UI failed to load - AVG Free

Hi foks - I have been using AVG Free on my old XP-SP3 for some time without any problems, but after updating application today I'm not able to launch the AntiVirus-interface. I did make a complete un-install and clean-up in registry before a new install (v. 1606). Still same problem: "UI failed to load" on a dark-grey background in the window, where AntiVirus-interface was expoected - no navigation-keys vissible - only <Alt><F4> works to knock-down the grey window. Starting a scan from the AVG 'control-center' seems to work OK - but does the virus-protection actually work ?

I am anxiously watching this thread as I have the same exact problem,  Based on what I've read so far, it seems like I should wait to perform the steps noted above.  Please post all pertinent findings back here.  I will be checking this thread regularly.  Thanks!

I am also anxiously watching this thread as I have the same exact problem ... same version of XP.  I have followed all the recommendations at least twice and still get the UI Failed to Load window.  So, as of now I have AVG completely uninstalled and waiting to see what the next recommended steps are to correct or being advised that a revised software version is available that corrects this problem.  Thank you.

Epic fail on AVG's part.  Seems like they have abandoned us.  It's been a week with no further effort on their part.

We will get back to you after analyzing the logfiles.

Thanks for your belated attention to the matter.  Seems like you'll help many people by getting to the bottom of this issue.  I have run the diagnostics and sent the log using the diagnostic utility,  I also saved a copy.  The process appeared to complete, but during the collection of the data the following errors were generated...

11:05:31 AM: Could not set current working directory (error 2: the system cannot find the file specified.)
11:05:31 AM: Could not set current working directory (error 2: the system cannot find the file specified.)

11:05:36 AM: Could not set current working directory (error 2: the system cannot find the file specified.)

I was advised to expect a confirmation via e-mail and an incident number, but these were not received. I anxiously await your earliest advice.

It looks like I'm not the only one having the exact same issue. My particular issue, started about a week ago.

Also, I noticed that Avast is having the same issue, too. I tried that one, last night, hoping for the best. It's a shame, I suspect that I have a virus that AVG wasn't able to catch at all. But, I also do need to upgrade my computer and OS. I'm still using XP, just like the original poster. I love XP a lot, though. It turned out to be Microsoft's best OS, in my opinion.

I am having the same problem on Windows 10. It started recently, I think a few days ago.

The behaviour of this company is truly farcical. I uninstalled AVG internet Security from an elderly XP machine but the new software from another company didn't show up. I therefore decided to go for  a quick solution and install AVG Antivirus Free. Quick? You must be joking. 'Ui Failed to load' message still after three uninstalls, two using Revo and one using AVG remover tool.
I wrote, in another question, of the arrogance of this company and that is now being joined by incompetence. The software has been changed by people lacking the technical ability to carry it out satisfactorily. On top of that the program has been forced upon us before it is ready for use. I would like to have returned to me the program that I bought - not this crapware.
Come on you pseudo-technologists and get your collective fingers out.
My Windows 7 computer with the latest AVG Internet Security says last sc\n was 2 days ago, it was 1 day; last virus definition update 12 hours ago, it was 3 hours. Doesn't fill you with confidence, does it, that this software is giving any protection. Michael Gallant mentions that Avast is having the same UI fail as AVG. It is as I suspected the Avast group who have messed up. I would never have bought their products in the past.
There's no way any longer of removing their showoff logo from email certification and I could go on but I'm tired - you'll no doubt be pleased to hear.

I have to give AVG their due.  Even though I have the free version and XP, which everyone else has stopped supporting, I allowed AVG remote access and they fixed the problem.  For the most part it seemed to be just a reinstallation of sorts as described above, and I couldn't tell you what the tech did differently, but darn if it didn't work!  At least until the next time I reboot!  ;-)

OK Art, No probs.. Pleased to see that you appear to be now sorted. Thanks for returning to the Community & posting.

I STAND CORRECTED!  It didn't even last until the next boot!  AVG totally hung up my machine.  I may have lost important e-mail messages.  It even generated a Windows System Error this time.  You would think by now that they'd be aware that the problem can't be fixed simply by uninstalling and reinstalling the application and they'd be working on a patch to fix the real problem.  All they would have to do is read the comments here to know by now that it was necessary..  I wasted a couple hours this afternoon watching an online tech do just that to no avail.  He should have known better.

