I recently renewed my Internet security Suite. On the first and subsequent updates, even though the update is shown as successful, I keep getting the following message in red letters "You are not fully protected ! UpdateManager: general error" I'd appreciate any ideas on how I can correct this issue.
A very Good Evening to you Robert! I have done some digging and this error is normally caused by either .net framework or Windows Installer Problems so lets cover all of the bases so we can get you back to normal.
Fixing Windows Installer Note that this method requires using the registry editor in Windows. Modifying the registry can cause problems to Windows. I Recommend you Backup the registry before making any changes.
Click Start > Run and then type regedit.exe. Hit the OK button to open the registry editor.
In registry editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SoftwareMicrosoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
In the right pane, delete all registry string data except the default string. The image below displays what you should see after deleting the registry strings for the DisabledSessions key. Note: Do not delete anything at the left pane and do not delete the DisabledSessions key.
Fixing .Net Framework
Some software programs use Microsoft .NET Framework and if there are corrupted files, you need to repair the .NET Framework:
Determine the installed .NET Framework on your computer by running the verification tool.
Use the .NET Framework Cleanup tool to uninstall the installed versions of .NET Framework that the verification tool has detected. Note that Windows 7 and Vista is part of the system which means you cannot remove it. Simply proceed to removing the .NET Framework components that the tool can remove.
Reboot the computer when done using the tool.
Download .Net Framework 1.1, 1.1 SP1, 3.5 SP1 and 4.0 from the following links:
Install .NET Framework 1.1, 1.1 SP1, 3.5 SP1 and 4.0 in order.
Reboot the computer whenever you are prompted by the installer.
Visit Windows Update website (for XP) or open the Windows Update application (for Vista and Windows 7) to download important updates for Windows. It is important to install the security updates and .NET Framework updates to take advantage of program and security fixes for your computer.
Restart the computer and continue checking and installing updates for Windows until Windows Update detects that there are no more important or critical available updates for your computer.
Close any running application and make sure that there is no other antivirus program installed in Windows. Note, that some programs are not compatible with AVG such as ZoneAlarm Toolbar, K9 Web Protection, and PC Maclan. Remove any of these programs before installing AVG. Also, if you are using Better File Rename software, make sure that you are using the latest version because the old version of this particular software conflicts with AVG.
Try reinstalling AVG for Windows.
I Know it is a bit long winded but that should sort out your problems, if you get stuck or need a bit of extra help feel free to reply.
Hi There Robert, This is definately unusual behaviour for AVG, i would like to link you to an AVG Knowledge Base article walking you through Repairing AVG Step by Step (you can click the link below)
Please try this first and should this not solve the problem please feel free to reply to my post and i will investigate this matter further.
I tried the link you recommended "Repairing AVG Installation" and got the same problem with the following message: Error code: 0xC0070643 Error message: General internal error Additional message: MSI engine: Failed to instal the product Context: AVG product instalation, MSI action failed Although this time there was no warning message in red letters, the instalation failed to complete. I then noticed that my installed AVG was 2013, so I decided to uninstal that and download the latest 2015 files which I still have on my PC. The problem is I got the same message about filure to instal and so was left with no Antivirus or Firewall. As a temporary measure I've installed Microsoft Security Essentials but I really want the AVG Suite I paid for. Hope you can help me.
Depending on whether you are Using 32-bit or 64-bit please download the Relevant AVG Remover, once dowloaded please run the file as an administrator you can do this by right clicking the file and selecting run as administrator.
Follow the instructions on screen and once it asks you to restart please restart your computer then try re-installing.
Once again thanks for the prompt reply. I followed your instructions to the letter and got the same result with the same message: Error code: 0xC0070643 etc... I don't know what happened because I've been running AVG Suite for 3 or 4 years now and never had any installation problems. What do I do now?

Robert, Before you tried to install AVG have you made sure that you've totally uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials?.. Have a look @ this article (http://avgclick.me/prepareforAVGinstall). AVG Guru
Robert, Before you uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials you could actually download & then eventually use either the 32 or 64 bit off-line install file whichever suits your system. AVG Guru
Thanks for the guidance on NET frameworks. It seems pretty easy to follow. I'm going to print out your instructions then tomorrow when I have more time i'll I'll try it out. I'll keep you posted on how things go.
It seems you were on the right track. During the process you suggested I discovered that there are a number of incompatability issues with NET so I decided that the best thing to do is reinstall Windows. I'll do that this weekend then install AVG again. I'll let you know how it goes.
Hi Robert, Thats brilliant news that we finally got to the bottom of it!!!
