Windows Defender and AVG

I wrote about this a few days ago but cannot find the thread. AVG did not deactivate windows defender after a windows update (windows 10). I turned off real time protection for Defender but it automatically reactivated!!
How do I permanently deactivate windows defender and why didn't AVG Internet security deactivate it like it is supposed to?

Hello Joel,
We are sorry to know that. Please be informed that installing AVG will generally disable the Windows defender and take control of the computer security and firewall. If it has not taken control, then there can be a problem with the installation. Please check if AVG is working fine in your computer. And also please send us the screenshot of the Windows Defender active after AVG installed.
Thank you.

Here are the active and inactive defender windows.User-added imageUser-added image

AVG is active in my notification are. Also when double clicking on the AVG icon in the notification area, it opens zen rather than the Internet security window. When I open the internet security window ity states that I am protected.

Hello Joel,
Please follow the instructions provided below to disable the Defender program.
Open up Windows Defender, go to Tools on the top menu, and then click on Options.
Now click on Administrator on the left-hand pane, uncheck the box for “Use this program”, and click the Save button.
You will then be told that the program is turned off.
Please feel free to contact us for further assistance.
Thank you.

Hello Joel,
In that case please try to follow the instructions provided below and check whether you could disable the Windows Defender program.
Go to Run.
Type in 'gpedit.msc' (without quotes) and hit Enter. ...
Head to the 'Administrative Templates' tab, located under 'Computer Configuration'.
Click 'Windows Components', followed by 'Windows Defender'.
Find the 'Turn off Windows Defender' option, and double-click it.
Apply your changes before exiting the GPE menu.
Thank you.

Hi
I have windows 10 home and so there is no group policy editor. I have disabled defender in the registry and removed it from startup. That seemed to work. I am not happy that AVG did not disable it and why does zen open as the default when double clicking the avg icon in the notification area? It never did that before.