I grew tired of trying to help AVG to rout out the problems with their software.  It was almost the final impetus to giving up XP to which I still cling dearly.  When the online technician was preparing to uninstall my Zonealarm firewall (which never before conflicted with AVG), I realized that Zonealarm has its own free virus scanner.  I asked the online technician to simply remove every vestige of their software from my computer and a few clicks later I was smoothly running Zonealarm's free virus scanner.  I recommend it highly for any other hapless XP users still using AVG!

This happened to me on two computers where I installed the new version of AVG over a previous version.

I just uninstalled all AVG components using the starndard Windows Uninstall, then redownloaded and installed AVG.

That solved the issue.

I did nothing with safe mode, or special AVG utilities to "clean" AVG from the computer.

On computers where I installeed AVG "fresh" -- meaning no previous version existed --- I didn't run into this error at all.

I'm just checking back in here, to see if there has been any improvement.

In the meantime, I downloaded another virus scan, BitDefender. It's ok, I suppose. But, I honestly preferred AVG over this one (when AVG was properly working).

I'll continue to check in on this thread, to see if there is a fix, for this issue.

Sorry, but alla circumvention proposed for AVG problem UI FAILED TO WORK, don't work!

I solved, in my XP sp3 pro, uninstalling the last version with Windows Add/Remove Prograns, then for more care manually deleting all AVG* found in C: volume, then reboting and finally installimg one of PREVIOUS free version found on WEB, exactly the 2016.131.7924, from the site:
https://avg-free.it.uptodown.com/windows/download
Note: the downloaded file, 320 MB, doesn't require Internet Connection during installation, suggested execution off line. This version work nice on my PC, and i judge thet as sconsider the your better/faster edition.

I just encountered this issue myself and i fixed it by clicking to unistall my AVG via using the uninstall software located in the control panel. After i clicked to unistall AVG a AVG window opened and asked if i wanted to repair the program or unistall. I clicked repair, it loaded for a bit and when it was finished I opened my AVG and it works now.

I have 2 XP machines (SP3) and I have "Ui failed to load" problem also on both machines.  Read the posts and decided to try the "Control Panel - Add Remove Programs - AVG Protection - Remove - Fix" route as this seemed the simplest with some success.  It was totally usless. I still have the same UI failed to load grey screen.

I do not intend to do anything until AVG people post on this thread with a credible solution  That is one that actuall works.   We are not amused

Similar problem here. XP SP3. AVG Free ver 17.4.3014 Last updated Jan18 1970 (Yep, that's what it reports!) The Problem started in the last day or so.
Symptom: Browsers blocked: websites don't load...waiting....waiting...!
AVG symbol in system tray shows a fault symbol - "click for more info" or some such. Clicking brings up the grey  "This is embarrassing" screen.
Email (Outlook Express) continues to work. Seems to happen when the PC has been sitting unused for a while.
I can restore normal operation by clicking the Restart UI button or restarting the "AVG Antivirus" process via Component Services. It is supposed to be an auto-start service apparently? Why is it stopping and not restarting?
Having read others'  experiences I don't intend to Uninstall and re-install AVG until a solid fix is published.
Do you need any other info? This is proving quite annoying.

AVG wake up!  Since your recent update, you're getting all these posts about "UI Failed". Your update is bugged.  I have uninstalled / reinstalled several times and the the same error message appears. Internet connection fails. I hit "restart" and AVG goes back to working.  15-60 minutes later the error message comes.  FIX IT!

Would you like to provide us with the log files of AVG?

I expect that you will learn about the problem with your update from the many log files you have or already have received.  Until you come up with a fix, I'm uninstalling AVG and installing Zone Alarms.  I prefer AVG ( and have for a long tim).  There is no question when the program automatically updated teh program, there was an error message of some wort about the installation.  I hope you will contact your customers once you fix the bug that is causing these UI Error messages and the required restart of the UI.  Thanks.

