online security

I have a notice on the bottom right hand corner of my screen that says 'Your online security is incomplete'.Then asks, Install Now. What is this for? Is it a marketing ploy or is it a problem? I am dumb when it comes to technology!

Thank you for answering, but I'm afraid, I just can't do what you say - I really can't cope with it - too old!. I think I will just assume that it is for marketing as it also says 'Install online security features for maximum protection'. I have AVG free installed.

Hello Maureen,
We completely understand your situation.
The reason for requesting a screenshot is that we can identify the exact issue you are facing. Please be informed that those are our legitimate pop up from AVG and it cannot be stopped. The pop up will be stopped after purchasing the paid product. Thank you for understanding.

This is what she is talking about.  I have used AVG for years on many computers, and for the most part I am willing to put up with occasional messages asking me to upgrade, but this one is ridiculous.  It now comes up every single day.  If it does not stop soon then I will be changing all of our computers here and at work to a new vendor.  We don't need a hard sell like this for features we explicitly indicated that we don't want.  Saying no once should be enough.

Aravind is clearly an incompetent agent or perhaps even a bot.  So far, he/she/it has stated that as a "legitimate pop up from AVG", this annoyance can not be stopped without paying or allowing the "features" to be installed.  That user has also posted/pasted the same disconcerting link to screenshot instructions 3 times, once to a person who already included a screenshot.

Here is what I have observed about the original issue:
  • AVG is creating a pop-up offering to install unknown features/software with unknown effects.
  • There is no "more information" button/link to properly identify what will be installed/altered.
  • There is no safe way to disable this annoyance without ditching AVG software entirely or pay for (again) unknown software/differences.
  • The only match I could find about this error online so far is this forum thread.
  • The only "official" answer on this forum thread is that you should repeatedly post screenshots of the obvious so that you can have the obvious answer that spamming users with questionable pop-ups FROM SECURITY SOFTWARE is intentional.
  • Users have to sign in here (generally sacrificing even more privacy information) just to get your attention and point out the problems in your software.  (By having a forum for support, it seems you are hoping the community or random Internet users will solve your product problems for you.  I assure you, AVG: in this case, you are the cause of the problem.)

If the user base and the oblivious AVG customer service staff would like proof that this window comes from AVG (unless also impersonated by malware), I shall prove it for the window I have at this time and have already declined at least twice.  (Impersonation by malware is a fair point, because let's face it: if you're going to have SECURITY SOFTWARE causing pop-ups with malicious marketing in mind, you not only give malware a "legitimate" window to forge, you're also acting as malware.  Consider the facts; do not defer this to your legal team for a "defense" - it's not a really "legitimate" stance to defend.)

Now for something more interesting... "AVG ZEN Toaster"
Shall we take that to mean "pops up all the time", "gives you burnt products", and/or "toasts your computer"?

So please provide the screenshot and then we can assist you better.

If the product itself is actually helpful, my sample case is "AVG AntiVirus FREE", although this behavior SHOULD NOT be present in any "legitimate" software.

See above post by Balasubramanian for the most ridiculous answer ever. He/she is representing the supposed internet security professionals? So unbelievable to me that I spent 10 minutes creating an account, logging into it probably five times, working silly CAPTCHAs just to post this reply. I, too, was brought here because of the highly annoying pop-up prompt. The image was successfully posted by Hans Weber, above. What is happening to AVG? Over the years, I've recommended it to friends and family, who have purchased paid versions. It really used to be the best.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hello Craig,

I sincerely apologize for that. We are using a tool to post answers in our community so I failed to notice the screenshot attached by Hans Weber previously.
We are still best, we need to confirm that "First Last" customer is getting the same popup as Hans Weber so that is the reason we asked for screenshot to him.
If you are getting the same popup then we would like to inform you that it is our legitimate popup and it is to install the AVG Web Tuneup or AVG Secure Search add-on to your default web browser.
First LastFirst Last
The options mentioned are still suspicious as we are not told which software will be installed, AVG Web Tuneup's page does not really show the background of how it works, and search replacements (such as AVG Secure Search) can be expected to be/contain their own tracking/advertising systems.  I can easily locate some samples of bad user experience with both products, and I can not determine whether secure search always uses Google, Yahoo, or the user's choice of engine.  Again, I see no reason users should be subjected to a blind choice of "install what we suggest without question," or "say no for now until you accidentally agree to let us change whatever we want."

