AVG AntiVirus Free edition virus definition updates not working

Hi, I've been running AVG AntiVirus Free on an old Windows XP computer. A couple of weeks ago I was prompted to update, the version now running is Version number 16.121.7859

Since this update all scheduled attempts to update the virus definitions have failed, the error displayed is Code 0xe0018d0d

When I try to update manually the application appears to be trying to update definitions and I see no obvious error messages but it seems to stall with an upgrade progress of 15%

Is there any easy fix for this or do I need to reinstall AVG AntiVirus ?

Also, where possible I prefer to do offline installs, I can see the offline installer for this version but can only see the virus definition updates for offline installs on a page that says these updates are for paid versions only. Is there a seperate page for AVG AntiVirus Free offline updates ?

Thanks
Andy

Thank you for the information, Andy.

We feel sorry to inform you that we do not have offline installation/ virus definitions for AVG Free version.

Please open your AVG Zen-> AVG Free -> Reports tab which is at the top right corner and make a screenshot. Kindly attach the screenshot http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot of this so that we will check and help you further.

Our latest build version is 16.131.7924, we recommend you to reinstall your AVG http://avgclick.me/howtoreinstallAVG
to fix the issue. Please, feel free to let us know if you require any further assistance. Thank you.

I've attached a few screen shots to show more details of the problem

AVG AntiVirus Free was working fine on this Windows XP SP3 desktop PC until the recent update on 15/11/2016, I was prompted for a restart after that update, I did this and all seemed fine for a while until virus definitions attempted to update a week or so later

AntiVirus is still working ok, my only problem appears to be that virus definition updates no longer work

This is the version of software currently installed

If I need to reinstall AVG AntiVirus Free I'd prefer to do this after some preparation (take soem extra backups etc) and as an offline install. Is there an offline install available for the latest free version ?

Could you confirm that I need to uninstall the current version first or the installer would perform a repair/install of the existing software.

Thanks again for your help

Kind Regards
Andy

PS Is the unavailability of an offline virus definition install a temporary situation for this latest version of AVG AntiVirus Free. I've previously used offline installers for both the application and virus definitions for my kids Windows 7 & Windows 8 laptops and also previous rebuilds of XP desktops and found it very useful.

Thanks Kishore

I can confirm that no other antivirus software has been installed on this PC (yet !), and nothing else has been installed in recent months either.

As AVG AntiVirus Free is still working on the PC, but not currently updating, I'm not going to uninstall it for a while until I can get a clearer picture of the direction that AVG are taking with the free version of this product.

Could you answer the following questions for me to help clarify this situation

1 Is a 32-bit offline installer for basic AVG AntiVirus Free currently available ?

2 Are offline updates available for AVG AntiVirus Free ?

3 If offline installs and/or updates are not currently available for the free version will they be available again in the near future ?

4 Will a page for a basic free Antivirus be added back to your web site? Ideally this should also include a note about options to include/exclude AVG ZEN during an install.
 .

Whenever I've installed AVG AntiVirus Free in the past on a new PC, or after a rebuild or uninstall/re-install I've done so while disconnected from the internet. This is still a key requirement for me. The last time I did this was back in March on my Son's Windows 7 laptop and I still have a folder with the 32-bit AVG Free 2016 software and updates that I used then and could use again now for a while if I necessary while I review my longer term anti virus options.

I have been using AVG AntiVirus free for over 10 years on all my families' PC's and have frequently recommended it to friends and colleagues who, like me, only want to use basic reliable no frills anti virus software. As a long term user of a free product I have been pleased that I've had such a long run with reliable and trouble free software. In the past I think I've only needed to uninstall & reinstall a couple of times across various desktop and laptop PCs and have never called upon support so was surprised at the prompt responses that I've received for my 1st AVG support case. .

Looking at some other cases raised by users of the free version I see that I'm not alone with my concerns with the recent changes and the ZEN update, and what appears to be a strategic direction from AVG to push users more firmly towards paid products. The tone of some posts is a bit harsh when seeking support for a free product but I can understand the frustration when the product and website have been changed so much to either deliberately or inadvertently make it less appealing for users of the free product. Over the years I'm sure that having a large user base of free users has helped identify problems and improvements for the product that have benefited both AVG and it's paid users.

I'd like to think that some of the recent impacts to free users have not been intentional and that web links etc will be added back to make self support easy again. If that's not the case then I'll look elsewhere for basic antivirus software and thank you again for 10+ years of supplying a good product free to your community of users.

Thanks

Andy,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns. We have sent you an email instruction to collect the log files required for escalation to analyze the exact cause for that update issue. Please follow those instructions to get in touch with them and you should be able to resolve your issue.

We are sorry, unfortunately, there is no offline installer or  offline virus definitions file to our AVG Free Antivirus program. It may get added in the future update, but we are not sure about that. We feel sorry to inform you that AVG Zen is mandatory and it is not possible to install your AVG free version without Zen.

Sorry about the re-post above

I'll work through my current AVG update issue and then come back to your site in the new year to see if there are any changes with the availability of the free product.

I can live with AVG ZEN, unless it starts to display unwanted behaviour, but as mentioned earlier I view the availability of offline installs and updates as essential for the 1st anti virus install, or a re-install on a PC.

Thanks again for your help

Hi, Here's an update for this problem

Today I uninstalled AVG & AVG ZEN, did a cleanup and attempted to install AVG Free again from this full installation file while offline => AVG_Antivirus_Free_x86_694.exe
The install failed with Error code: 0xE001D012
I saved the install log cab file for this attempt

I then ran the same installer again after connecting to the internet, this time it failed with a new error
Error code: 0xC0070643

Next I downloaded the latest AVG free file from here
http://www.avg.com/au-en/thank-you-protection-free?build=1606
and ran AVG_Protection_Free_1606.exe
This installation ended ok, virus definitions were updated and I have run a scan successfully.

I have a question though, I don't see a reference to "free" anywhere through the screens and AVG ZEN has an "EXPIRES in 29 days" message. Is this expiration for the AntiVirus program or just for any other programs that are available for trial just after a new install ?

I'm confused here because after running AVG_Protection_Free_1606.exe and selecting the custom install I saw no options to select between a free or trial version of the software - unlike previous versions where you have a choice between basic support and the full paid product. I have screen captures of every step of the installation process.

I've seen comments and instructions about downgrading trial versions to free versions. In a frequently linked to document there is a note saying that after the trial period the product automatically reverts to the free version.

My questions then are these:

1 - Is the current free version of AVG on the download page now really just a link to a trial version of an online installed version ?

2 - After the trial period does AVG automatically revert to the free version or do I then need to go through another uninstall / install phase to convert it to the free version ?

3 - To perform a full oflfine install of AVG free could I download the full installer for the trial version and then wait for this to lapse to the free version, or downgrade it ?

Installing and using AVG free used to be a simple process, it seems to have become confusing and time consuming now for no apparent benefit to anyone.

I've recently been looking at the Avast free offering, there's a full offline installer readily available and offline virus definition updates, and the product seems to provide the basic functionality and small foot print that is all that the majority of AVG Free users would need.

Regards

Andy, Just in case you weren't aware Avast & AVG have now amalgamated (https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b0000000LSo8AAG).

Thanks Alan

I saw an article about the plans for this a while back, I wasn't aware that it had gone ahead though.

Hopefully between the 2 sides of the organisation someone will decide that it's worth maintaining a basic anti virus product for those of us who don't want or need anything else.

Hi

Is anyone able to answer the following questions that I asked recently after uninstalling AVG free and then installing the latest version (AVG_Protection_Free_1606.exe) from the main download page

Thanks
Andy
