I have started getting unexpected_kernel_mode_trap crashes on some Win8.1 user accounts on my PC. In each case the crash points to avgwfpa.sys as the source of the problem. Microsoft's website suggests removing AVG firewall to correct the issue. Any help?

I have recently been getting crashes on my childrens user accounts on my Win8.1 PC. The primary account seems unaffected. The microsoft website seems to indicate a problem with AVG firewall and suggests remving this as a solution. I have a paid product and expect it to work for all the user accounts on my PC. Is this a known issue and is there a fix available?

I am also experiencing the same issue. Windows 8.1 and only the child's user account and not my administrator account. Crashes as soon as first attempt to connect to Internet using browser or login via Steam application. UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP avgwfpa.sys

From the Administrator (primary) account Try repairing AVG first. Desktop mode -> Windows Key + x -> Programs and Features -> Double click AVG 2014 -> Repair AVG.

I actually performed the following steps and it seems to have fixed the issue but I don't know if just the repair: -
1. From Administrator account made the child account an Administrator (temporarily). From Desktop mode press Windows Key + X -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage Another Account -> Select child account -> Change The Account Type -> Administrator.
2. Restart Windows in Safe Mode. From Metro mode -> Drag Mouse To Corner -> Settings -> Change PC Settings -> Update and Recovery -> Advanced Startup -> Restart Now -> Choose Safe Mode with Networking.
3. From child account repair AVG. From Desktop Mode Windows Key + x -> Programs and Features -> Right Click AVG 2014 -> Change -> Repair Installation.
4. Reboot PC.
5. From Administrator account change child account back to Standard using same steps as in 1.
6. Login to child account and should no longer crash.
Stepjen JoynsonStepjen Joynson
Sorry step 2 should be: -
 2. Restart Windows in Safe Mode. From Metro mode -> Drag Mouse To Corner -> Settings -> Change PC Settings -> Update and Recovery -> Advanced Startup (Restart Now button) -> Troubleshoot -> Start Up Settings -> Choose F5 Safe Mode with Networking.

Hi, I have tried the above but stil the problem persists. My product lists itself as AVG Internet Security 2013, which I bought ona  2 year licence. I assume the recovery would be the same for this product as for the 2014 suffixed product.
Stepjen JoynsonStepjen Joynson
Hi Richard. Sorry to hear that didn't fix it for you. You are using a different AVG product to me though.
ZbynekZbynek (Avast)
Hi Richard,
If you are using AVG 2013 maybe upgrade(it is free use same license) to latest version will solve your issue.
Thanks
Alan BinchAlan Binch
Further to Zbynek's posting if you decide to upgrade also have a look @ this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-upgrade-AVG-8-5-9-0-2011-or-2012-to-the-latest-version).
Richard MartinRichard Martin
Hi,
I have upgraded to AVG Internet Security 2014 and the problem persists. I have tried the repair approach also, but why I would need to repair a new upgrade I don't know.
I am a little peeved at being targeted by salesmen whilst suffereing a failure with your product. Don't do it again please.
Any actual help with this issue would be welcome though or is Microsofts advice to uninstall the firewall the correct action?
ZbynekZbynek (Avast)
Hi Richard,
In order to analyze it please provide us with diagnostic output using this tool (http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/AVG_SysInfo.exe) and please add detailed description of issue.
Thanks

Hi Richard,
Do you use parental control? We have reported issue with enabled Parental control on Win 8.1
Thanks
Richard MartinRichard Martin
Hi,
By Parental Control I assume you mean Family Safety? Anyway, I turned that off for my childrens accounts and they appear to remain stable. Can you provide a link to the parental control issue you mention so I can keep an eye on it.? I assume that AVG are actively working on a fix for this issue?
Alan BinchAlan Binch
Richard Martib quote 'By Parental Control I assume you mean Family Safety?,,,, Can you provide a link to the parental control issue you mention so I can keep an eye on it.?,....
I believe Zbynek is actually referring to the standard Parental Control set-up within Win 8.1. I don't think there will be any link. I believe Zbynek is just referring to a user random issue report.
ZbynekZbynek (Avast)
Hi Richard,
Yes, Alan is right. I mean standart build in parental control. Issue has been transfered to our Development and they are working on it, unfortunatelly there is not public link for it.
Thanks

I also have this problem, so would like to track this to conclusion. Neither making my child an Admin, or switching off parental controls are palatable. I'd like to be aware when a fix is available.
ZbynekZbynek (Avast)
Hi Andrew,
You can uninstall AVG Firewall as temporarily fix.
I try keep you informed here.
Thanks

I also have the same issue. Windows 8.1, I was about fed up with trying to make it work, and about to ask for my money back, but I will wait. Please let me know when a fix is available.