The screenshots are posted inline below as requested, therefore it is not my fault that they will be large in this thread.  Continued declaration that this sort of pop-up is "legitimate" will result in virtual machine testing as well as posting the experiences of others (previews include "Awful Foistware" and "Invasive Hijacking Software"...)

We are well beyond "patience".  I do, however, have persistence in insisting that security software not act like Malware whether it's free or otherwise.  I am keeping archives of this thread in case the recommendation from a "senior level", management, marketing, or legal team is "make the complaint disappear".  The previous complaints about pop-ups have not caused them to be removed from AVG's products and methods; and existing complaints about AVG Web Tuneup and AVG Secure Search individually suggest that their installation and alteration behavior are not welcome when they are experienced.  I can only assume users would find the surprise installation of software that alters their browser settings and experience would be unwelcome.  I can tell you that I despise surprise alterations, search hi-jacking, forceful changing of settings without regard for previous values (including homepage); and I am making sure this issue and response (or lack thereof) is documented.

The Web Tuneup software is the absolute worst of all programs. My friend ended up installing it accidently and It filled up his hard disk by making multiple copies of the disk's content to it which of course caused number of problems including wasting one days work.

https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b00000008svJAAQ

What comes to the topic of this thread I also get seriously pissed by the "Your online security is incomplete" -nag which is displayed to me every single day. If I decline the offer once then why in earth are you running the offer to me ever again?

If this is some sort of marketing thing then imagine how pathetic that is! "We want you to install our software by nagging you over and over and over again until you give up and accept the offer." It's basically the same level as a regular spammer who sells fake Rolex's through emails. Yea, you don't want our ads, but let us force feed them to you anyway.

It goes without saying that this kind of advertising will never result any action from me.

John SmithJohn Smith
Warning: LART required!

I too am being nagged by AVG Free to 'upgrade' with continual "Your online security is incomplete" messages that I have been unable to disable. How many times do you want me to say it?

NO THANKS!

Please fix this misbehaviour of your software.

I have been a happy user of AVG Free for many years -- and I believe that I have paid AVG more than enough over the years by dint of word-of-mouth recommendations. If goodwill is no longer sufficient, you will leave me no choice but to look elsewhere: and I can promise you that the reward for your nagging is that I will pay a competitor rather than you!

Incidentally, I'm totally appalled by the lack of empathy shown by AVG representatives here for the original poster. Rather than post a new issue I tracked this thread down so that I could say so (and I would also say that the design of your forum software leaves a great deal to be desired!).

... and if someone tells me to provide a screenshot, that will simply prove to me that nobody is listening. If you try to pretend that you don't know by now what pop-up window we're talking about here, you're even more clueless than this incident suggests.

I am having the same problem on two computers. Continuous popups after the user has already selected "No Thanks" are spam, not a legitimate marketing campaign.
M KM K
I'm getting the same pop-up every day now and each time selecting "No Thanks" on my free version. To be clear, the annoying message will not make me select the upgrade option; I can see myself uninstalling AVG completely instead if it won't change. It is getting ridiculous, just doesn't make sense at all.

Hello Maureen
Try uninstalling first each program, AVG
https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en_US&urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG&retUrl=support_win

Then if you have AVG Zen, uninstall it and it

Then install any program you are using, or package AVG Protection, Performance or Ultimate

So-called "Guru", would it not be more appropriate to confirm whether this is a "marketing ploy" as the original poster inquired (and malicious marketing at that)?

