AVG won't update

I'm having the same issue. I've already deleted the temporary update files as outlined in that article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en_US&urlname=Message-Invalid-update-control-CTF-file-or-A-bin-file-is-missing-when-updating-AVG. more than once. It still comes up with the same error. We are a small IT consulting company and happen to have 3 different machines from different home customers that had/have the free version of AVG installed. They are ALL having this problem. Each of them have different reasons for having to reinstall (updating to new version, infections, etc...). None were having this issue before uninstalling originally. When deleting the files didn't work, we tried uninstalling/reinstalling/reparing, downloading the installation files again, etc... none of it helped. AVG installs with no issue, it just can't update. Can we download a full copy of the updates somewhere and try to install by hand?

Please let me know if there's any more information I can give to help solve this. I really would like to return these systems back to the customer with the same antivirus since they all seem to be happy with it.

Thank for your time,

Andy

Hello Andy. I understand how something like this can really try your patience. Please follow the below steps to update your AVG:
1. Go to www.avg.com/update.
2. Select the update files you need (typically Virus definitions and All necessary modules for your operating system) and download them to a portable media, e.g. a USB flashdisk.
3. Open your AVG program.
4. In the menu Options, click Update from directory.
5. Navigate to the folder where you stored the update files, and click OK.
Please feel free to contact us back for any further assistance. Thank you.

Edit: In my haste, I didn't include some informaiton. I apologize. The error I'm getting is that "a .bin file is missing" on all the machines.

Andy, Within the Aravind Gnanamurthy posting for AVG Free.. Use the update files from this webpage (http://free.avg.com/ww-en/download-update).

Ok, I did that. The updates seemed to install OK. For the sake of curiousity, once it was done updating and said "up to date" , I clicked on the "Update" button again to see if it would come back and say there were no updates available. Nope. It still tries to download some kind of small (less than a MB in size) file, then came back and displayed the SAME error. A .bin file is missing.

So, to further troubleshoot (or confuse myself), I went home and grabbed my home laptop which also has the free version of AVG 2015 in it. Everything was green like it was all up to date. I clicked on the "Update" button anyway to see what would happen. Again, "a .bin file was missing". That was my home machine. Fairly recent fresh load of Windows. Not infected. Never has been. It "appears" to be up to date with no issues, but it cannot download updates either. In the two years I've had AVG on that one, I've never had an issue with it till today.

I'm starting to suspect an issue with a file (or files) currently in the queue on the AVG update server. Or perhaps an issue with the very last update that succeeded??

Hope this information helps.

So, your suggestion worked for THIS round of updates, but why doesn't it work whenever the AVG application tries to update itself? Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Andy

I want to be confident that if I leave AVG free on these customer machines that I'm not going to be getting phone calls from them when the next round of updates come out tomorrow or the next day.

Thanks,
Andy

Update: I've connected with online support so they could connect remotely. From what I could find out, apparently this is an ongoing problem and they are aware of the issue. He collected system information to help "escalate" the issue to "senior level techs". Hopefully they'll figure it out soon because I have probably 40 or 50 customers with AVG installed so I'm probably gonna start getting phonecalls...

Thank you for your time with this.