Exactly the same issue here.  UI Error started appearing today.  Now I can't access AVG.
Ben JohnsonBen Johnson
I have also noticed, like other users, that some of the AVG services are still running (despite the fact I cannot access the AVG consnole due to the 'UI Error').  As an example, an AVG notification just appeared, informing me that a particular IP address has now been blocked.  I don't want it blocked: it's causing issues.

A buggy update has been released by AVG?

Please release an update to correct the error.

I am running Windows 10 and I started receiving this "UI failed to load" message today. I'm happy to report I was able to follow the post above about running the repair option to once again gain access to my GUI so that I could start a scan. Basically, the steps were: Start -> Control Panel -> Uninstall a Program -> AVG Protection -> Change (in the top/tiltle bar) -> Repair (in the AVG installer GUI)

Has anyone else noticed that Windows Updates now appear not to download?  I think AVG may have blocked traffic on that connection.

I am an AVAST user and I had the problem. Searching the internet for a solution, I noticed the following:
1°   Both AVG users  AND AVAST users complain for exactly the same problem with the same error screen.  What do they have in common ?
2°   Repair, deletion and reinstallation procedures  of the antivirus don’t  fix the problem
My opinion is that it is more related to Windows than on AVG/AVAST .
To verify this assumption, I have restored Windows 8 from an earlier restore point (in my case one month before the problem appeared), then updated Windows to the current position.  Finally I uninstalled AVAST and then reinstalled it. And it is working fine now…
If someone could do the same for AVG, we should be fixed...

Same problem here, since a week or so.

AVG UI stops responding, but most importantly AVG stops ALL net connections. This causes disconnection from games, failed download etc...
Have to restart the UI, which does not always work.
You pretend you still support winXP SP3 (i'm running this), is this really the case?
Why do we have to clean repair reinstall whatever ? Obviously this has been caused by an avg update.
If you no longer want to support the free version, just say so....

Hi,
If you are running windows 10, then you can try this.
It worked for me as I was also facing this prblem since 3days.
Here you go,

Just go to SETTINGS(from start menu).
There you'll find SYSTEM, click on it.
At left side bar you'll find APPS & FEATURES, click it (List of APPS installed on your system will appear)
Find AVG Protection in the list, click it (two options appears( MODIFY & UNINSTALL )).
Click UNINSTALL (It'll ask you to uninstall. click YES.)
After clicking YES, an AVG window will open asking you to REPAIR or UNINSTALL.
Just click REPAIR (It'll start repairing).
Wait untilll it repairs. And AVG UI will appear on your screen as soon as the repair completes.

Other OS users can also try it.

Thank You ALL....

Uninstall AV however you can. If the uninstaller doesnt work then start the PC in safe mode and delete everything from the AVG directories in C:\program files and disable the AVG services. Don't bother with the cleanup programs - they are useless!

Re-install AVG using an old installer - I used "AVG_Antivirus_Free_1435.exe" from 2016 but others may work. You should be able to do a search and find these on the web somewhere, but if all else fails I can send you a copy. Your AVG UI should now work fine.

Now why couldn't AVG come up with this solution??
Cheers...
KarthikeyanKarthikeyan (Foundever)
Hello Peter,

I appreciate your efforts in providing this solutions. This may work only for some time because when you install a older version of AVG Antivirus this program will get automatically updated to the latest version. During this update, you might get some error. So, it is always recommended to install the AVG protection from the latest link which will install the latest version and we have also updated our links http://www.avg.com/us-en/download, this should install the latest version of AVG programs without any error.

Thank you
Peter LPeter L
Thats fine, but if you guys have really fixed the buggy update then it won't re-occur. If you haven't then the link you gave me still won't work will it?

By the way, just for everyone else's info - removing AVG and installing Avast results in exactly the same error, so both of these programs seem to be using the same buggy bit of code - check the Avast forum if you don't believe me.

Cheers, Peter

Hello Peter,

This issue has already been reported to the developer team and should get resolved very soon. You can install the latest version of AVG Antivirus Free from that link and check if you face any difficulties. If you have any problem, you can always contact us.