Instead, it seems your instructions are to uninstall every existing AVG product before installing payware in their place.  If you're going to ignore every additional post and relevant research, the question was, "Is it a marketing ploy or is it a problem?"  I am declaring that it is a problem (although intended by AVG) BECAUSE it is bad marketing, annoying, likely to cause additional problems that are not even hinted for users, and presents an appearance template for more intentional malware to copy.  (If AVG has pop-ups like this that are "legitimate" [meaning "intended" as no intrusive advertising is really legitimate] and recommended by AVG personnel, why not have a keylogger/botnet client/rootkit installer pop-up look as similar as possible?)

Also, did you know that your wording, "If you have purchased a license to activate the AVG product purchased from you a valid license" makes no sense?  It does not qualify as a sentence on its own or as a continuation of the text before the link.

I'm seeing the same issue (as per screenshot from Hans Weber). Three days in a row so far. I figured I'll leave it until I've got time to deal with it (ie the weekend) and if it's not gone by then I'll uninstall AVG and go back to using MSE. I know that MSE isn't exactly the world's best antivirus solution, but at least it doesn't continually annoy me.

For reference: Vista x64 SP2. AVG Free, installed about a week ago, having uninstalled Avira for much the same reason (nagging).

Hello Maureen,
I apologize for the delay in responding to you. Thank you for your patience.
If you click on "Install now" pop up you will install latest version of the AVG 2016 - if AVG Free was installed it will be upgraded to the Trial of IS.
Please feel free to contact us for any further assistance. Thank you.

WE DON'T WANT TO INSTALL THE TRIAL VERSION!!!!

Once we have said no once we should not have to say no every day!!
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Steve,

We can understand your concern but this is our legitimate Business campaign popup and it cannot be stopped. It is a time limited campaign and we request our customers to ignore it if they aren't interested to try the trial version.
Please submit your feedback to us via http://www.avg.com/product-feedback .
Thank you.

Well that response settles it. I am uninstalling AVG and I am not putting it on any more computers. I've been using AVG for years on numerous computers, but the increasing intrusiveness of AVG in the last couple years makes it little better than the malware it is supposed to protect against.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Brian, this is our only way of marketing our programs so please submit your feedback through this link: http://www.avg.com/product-feedback .
John SmithJohn Smith
@Maureen I feel for you. Computer systems drive me nuts, with their constant 'upgrades' (which quite often are worse than the previous versions). It seems that every software provider has succumbed to groupthink: they're so convinced that their own Widget(tm) is so wonderful and essential to their user base that they can do whatever they want and get away with it. Sadly, they all too often fail to comprehend that people have lives that don't revolve around their own. For every one that learns this lesson, it seems that another two pop up in their place!

@Balasubramanian

1. I find it hard to believe your statement that this campaign 'cannot be stopped'.

2. If it is indeed 'time-limited', I think it might help to indicate what time span we're talking about. A week? A month? A year?

3. After this unstoppable 'time-limited' campaign is done, can your userbase expect similar ones offering different 'benefits' in the future?

Answers to such questions will help me determine whether to follow Brian J's lead by uninstalling AVG -- and then apologising to everyone I've recommended AVG to over the years for having given them bad advice.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hello John,

My statement that the campaign popups cannot be stopped means that you will be getting regular campaign popups from AVG if you have installed our program.
There is no specific time period for such campaigns but each campaign will be there for a certain days and then you will be getting the next one if it is released.
When you click on the each of the campaign popups you can understand which program or toolbar is going to get installed, if you are interested to try that you can proceed with the installation, if not please cancel it and ignore such popups.
Steve RainbirdSteve Rainbird
I suspect by using this approach you will lose more customers than you gain.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Steve, we can understand that but we are providing the exact facts regarding the campaign popups.
Since we are running a reputed Security providing company we are in need of marketing our advanced programs to our customers.
So we couldn't avoid or stop campaigning our programs but however, we request you to submit the feedback to us via http://www.avg.com/product-feedback so that we take some actions in the future.
Thank you.
Steve RainbirdSteve Rainbird
@Balasubramanian I appreciate that it is marketing and there is nothing you can do.  I have left feedback and if it doesnt stop in the next few days you will lose me as a current and potential customer forever.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Steve, thank you for understanding but I didn't mean that after submitting the feedback you won't get these popups. I clearly mentioned that it might be taken into consideration by our concerned team and any changes can be expected in future.
pizda piczkapizda piczka
Well it looks like this popup is some kind of marketing scam which has massively back-fired and there don't seem to be any plans by AVG to fix it anytime soon.
Can anyone suggest a replacement product that doesn't behave exactly like the malcious software it was meant to protect us all from?
Disappointed CustomerDisappointed Customer
"this is our only way of marketing our programs"

