Can't update or run scan

I've not been able to update my free AVG 2015 since June 25.  I've tried everything on the site regarding updating, completely uninstalled last night and reinstalled, still nothing works.  My internet connection is good.  I'm still running on Windows XP - has AVG stopped supporting XP?  I've been using AVG for decade or more - love it!  Never had a problem until now.  Any suggestions to fix this problem?  thank you

Hi Grace, I will help you resolve the issue, what error message do you get while updating and are you able the scan the computer after you reinstalled the AVG Free ?
Grace SmithGrace Smith
The error message is "the connections with update server has failed in AVG."  I'm not having any failure issues with my connection.  I've even contacted by internet provider to verify all is good on their end.  Once I reinstalled, I'm still not able to update or run a scan.  Nothing works at all.  I try to run a scan and it is aborted within seconds.

Hello Grace. Thank you for replying us back. I kindly request you to update the program manually by following the instructions provided below.

1. Go to http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-update
2. Select the update files you need (typically Virus definitions and All necessary modules for your operating system) and download them to a portable media, e.g. a USB flashdisk.
3. Open your AVG program.
4. In the menu Options, click Update from directory.
5. Navigate to the folder where you stored the update files, and click OK.
Please feel free to contact us back for further assistance. Thank you.

I have followed your instructions and have updated successfully from a disc drive.  Why would it make a difference to update it via a portable device?  And, am I going to have to do this extra step every day?  I will try to run a scan to make sure that works properly.

Hi Grace, you can also use your Pen drive or other portable device to update the AVG, for that you just have to download the update files from http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-update  and then transfer them to your portable device, after you can follow the offline Update instructions and  select the update files from the portable device to update your AVG

The scan worked.  However, are you telling me that every time I want to update my AVG (which I normally do daily), I have to do this manually with the extra step of loading it to a portable drive, then transferring it to the computer?  Is there some kind of problem at AVG that this can no longer be done automatically?  From the number of people asking this same question on this site, I think it's safe to assume that the problem is on AVG's end.  Is this something that will be fixed eventually or is this the new operating procedure - manual downloads?

Grace, Presently there's an issue with virus definitions auto updating which is being investigated by AVG. For the time being please continue manually updating.

Grace, you asked earlier today…

“I have to do this manually with the extra step of loading it to a portable drive, then transferring it to the computer?”
The short answer is NO…

Here’s a link to a really long thread discussing your problem. There’s a lot of stuff here you don’t need. May I suggest you look at my post of July 7th, describing the manual updating process. Specifically… no’s 3 and 4 will answer your “portable drive” question. A question I also had.

Now may I suggest you jump to the last two or three posts in this thread for an update on current conditions.

Bottom line…AVG (auto-updates) has been broken for – going on – three weeks.

Proper protection requires daily – or at least – weekly MANUAL updates as you have already done...

We wait and we hope for a resolution to this on-going issue…..

P.S. If you are feeling particularly FRISKY…read the whole thread…IT”S A HOOT…

I KNOW… I’m just CAPS HAPPY…SORRY…

Thank you Greg H!  So glad to know that I'm in the same boat of confusion with some very adept IT guys.  I also had my computer off for a few days in the third week of June and am running XP.  After reading your thread with so many others chiming in, that seems more than a coincidence.  Also, like many others, I was reading threads and trying to fix myself from the info sent to others via avg techs.  That's how I happened on the manual update.

I've used AVG on various computers for more than a decade. LOVE it!  Never had issues before.  LOVE the fact that they have a free version - and it's very good for free!  I recommend it to everyone I know - especially young college kids I work with who can't afford the expensive programs (that I don't feel work well anyway!).  I am also amazed that they haven't "owned" this issue and posted a notice on their website.  Nothing - crickets in the night.  Hoping it can be resolved soon for all of us.

I hate to be a cynic or paranoid, but if I were going to launch a major viral attack, I'd disable the anti-viral programs first.   Anyone know if McAffee or Norton are having issues too?