Has anyone been able to fix this error?  I have been getting this error since the middle of June 2014.  It happens only with the accounts that have the family safety controls in place!  Help please.

ZbynekZbynek (Avast)
Hi Magda,
No unfortunately only fix (temporary) available is uninstall Firewall component or disable family safety.
Thanks
Magda VMagda V
AVG Employee, this is an disappointing response.  I have young children who have not been able to use our computer because the only usable accoun,t which has no family safety features enabled, is my account.  I don't believe that I should have to risk exposing my children to unwanted material when searching the internet because AVG has this problem.  When can expect a permanent fix?  Thank you.
Magda VMagda V
AVG Employee, if I uninstall AVG firewall, am I losing any protective features?  I am not really computer literate so I have no idea what risks I am exposing my computer to.  In other words, what are the risks to my computer if I uninstall my AVG firewall? Thank you.
ZbynekZbynek (Avast)
Yes, you do,but it is not crucial for Computer protection (windows firewall will be enabled).
Thanks

Hello, I am also experiencing the same issue (AVGWFPA.SYS unexected kernel mode trap).
So now I will disable parental control as a temporary workaround. I expect a solution from AVG as this seems to be a serious known problem (safety for our pc versus internet safety to protect our children.)
Kind regards,
Marcel

Hello, I have just purchased AVG and have the same problem with both normal user accounts monitored by Family Safety. I tried changing to administrator account and made no difference.
When will this be resolved?
Francis GreshamFrancis Gresham
I have the same issue. Glad to know what it is. It would be good to know when there is a fix. As I posted two Support tickets last week off the AVG site and received no reply how will we get to know when this issue is resolved?
Margreet BMargreet B
I have the same issue too, I can log in to my own account, but after a minute or so I get "unexpeted kernel trap mode" and avgwfpa.sys.... Can anyone tell me what to do in laymans terms please since I'm not very good with computers...
ZbynekZbynek (Avast)
Hi Margreet,
Unfortunately only fix (temporary) available is uninstall Firewall component or disable family safety.
Thanks

I have been having the same problem for some time. If AVG is not compatible with Microsoft 8.1 then i will need a refund...please advise when this will be sorted

Hi Simon,

As it was already stated in this thread - we are working with Microsoft on locating the culprit and preparing fix.

Thanks,

How do I uninstall the Firewall AVG component only? I've disabled it, but still get the BSOD.
ZbynekZbynek (Avast)
Hi Steve,
You can remove only firewall according to this kb article.
Thanks
Tech BoiTech Boi
AVG Internet Security 2015 (with AVG Firewall) + Windows 8.1 + Family Safety (ON) = All child account will crash as soon as that account gets internet acess after logging in. So far, uninstalling AVG Firewall stops the issue but a permanent fix from AVG is very essential.
[Disabling AVG Firewall doesnot fix the issue and it is not recommended as AVG won't allow Windows Deafult Firewall to run.]
*AVG Employee sugessting to remove Family Safety is so disgusting. Oh my AVG is not running smoothly on my new Win10 DP, should I be using Mac Product or Burn my new laptop and buy compactable Windows XP.
ZbynekZbynek (Avast)
Hi Tech,
You can uninstall AVG Firewall and enable Windows Firewall or install other Firewall.
Thanks
Tech BoiTech Boi
Zbynek,
Thanks for the info however I was NOT asking for answer but posting suggestions as I have already encountered problem with avgwfpa.sys and as a temporary solution I've uninstalled AVG Firewall.
Ref : UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (avgwfpa.sys)
I would like to hear from AVG on progress of finding right solutions, ie being able to run Windows Family Safety and AVG Firewall with out clash.

