scanning avg free antivirus

I cannot figure out how to do a quick scan? I can only do a whole computer scan. is there a way to do a quick scan, other than scanning certain areas?

Hello James,
In AVG we do have only the Whole System Scan, however, you can increase the speed of the scan by changing the scan option from scroll bar at the bottom of the scan page. You can see an option as "Dynamic". Please change the scan speed to "Fast" and that should run the scan quickly.
Thank you.

This is a late reply... Sorry James. However, I think I could help you.

Since AVG Free Antivirus 2017 removed the option to run a quick scan, many have complained about the lack of a fast way to scan their system. However, I noticed AVG Free 2017's settings interface has become very similar to its parent company: Avast. Long story short, using the Scan Settings of the "Quick Scan" from Avast, YOU CAN CREATE A QUICK SCAN in AVG Free. Here's how (Note: I hope AVG doesn't take offense in this. I just want to help fellow users):

1. Open AVG Antivirus Free from either Windows taskbar or AVG Zen.
2. Click the gear icon beside the "Scan Computer" option. On the bottom, click "SCHEDULE SCAN".
3. The Scan Parameters Dialog Box will open. Name and comment the scan as you wish, but I'd advise you TO NOT NAME THE SCAN "QUICK SCAN" (I'll explain later why^). Scroll down to "Scan Areas". Select/Add the options: a. System Drive, b. Rootkits (quick scan), c. Auto-start programs. Under "Recognize file types by their", choose the option "name extension". DO NOT CHECK "SCAN ALL
FILES".
4. On the left portion of the dialog box, select the option "Sensitivity". Under "Heuristics", set Heurestic
sensitivity to 2 BARS only (Low). UNCHECK "Use code emulation". Scroll down, then check the option "Follow links". For added protection, check the option "Scan for Potentially Unwanted Applications".
5. This step is optional. If you want your custom quick scan to be faster, click on "Performance" in the left portion of the dialog box. Set the scan priority to "High". This will speed up the scanning in exchange for more system resources. DO NOT DISTURB THE OTHER SETTINGS (i.e. leave the setting for Persistent cache and file access as it is).
6. This step is optional. If you want AVG to take care of the scan for you, head to "Actions" in the left
portion of the dialog box. Check "Automatically apply actions". A window with the tabs "Virus, PUP, and
Suspicious will appear. On all three tabs, select the action "Fix automatically". Don't bother with the
setting "if action fails".
7. This step is optional. You can schedule your scan daily, weekly, or monthly in the "Scheduling" option in the left portion of the dialog box.

Enjoy your custom AVG Quick Scan!! :)

^Explanation why you should not name the custom scan "quick scan": I once had two laptops with AVG Antivirus Free connected by AVG Zen. I "commanded" the AVG Zen from one PC to initiate a scan on the other laptop. Seconds later, the second laptop began scanning, and to my surprise, when I checked the scan on the second laptop, the scan was named "Quick Scan". I'm getting the feeling the Quick Scan functionality is still built in AVG Antivirus, but is probably hidden within the "Full Computer Scan" option. My point is, I don't want to give the program confusion by creating a scan with the same "name" as a built-in scan in AVG Antivirus. In the end, it's just my hunch. Besides, I'm sure you guys can come up with better names for your custom quick scan. :)