Peter, Also this issue may well be happening together with this move (https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b0000000LSo8AAG). Some Avast features are now being incorporated within AVG.

So it looks like AVG and Avast will soon merge into the one product. Maybe it will be called "Agast"... lolo...

Hello Peter,

I am sorry for the late reply. The AVG and Avast will merge. However, it will not happen very soon and the AVG products and feature will work as usual without any problem.

Thank you

AVG has known about this issue for 3 months, and yet they still trot out the same unconstructive replies, eg "uninstall, run remover, run clear, try repair, send logs, etc etc (how many logs do they need to understand the problem?.  They also start their replies in a boilerplate manner.  Doesn't the company understand paying lip-service to clients just sullies their reputation?

I have installed AVG on many clients systems, so this issue has forced me to look at alternatives, I have now uninstalled AVG on my own system, and am trialing bit defender free to assess for my clients..

I suggest that AVG posts on this and other posts on the same issue, when they have resolved the issue.

THANK YOU KEN!

I performed ALL of the steps AVG had suggested to no avail. I actually thought that a SERVICE or PROGRAM may have been the problem so I DISABLED a lot of SERVICES and removed a lot of PROGRAMS. Still not working. After seeing your resolution TODAY I set Terminal Services (which is one of the ones I disabled as a last resort to get AVG working) to start AUTOMATICALLY and though I had a problem STARTING it I eventually was able to (SEE BELOW) and BAMM AVG started working as designed! :-) :-) :-) SO TERMINAL SERVICE SERVICE IS THE KEY. Set it to automatic and start her up to resolve this ugly mess.

Under SERVICES in XP Administrative Tools RIGHT CLICK on Terminal Service and select PROPERTIES. Once in properties select the Startup Type - AUTOMATIC. THEN CLICK ON THE LOG ON tab and ensure that the HARDWARE PROFILE for your system is enabled. If not, enable it (touch nothing else here). NEXT go back to the GENERAL tab and START the service in the Service Status area. This should START and set Terminal Services to AUTOMATIC on system boot. Now that it is Started you can exit Administrative Tools and try AVG - I think you'll be happy :-)

I solved the problem differently from Sebastian, keeping Terminal Services (XP pro sp3) disabled.

The old version installation solution I had proposed on May 5 was only temporary, because after a few days the automatic update forced the bad version.
But I noticed that this situation corresponded to the presence of two types of AVG Software in the list of installed programs: AVG Free, linked to avgix.exe from the previous desktop icon, and AVG Protection, linked to avgui.exe from the new desktop icon. Clicking on this last icon, activated the "Ghost" Gui, but reported errors (all protections disabled). I have argued that there was incompatibility between the two versions kinds.
I went on the list of installed programs and I chose to remove AVG Free, clicking Uninstall on AVG Window Repair / Uninstall request, without touching AVG Protection. Then, after the required reboot, finding that AVG was OK, Gui and Scanning included, except for Disabled Software Protection, I returned to the Install / Uninstall list, and on AVG Protection I chose the Modify / Repair feature from the AVG window.
At the operation completion, I don't remember if after restart or not, the AVG antivirus was working fine, with all the needed features activated, except for the ZEN gui (and that is a good tingh!).
I tryed for many days, also forcing last updates, and I verified all OK, all Right!

I consider the problem solved, but if any inconveniece will happen, there is always the Sebastian solution.

Bye, thanks.

Hello Cris,
I'm sorry to hear that you're also receiving UI failed to load error message on your windows 7 computer. In this case, I request you to repair AVG Protection program on your Windows 7 computer (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG), update (open AVG Internet Security > menu > settings > update) it one more time and reboot your computer once. After reboot, please check if your AVG program is working fine. If the issue still persist please let us know which AVG program you have installed on your computer (AVG Internet Security, AVG Free Antivirus) and also share a screenshot of the error message to assist you further. What A Load of !@#$

What do we KNOW.
There is a merger brewing (or done).
That after MONTHS I am here to tell you that:
"Fill in the case # which is 04544018" IS still not fixed!
Yes two NON Avast/AVG employees came up with "workarounds"(not fixes) but the as AVG updates it seems to force too many UI's down out throat and then there is a conflict (Im not a technical guy).