Hello AVG,

I'm piggybacking on this track as I have been unsuccessful going through your support email and chat for the last two months with this well known issue.

I have been an AVG advocat for well over ten years.  I have purchased your product for that same time year after year.  I have been a multi-license customer with 10 licenses for 6 years now, and I have sold your products to friends and businesses over and over again.

This issue needs resolved immediately, as it has been known for months and affects the children we need to protect,  Pointing at Microsoft is a joke, they define the standards in the market.  If you violate them, tough on you but that's for you to fix.

How unprofessional do you want to be perceived in your customer base?  I am days away from moving my loyalty to another supplier.  Immediate response to this forum is requested.

Thanks,

Wolfram

Unfortunatelly there is not update, you can remove firewall component, or I can issue you refund.
Thanks

Hi there,
Is there any update to this issue?
I have changed my child's account to a standard user and that seems to have fixed the issue for now.
But I really want to bring back my child's account from standard user to family maintenance account.
Please help!

Hi Faisal,
No unfortunately there is no update, You can remove Firewall component instead.

I  have the same problem.  The issue was reported almost a year ago but was not fixed. Very disappointed!

If I remove Firewall component, will I lose the protection function of my AVG Protction 2015?

[Jason Borean] Jason BoreanC'mon!

How am I supposed to trust AVG Products to protect, optimize, and otherwise mess with my computers settings if you can't figure out this problem that has been occuring for 2-3 years!

Make this a priority... It's not Microsoft's job to figure out why your product coding isn't working with theirs. They are in the power position... YOU should be using their SDK to make your product work with theirs... FIX IT!

I have been a customer for a REALLY long time... Your solution shouldn't be "turn off our product" or "turn off Family Safety".

PS: I also got caught in some kind of crazy loop trying to even post this... it says you need to login to post... You click on login at the top... you click on support again... And... guess what? Your are not logged in! The login on the left menu sems to work. FYI... Usabiity... Fix that too.

Don't lose a loyal client. I have brough you so many private customers... AND a HUGE amount of government... you just don't know!

I'm jumping in here about a year later- has this issue been resolved? I'm still having the same issue? any news?
Alan BinchAlan Binch
@ amy r
Amy, 'Status quo' still applies to the overall situ.. AVG would obviously update the topic if there was anything new to post.

I am amazed that this issue has gone on for so long, and that the AVG response is always, sorry, no progress.
Why isn't AVG following up with whoever has the problem in their hands, and getting a status - is it being worked on, when is a solution expected, etc.  'No progress' is not a satisfactory answer - it could mean that the problem isn't being attended to at all.
And the implications that problems won't be addressed quickly because 'it's the weekend' are seriously unprofessional.
I am very disappointed in AVG.

Richard MartinRichard Martin
I gave up on AVG finding a solution to this q long time ago. The performance by AVG in this instance is very poor at best and certainly removes any confidence anyone could have in their product being able to do anything it claims it can. My PC protection is now elsewhere and i suggest anyone still waiting for a meaningful response from AVG does the same.

Again a list:
June 22, 2014 was this question posted,
August 29, 2014 Zbynek tolt is was a problem at microsofts side
November 22, 2014 I made a list like this one and asked for progress
November 26, 2014 Answer, no progress
since than, over and over the question if there is any progres.

and jet again, more than a year later, people are giving up.
My licenses has expired in the meantime and I did not continue it. Not only because of this, but also because there is zero development shown in the program, other than every year another GUI. The old GUI doesn't even update to the new one when it comes out. I say the same as Richard Martin above this comment said. Go and search for another antivirus program to secure your pc.

I just installed AVG Ultimate and I am facing the same issue. Is there a solution for this issue on Ultimate and Window 8 combo?

Egbert de WaalEgbert de Waal
Other than removing the firewall component there isn't. I suggest returning your product and getting some other protection because AVG doesn't listen to it's customers, as you can read above. More than a year ago this issue was submitted.

Struggling with non-AVG technology? We can fix that, too!