Let's take a look at your marketing campaign. A message which claims that my online security is incomplete in red lettering! I am asked to install your obscure "online security" to solve the problem and you offer me the option to either install or to decline. There's no option for details so that I could see what your so-called "online security" is actually all about and on top of that the same alert-like pop-up is displayed to me every single day even though I declined it just 24 hours ago. Is this really the best what your "marketing team" managed to put together?

I'm asking this, because the concept is pretty identical to what one finds from all over the internet. I'm talking about the style of marketing which all the little shady software developers use. It's based on scaring people. "You are in danger! You must install our software to maximize the protection". This kind of marketing is obviously aimed for all computer-illiterate people, namely the elderly who just don't know what they are doing. They will accept your "offer", but not because the software is particularly good, but because they were scared into doing that. That is the lowest form of marketing if you ask me.

You wrote:"Since we are running a reputed Security providing company."

Keep on running your marketing campaign and you'll be reputed for something which might be quite difficult to turn around.
Craig SniderCraig Snider
Has this marketing campaign been a success for AVG? I guess time will tell, but it has worked for me. Uninstallation will be complete at next restart. I fought it but AVG won. On my end, this really started years ago when I "sold" the paid version of AVG to family members. They had lots of trouble preventing
AVG Search from hijacking and complicating their ability to search. This toolbar/search tag-team magically reappeared multiple times after I 'uninstalled' it. I've had my own experience of definition updates (twice daily) rendering this computer temporarily inoperable with CPU 100% and adding ~ 100MB to "System Commit" which I couldn't manage to find and reduce. Most recently, I temporarily disabled AVG and kept receiving a daily "Your online security is incomplete" popup. This has helped
me realize that AVG is now more trouble than it's worth, hence me taking time to compose this. After revisiting and reading this page of complaints each day, this is the least I could do. Nice to see that it's not just me and thanks to all of you who have taken the time to go into more detail, post screenshot
images, etc. Lastly, I'll add that I've been using FireFox since 2010 with AdBlock Plus as my only add-on. AVG hasn't alerted me or flagged anything since. So I really feel I don't even need it. Every couple of months, I'll run MalwareBytes and if it finds anything, it's minor. Could anyone recommend some lite, low-maintenance AV for a minimalist user like myself? Thanks in advance.
John SmithJohn Smith

@Disappointed Customer: you've hit the nail squarely on the head. This is not a 'legitimate' campaign; it's clearly designed to scare people (people just like my poor old mum!) into giving AVG more money, and I agree with you that it's the lowest form of marketing; the worst kind of spam possible.

My thanks too to those who have cared enough to respond here. This situation will only change if AVG can be made to realise how much of a mistake this new tactic of theirs is.

May I suggest that whenever you visit here, you provide information of alternatives to AVG, and perhaps add appropriate 'likes' to other posts in this thread, too?

I'm off to browse the 48 results for "antivirus + free" on tucows...

If AVG feel that they have to use such aggressive marketing tactics in order to get people to buy their product, then the answer is obvious : don't offer a free version.  Otherwise, please stop badgering us.