As this thread started off
"I have been using AVG Free on my old XP-SP3 for some time without any problems, but after updating application Still same problem: "UI failed to load" on a dark-grey background"
Real ZEN is the opposite of having multiple complicated conflicting interfaces (or) boiler plate CS instructions. (STOP sullying the word ZEN by associating anything Avast/AVG is doing with this Ancient path to liberation!!!)

It seems that AVAST/AVG have a related "UI failed to load" issue with XP, 7,8 and 10 so this is no small issue.

Here is my request, give us a free version (keeping the annoying pop up ads to upgrade, (hate it but I get it)).  But in the free version cut out ALL (let me repeat that) ALL of the necessary non Anti virus, rootkit, UP, malware functionality.  get back to your roots. small, light simple reliable.

Just to be clear this is NOT what Avast/AVG is anymore!!!

If CS wants to contact me great! (but I will need a live chat because I don’t understand all the Send this log, send us that log, stuff.)  But I think by now after how many months?  you should know what the issues is (hint) Too much crap forced onto our machines that was not needed, wanted, asked for or properly debugged!!!

If Avast /AVG cant provide "us" with a simple light reliable free antivirus (in the broad sense) tool we will find it elsewhere!

So far the list sounds like
From Art "Zonealarm's free virus scanner.  I recommend it highly for any other hapless XP users still using AVG!"

If you have a specific experience with AVG products that you would like to share with us, we would appreciate hearing about it (link removed). (see how they Don’t actually want customer feedback?  if they did why kill the link?  Afraid of what will happen?

from Michael "In the meantime, I downloaded another virus scan, BitDefender. It's ok, I suppose. But, I honestly preferred AVG over this one (when AVG was properly working)."

From Garth
"I grew tired of the inaction from AVG on this issue.  I bought Malwarebytes Premium 3  - $110 for 2 computers (both Windows XP) for 2 years.  Problem solved.

Goodbye AVG and thanks for all the fish"

Dear Avast/AVG aka Aghast employees please take this posting to your Supervisors (Dear Supervisor take this post to your Manager (Dear Manager take this post to your Director))))!!!

again, I'm just dropping in this thread to see if any improvement has been made. It doesn't look like it to me. I got rid of BitDefender a few weeks ago. I wasn't a fan of it, really. I'm currently running a free trial of Norton, which is pretty good, and is almsot as good as AVG, when it was actually working at its best.

But, I don't believe they have a free version, like AVG (or a lot of others do). If they did, I would have seriously considered using them from now on. I still am hopeful that AVG will sort out their issues soon, so I can return to them. They've been the most user friendly of all the anti viruses that I have tried so far.

Michael,
I regret for the inconvenience caused. But the 'UI failed to load' issue with AVG Free Antivirus issue hasn't been fixed and we need the logs to fix it.
Please follow below instructions to collect diagnostic logs regarding the issue:
1. Please download the AVG SysInfo tool using this link www.avg.com/filedir/util/AVG_SysInfo.exe .
2. Run the downloaded tool.
3. Click Continue to agree with AVG’s license agreement and privacy policy. AVG SysInfo will now gather the necessary data.
4. Once the diagnostic output is ready, you may Attach file or Screenshot to provide us with additional information.
5. Fill in your email address
6. Fill in the case number as 04544018.
7. Click send output.
Then the logs will reach the senior team.
Thank you.

It's a shame they seem to be taking a while sorting it out, I too have been spending huge amounts of time instaling, uninstalling etc. They did contact me and I allowed them to check my installation (on line ) but after half hour they confirmed all was well, which it clearly ISN'T as the problem remains.

