AVG Application Data folder displays on desktop at start-up

I'm having the same problem as Georgi Angelov previously posted. I updated to AVG Free 2016 over the weekend. Now when I start my computer and the boot-up is complete the AVG Application Data folder suddenly opens up on my desktop and a single folder named "AV" is shown as the contents. I have not had this problem with previous installs of AVG Free and I don't want it now. How fo I fix it?

I have the exact same problem
My startup folder is empty. in msconfig/startup´I have avgui and avguix selected. Do I need both?
Jim BrownJim Brown
I've got EXACTLY the same problem. I'm an XP user and it started as soon as I upgraded to AVG 2016 Free about two days ago.
My startup folder is empty and Autoruns.exe don't show anything with the target C:\Documents and Settings\Jim Brown\Application Data\AVG\AV.
How do I get that directory to disappear?

I have no intention of deleting these file. I just don't want them to pop up on my desktop every time I start the computer.
How do I stop this pop up from happening.
Jerry NolanJerry Nolan
While waiting for a response from AVG (no offense guys, you did respond quickly) I used the "Autoruns" utility from Sysinternals to scan my system and see what was running automatically on start-up. After some trial and error I found a line entry named "AVG-Secure-Search-Update_1113a" (see screenshot) which was highlighted as "File not found". I unchecked the box for that line and closed Autoruns. Rebooted the computer and the AVG App Data folder no longer appeared on my desktop. Did a scan with AVG, everything worked OK. I have no idea what that line was for, AVG folks pls comment. I do hope I'm not going to have to trouble-shoot stuff like this every time AVG has an update.

Happy to help if I can. You have a pretty good support community set up. I am curious if other people with the same App Data folder problem have that same "File not found" autorun line entry.

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for your suggestion regarding "AVG-Secure-Search-Update_1113a".
I too had a similar entry called "AVG-Secure-Search-Update_0913b", but other than the slight name difference, it appeared identical to the one you had. Once I blew it out of my registry, the folder stopped appearing at startup. I know that registry element has been there for a few years, but I never worried about it before since until now it never caused me a a problem.
I get nervous every time AVG publishes their yearly update. Last year's update had a few nasty problems, the worst one for me being the fact that it prevented the O/S from disconnecting USB hard drives. They did eventually get it fixed, but it took several months.

Jim, glad you were able to resolve the problem. I've been using AVG Free for almost 13 years and have never had problems until this latest update, so I can't throw rocks at them for this one glitch. Cox Cable (my provider) offers a McAfee anti-virus package as part of my customer support but I prefer AVG because it doesn't give me a hard time with stuff I download for my flight simulator hobby.

Thanks Jerry. I've found the same reference in the registry and after deleting the problem was solved.

Jerry, I too had that problem, probably like ALL paid users. I phoned the help line and in the course of the support and them accessing my computer, I saw Autorun used for first time. They did NOT uncheck the box you did. I downloaded the autorun today after my call with AVG HELP and took same check mark out and now no more avg folder on startup. I have a theory as to why they didn't take it out, but I don't think this is a good place to mention it. Thanks for helping me, and MANY others who I will be sharing this with. A friend with AVG FREE used it already and showed the same as I saw with the paid version but he doesn't get the folder on startup.

So after all this time, still no actual answer from AVG? tisk, tisk, tisk.

Thanks Jerry & Ren for pointing the the registry fix. And for doing AVG's job.

So much for that. I just installed AVG Free today on an old Win XP machine and have this problem. Installed and ran the Autoruns utility and there is no entry for AVG except for AVG itself.

Maybe a year ago on another XP machine AVG upgraded and that time I was able to fix the issue through Autoruns and unchecking "AVG-Secure-Search-Update" as Jerry did.

So someplace in the registry is an entry looking to run an AVG file that isn't there I assume. Where??

Hal,

Thank you for sharing the screenshots. Yes, you can uncheck the specific entities that has the path "File not found". They doesn't look like AVG related files. It should be some other application which is no longer available in the computer.
Hal BissHal Biss
Thanks. Switched to the Everything view then went through and unchecked everything that had a "file not found". Seems to have solved the problem.
