about to reinstall the operating system. But yesterday I remembered that a few days ago an AVG update was installed, so yesterday I uninstalled it for testing, and it stopped happening.

Pawel, thanks for your advice.  Perhaps today I will reinstall AVG and test it.

Regards,

Hi Farn,

We are sorry to hear that you are facing the same issue.

Please reset the program and check for the issue again.

Do you contact us through private post if you need further help.

Thank you.
Adam JanzAdam Janz
You're welcome, Fran. Switching to Avast Free antivirus worked for me. The software shares most of the features with AVG except for the file shredder, and Avast owns AVG so the experience should be familiar to you. :-) That said, AVG has been very reliable over the years. Hopefully the memory leak bug has been fixed so users won't run into this anymore.

This drove me crazy today. I received the updated app around Sep 19. But it was the updated virus definitions today (Sep 27) that killed my computer.

Simple fix: uninstall AVG. Then update WIndows Defender definitions. Much better now.

Hi Margrave,

This isn't the experience we want you to have. We'd like to further investigate on this.

UPDATE: After Avast began blocking a safe website (https://3dsky.org/) I use daily for work, claiming it was infected with URL:Blacklist, I decided to switch back to AVG to try it again. AVG also incorrectly gave the URL:Blacklist bug, and adding the website to the "Exceptions list" did nothing. However, yesterday, Sept. 27, 2020, AVG seemed to correct itself and allowed access to the site (I had reported the issue several times to Avast). Since it appears to be working now, I have since removed the site from the "Exceptions" list.

Regarding the original memory leak issue, I can confirm that a FRESH INSTALL of version 20.7.3140, Build 20.7.5568.599 released on September 1, 2020, does NOT have any memory leaks. I downloaded it directly from AVG's website, I did NOT update to this version. I believe the memory leak only happens AFTER updating to this latest version from an older version. A fresh install of AVG seems to be the only safe solution. However, to protect myself from future problems, I have disabled automatic updates for the Application (found under Settings > General > Update), and have set it to "Ask when an update is available".

Please let the developers know that this bug happens after updating to Build 20.7.5568.599 from an older version.

I hope this info helps.

Hi Adam,

Thank you for sharing this information.
If we are confirming that a fix released on a particular version then it should work when that version is installed on the program.
If any user reports that the fix didn't work after an update but worked only after fresh installation, then we will collect logs and analyze the root cause.

Today, May 30, 2021, AVG started a massive memory leak again. I had to uninstall the software using AVG Clear and reinstalled the latest version of AVG Free from AVG's website. This stopped the memory leak, however the fresh install of AVG was causing my main disk usage to run at 100% and causing the system to run very slow. Unfortunately, I had to use AVG Clear again to completely remove the program for everything to return to normal. Please look into this bug. I am using Windows 8.1. Thank you!

Hello Adam,

We regret the inconvenience caused.
Thank you for notifying us. This isn't the usual behavior of the AVG program.
We'd suggest you update your windows operating system, reboot your pc once and reinstall your AVG AntiVirus.
Please check for the issue status and let us know.
Thank you.
Adam JanzAdam Janz
Thank you Nisha for your reply. I installed the latest version of Avast, and it also exhibited the same bug where the disk usage stayed at 100%. I used Avast Clear to remove it, and installed Kaspersky antivirus, and there was no problem after that, so it seems the bug is with the shared software code that AVG and Avast both use. I am using Windows 8.1 if that info helps. Hopefully this issue can be fixed soon as I do like using AVG as an antivirus software, but I will keep in uninstalled for now. Thanks

Thank you for your time in notifying this to us, Adam.
If you reconsider, please reinstall AVG & then share us the screenshot of the task manager for better clarity & then submit a feedback to the concerned team by : Opening AVG - Menu - About - Found a bug.
In the meantime, we can collect few logs from your computer & escalate it to the next level support to further investigate on this.
Adam JanzAdam Janz

Thanks Dinesh. During the initial memory leak, 28 GB of my 32 GB was being used, but I did not take a screenshot during this time. However, after the fresh install of AVG, which stopped the memory leak but then causes the 100% disk usage, I did take a screenshot (shown below) as well as a screenshot after I used AVG Clear to uninstall it.

After uninstall of AVG

I'm not sure if any logs would still be existing on my system since I had uninstalled the software. But if there is, do let me know and I can share them with you via email. Thanks

Hello Adam,

Thank you for sharing the screenshot.
We request you to uninstall unnecessary applications and temporary files on your computer first.
You can run a deep scan with AVG and check for any issues.
This will improve the performance of your computer.
Please keep us updated.
Thank you.
Adam JanzAdam Janz

Thank you Sreenu. I decided to uninstall Kaspersky Security Cloud, because I did not like it injecting javascript code into every webpage I visited and I also did not like it replacing all security certificates for HTTPS websites with its own certificate. So I re-installed AVG Free today and I can confirm this version is working fine (AVG version 21.5.3185 -build 21.5.6354.561). There is no memory leak, and the high disk usage eventually did drop back down to 0% where it should be (although it took some time). So everything is working good. Thank you!

Hello,
I am also having the same memory leak issue. couple of days back I notices my laptop became very slow. Upon checking I found that AVG Antivirus is taking up too much space in memory and also consuming the cpu usage. The CPU uses was around 25% and memory taken up was around 1600 MB. I unistalled AVG and then reinstalled. For two days it worked fine but today again it's taking more than 1600 MB in memory. Please help. I am attaching screenshots.
Thanks,
Sunil