To be honest, they have tried to be helpfull by contacting posters on here but untill they accept it's a problem with the latest update, it appears there's nothing WE can do (other than to install an old version and set it to prevent updates of course)

Propably y know what is going 'WRONG' with AVG !!! Payed licences for AVG Internet Security (and/or AVG AntiVirus) + AVG PC Tune Up + AVG Password protection, do have a BIG issue. Searching the web, it seems thousend of customers have simulair problems ie UI Failed to load. This error message does occurs on licensedd or non licensed version's! Even though that the customers aren't that STUPPID, they uninstalled all of AVG, even with AVG Remove Tool (lol), even sending the logs etc., the problem doesn't solve an inch.
Personally as a System Engineer, I even looked further, like regedit in Winxxx. Deleting all entrees for AVG (in administrator mode), and with no trace left, rebooting etc,, problem reoccurs....
Conclusion, AVG doesn't give a sh**, money in, goodbeye.
Conclusion II, sent out a msg/mail to all yr customers y're working on this issue, no general Ticket# rcvd yet for this general problem.
Conslucion III y're far to late to understand and evaluate the problem.
Conslusion IV, y're not willing to help, only the $ counts.

Get every papyed member, with valid license reimboursed if y can't solve the problem in mather of time.
Back off of any publicity with any AVG product.
Wondering if sumulair problems arrise with Android smarthphones and ..pads.
You aren't of any much help, consciously or not, but y do have a major problem.
Keeping y'rself in silicense can mean a lot, pls spread the word if y do have problems. TKX

I succeed to have the problem with UI Failed to load resolved, however. The AVG Anti-Virus, the AVG PC Tune Up and the AVG Password Protection, were payed items.

the service desk tranferred me to the tech support, were honestly didn't much of sollution, however...
Having seen from there part, I payed for those above items, maybe they did an extra effort. No un-install, no AVG Remove Programme etc. They simply tool over my pc (Boot Camp machine with OS-xxx and Windows 7 Pro) and they overinstalled a version from there end, with license key.
After a few reboots all went well, a,d I'm still waiting for any error message on AVG Anti-Virus; AVG PC Tune up and AVG Password protection.....
Mayby the fols in Ireland (yes, check IP) are more cleaverar than the rest....
Hope that this may resolve the master incident for non- or lincesed members. Just give tem a call, Kimberly does the transfers to the tech's, lovely.

Thank you Abirami but... I already had your team take over my PC and they said everything was fine, but the problem is still there.
The only solution I found was to download last years version ( avg-free-2016-131-7924-32-bit ) after totaly wiping out the new one. This works fine for a few days untill you "very kindly " UPDATE it and then the UI problem returns and I am again disconnected from the web. There is a section that I can uncheck automatic updated but it wont let me save that option and just goes ahead anyway!!??
So, if you could just PLEASE STOP the auto updates I would be fine.

Hello all
I recently had a major issue with uninstalling and reinstalling AVG Internet Security on my Windows 7 PC. AVG support staff were excellent and eventually the remote technician succeeded in installing Internet_Security_x64_1825. I managed to run one scan but when I tried to re-open AVG, I experienced the "UI Failed to load" error. I am not an IT expert but I am a person who makes things happen. I've found a solution and I hope it works for you:
1. Edit the PATH environment variable on your PC by adding the path of avgui.exe If you haven’t done this before, please google it.
2. Uninstall AVG Internet Security using Control Panel or RevoUninstaller
3. Run AVG Clear, AVG Remover and AVG RemoverFix, with all the required restarts. If a restart doesn’t happen by itself, do it manually. I understand that AVG Remover isn't supposed to work on more recent versions of AVG Internet Security but it doesn't appear to do any harm.
4.  Restart your computer.
5. Install a slightly older version of AVG Internet Security (Internet_Security_x64_1820.exe worked for me) instead of the most recent versions such as Internet_Security_x64_1825.exe or Internet_Security_1824.exe
6.  Restart your computer again.
7. Cross your fingers! It worked for me.

Been having the same problem for about 3 weeks now.

Only happens after the PCs been running for a few hours and restarting the service (AVGSvc.exe) always brings the UI back up but then, sometime within the next few hours, it'll fail again (i.e. AVGSvc.exe stops for no apparent reason.)

I've tired ALL the numerous suggestions listed in this and other threads (including those by Ty Askash) and none of them have fixed the problem.  Also, because the "symptoms" could be indicative of possible virus/malware activity (i.e. "something" keeps shutting AVG down), I also scanned for such nasties using alternate products with nothing found.

