AVG Free and Windows 10 scans not completing

Since upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, after 2 or 3 days scheduled scans hang while starting - the progress bar is at 0%, Currently scanning: Rootkit and Current object is blank - it doesn't even get to the first file. Manual scans do not always finish - the progress bar gets to 100% then it hangs. Once in this state the scans cannot be stopped except by re-starting the machine. Also, POP3 email stops working until Email Protection is disabled.

So far I have tried repairing the installation, un-installing and re-installing and, after reading posts here, run the AVG Removal Tool and re-installed. Each time it breaks again 2 or 3 days later.

Any suggestion as to how to fix this would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

Martin

Hello Martin,
We would like to thank you so much for providing the information. We request you to provide screen-shot of your AVG scanning window where it hangs. Could you please check if you are using any conflicting antivirus products(http://avgread.me/1K1IqEh)? Thank you.
Martin PallettMartin Pallett
No problem - the 100% has been that way for over 24 hours now, and the scheduled scan started after that...

After the problems started for the third time I installed the trial version of Malwarebytes Anti-malware. I can uninstall that if it will make a difference, but I understood that they could be installed together without any conflicts. Once again though, the problems were happening with AVG before I installed this.

Thank you for the information Martin.
Yes, Malwarebytes will not conflict with any antivirus program.
We request you to try repair installation of AVG program once and check whether the Scheduled Scan works perfectly.
To perform repair of AVG, please follow the instructions mentioned in this link: http://avgread.me/1BVxDSY .
Please feel free to contact us if you need any assistance.

Martin, Just for your info if the trial version of Malwarebytes you've installed includes real-time residential protection i.e. it's a trial version of the 'paid for' version it can conflict with AVG. Have a look @ this AVG article (http://avgclick.me/ConflictingApps). Malwarebytes totally 'free' version is actually OK with AVG.

Thanks Alan, I was aware of that - Malwarebytes is running as the free version with real time protection not available.

Also, these problems were happening before I installed Malwarebytes.

Martin, did you try repair of AVG once as Instructed in my previous reply?
Martin PallettMartin Pallett
Hi Balasubramanian,

I have completed the repair (albeit with the "Another installation is running..." message) and as in previous times I have repaired it, it seems to be working. I'm doing a complete scan now and the scheduled scan will be run later tonight. The real test though will be to see if it's still working after 3 days...

I will post more information when I know whether the scheduled scan has run or not.

Martin, If you see "Another installation is running..." again please bear in mind this AVG article (http://avgclick.me/InstallIsRunning).

Once again, repair fixed the problem for 3 days and now it's hung again on both a scheduled scan from 28/08/2016 and also at 60% of an update.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how this can be fixed - repair hasn't worked, uninstall and re-install hasn't worked, removal using the AVG Removal tool and a fresh install also hasn't worked.

Here are screenshots of the current situation:

Hello Martin,
We are sorry to know that the issue still persists, could you please wait for some time and see if the update gets complete. Once the update gets complete, you will be able to run the scheduled scan without any issue.
Thank you.
Martin PallettMartin Pallett
The update has been stopped at 60% for at least 4 hours now, probably much longer - I think it's highly unlikely that it will finish. The scheduled scan has been stuck at 0% now for approximately 36 hours - it isn't going to finish either. Meanwhile I have no protection...

Obviously this is a very worrying situation - if you cannot help me is it possible to escalate this issue to someone more senior who may be able to better pinpoint the problem?

Hello Martin,
If you still have the issue, then we need to escalate this case to the next level of support. Please click on this link to download and run a tool to collect the error log from your computer. The result of this tool will be analysed by the concerned team and will contact you through email. Please provide us the final zip file you receive once the logs are collected. http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/AVG_SysInfo.exe
Thank you.

Is there any update on this issue? I've been experiencing the same problems. I start a scan and it just sits forever at 0% until I force a restart.

Thanks,
R

Ronny,
We would like to inform you that the root cause of the issue is a conflict with recent Microsoft Update. As a temporary fix, repair and reinstall the AVG product. Permanent fix will be provided by Microsoft through Microsoft Updates at the earliest.
Feel free to let us know if you require any further assistance.

I also have the same issue.  I have pent countless hours repairing the prodct every time to find it hangs at Rootkits immediately on the next scan.  When a scan hangs, it also causes issues with me opening some files.
I am now trying to uninstall, but the uninstaller has hung as well.

When can we expect this issue to be resolved?
