Failed to update/install: General Error

Out of nowhere December 6th AVG declared that I was at risk due to AVG needing an update, so I tried to update yet I keep getting an error of "Update failed: General Error". After trying a ton of suggestions found online, I tried uninstalling, using AVG removal tool and then reinstalling.

I get to the point of installation where it asks for my email info to create an account/sign in, and then it pops up with another error saying that it's "Failed to install: General error" again. I've tried every suggestion I can find online and I see in the process of researching that lots of other people are having this problem right now.

I uninstalled AVG as per your instructions, now I can't reinstall it at all and am left with no protection... I've spent 5 hours trying to resolve this and I'm at my wit's end... Please help! :/

I see people are always asked for their error log file too, I don't see an option to attach a file here. Let me know if it's needed.

Yeah just like Rol Iam, I've been using AVG FREE for years and years, never a single problem until now. Clearly it's an AVG coding issue or windows tweaked something in an update that is interfering.

I replied to the email, however I'll reply here just in case also. I tried running the AVG SysInfo tool provided, after clicking on "Continue" it says "Running" for a couple seconds and then pops up with an error saying "The program can't start because VCRUNTIME140.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." and then I press "Ok" and another error of "zstatetoolx.exe has stopped working" pops up.

Currently no copy of AVG is installed, not sure if that matters. But as noted originally I cannot reinstall AVG at all now.

Struggling with non-AVG technology? We can fix that, too!