As others have noted, if I install an older version of AVG, the problem goes away until that version gets automatically updated to the lastest one.

Obviously there's some sort of bug in the newest version of AVG that needs to be corrected ASAP as having your Antivirus program randomly stop working is NOT a good thing!!

While waiting for higher level support to contact me (the initial support mentioned above wasn't able to fix my issue) I decided to analyzed my event logs to see if I could figure out what was causing the AVGsrv.exe failures.

No luck there by I did turn up some interesting info.

Prior to 10/23/17 the event log shows that AVGsrv.exe had only ever failed 3 times (on 0722/17, 09/10/17 and 10/07/17) and, in all 3 times, it was automatically restarted by Windows Service Control Manager as it should have been.

Starting on 10/23/17 the failure rate jumped tremendously (6 failures on 10/23/17) and it hasn't let up since (had 8 failures just yesterday and I'm averaging 5 failures/day!)

I also discovered that, after the 3rd failure on any particular day, Windows Service Control Manager doesn't attempt to restart the service even though the Subsequent failures: option for AVGsrv.exe is set to "Restart the Service" per normal (anyone know how to "force" Windows Service Control Manager to always restart failed services even after 3 failures??)

Just FYI, Oct 23 was approximately the time when AVG alerted me I needed to reboot my PC to finish a recent update but, after the reboot, the AVG Antivirus program version [ 17.7.3032 (build 17.7.3660.244) with a release date of 10/03/17 08:14:58 am ] was still exactly the same after the reboot. So exactly what was updated??

Hello Al,
I really appreciate your effort in analyzing the log files. However, I see that we have escalated your case (05473159) to our level 3 technician. We are waiting for level 3 technician resolution regarding AVG Anti-virus free "UI failed to load" error message. We will contact you via email once we receive a reply or in need of more information and we will also let you know about the AVG version updates (17.7.3032). Your patience is much appreciated in this matter.
Best regards,

Ok, after a bit of research I found there is a way to force Windows Service Control Manager to always restart a failed service regardless of how many times it's failed on the same day.

The trick is to set the Reset failed count after: option on the Recovery tab to 0 days which prevents the failure counter from ever exceeding 1. That means SCM treats any failures of that service as if it was the very first one of the day so it always uses the First failure: recovery option (basically you've created an "always restart this service it fails" loop.)

I tired this trick on my own PC and, even though AVGSvc.exe has failed 7 times today, it was successfully restarted every single time (unlike before where it wasn't restarted after the 3rd failure) and AVG keep running with no special "user action" required (i.e. no error notifications on the AVG task bar icon and the UI always opened normally.)

BTW, this is NOT a fix for whatever's causing AVGSvc.exe to randomly die!  It's simply a temporary workaround I devised to keep the AVG Antivirus service up and running until such time as AVG can figure out the real problem and implement a permanent fix.

FYI, in order to make the above change, you'll need to temporarily disable the AVG Self Protection module (Menu >> Settings >> Troubleshooting >> uncheck Enable AVG Self Protection module and answer yes when asked if you really want to do this.)

NOTE: Be sure to reenable the AVG Self Protection module once you've made the change to the AVGSvc.exe service.
Al EastAl East
I found out what was causing AVGSvc.exe to crash (but not why) and fixed it.

Going thru my event log I noticed regular occurrences of the following error message…
  • Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address ????
…and tracked them back to 2 different VPN tunnels installed on my PC
  • Sonicwall Global VPN Client
  • Juniper Network Connect VPN Client
Both VPNs were installed quite some time ago (Sonicwall back in March 2015 & Juniper in Feb 2017) to allow me to provide remote connect to a customer's AS400 for software support and neither has been active since then.

Not sure exactly why they suddenly started interfering with the AVG service (especially since all 3 have coexisted just fine on my PC for some time and the above DHCP error started showing up in the logs back in June but AVG didn't start failing until late October) but, since uninstalling both VPNs on 11/04/17, I haven't had a single instance of AVGSvc.exe failing.

So my problem has been solved.
Ask a question
Struggling with non-AVG technology? We can fix that, too!