I left a message with your feedback page as I am having the same issue.  I have been with AVG for many years but I will dump it like an ugly girlfriend if you all don't stop spamming me about buying services.  If I want an intrusive AV program that I can't get rid of I will install McAffee (shutters) or worse yet go back to Norton... MSE is starting to look good compared to this garbage.  What happened AVG?  You know how many of my friends computers I have installed your software on?  I'm regretting every single install I have ever done now.  gezus I am considering Avast at this point.  Go ahead with your pop ups but once I click "no thanks" leave it at that!  What a shame for AVG to go this way.  First it was the rediculous tool bars, then the search engine and now this.  How long do you think your users are going to put up with this???

WOW. after reading most of this page im just going to uninstall. what a friggen joke. is this seriously how you guys engage with your clients?! they give you a problem and instead of answer you just keep asking for more info that has already been provided. I got to the point where i decided i wanted to no longer to have anything to do with AVG so i decided to leave feedback stating why, as you so kindly asked someone else to do. so i click the link and spend 5 minutes typing only to find that you cant even click submit, some error about field comes up. every field is complete far as i can tell, so heres your feedback in a nutshell. YOUR DAILY POP UPS MADE ME UPSET, COMING TO FIND A SOLUTION ON YOUR HELP FORUMS I FIND THIS INCOMPETENCY, SO I WILL BE FINDING ANOTHER ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE TO DO THE EXACT SAME THING AS YOU WERE DOING FOR ME (nothing because you have not once in 7 years found a threat) WITHOUT THE POP UPS. i would like to add that i was ok with the monthly or weekly things that pop up, asking me to buy now and then... those are fine. i get you need to market. but when i said no, you didnt bother me about it again for a long enough time that it didnt upset me to see it again. but since last update, its been everyday, i come home and i see you trying to scam me into buying something by trying to tell me part of my AVG isnt complete. after clearing that up, now cya.

I to, have just uninstalled this joke of a software AVG. I am an I.T. Manager and have had the free version installed at home as well as at one of the small offices I manage. But due to the scareware tactics AVG uses I will not be purchasing any products from AVG. I was trying the free version at work to demo the product as a possible solution. But AVG uses the same tactics as illegitimate scareware trojans. So I can't possibley recommend this for use. As far as I'm concerned AVG has become the very thing with which security products should be fighting

I agree with everyone else on this issue.  I am sick of telling AVG multiple times a day that I do NOT want to upgrade!  And I too attempted to leave feedback; however, the system tells me that field '' [sic] cannot be validated.  The entire form is filled out, yet AVG's system insists that field '' (read blank) has an issue.  Either get rid of the popups or I too will leave!

Where is the thumbs down option?? The AVG tech responses seem so robotic. I too am getting the annoying pop-up for what seems 2 times a day for a week. Finally tired of it and I find this thread. I am also a LONG TIME AVG fan... or was.

Every thing that's been pointed out above by AVG's clients, especially First Last is SPOT ON !

It's mainly just a real PITA for me to have to stop what I'm doing to tell this POS pop-up for the umpteenth time 'No thanks', BUT the REAL issue is I've convinced my 90 yr. old Mother over the years to trust this product and now I have to be concerned that she's going to take them up on it thinking she HAS TO in order to remain safe and install the crapola she DOES NOT NEED and can only cause her grief in the long run.

For YEARS I've recommended AVG to anyone who needed a reasonably decent anti-virus program, BUT NO MORE, at least until they decide to pay attention to their serious clients... I'm not holding my breath as they're no different than any of the other 'we know better than you' what you need... like say Google, Mozilla, etc.... all of who pay NO attention to the feedback and desires of even their most loyal clients. They just can't leave well enough alone, they jes gotta keep 'improving' it, and worse in some cases, like Firefox essentially ramming updates down your throat.

It's a really SAD state of affairs, but in this f'd up world there's way too many things that we're stuck with for any number of reasons, too numerous to list... but I will give one example, WM who's one of the worst companies on the face of the earth, but when you're on a very limited FIXED income you're pretty much forced to deal with them since for MOST things no one can compete with their prices. About the only company I have a great relationship with overall is AZ.

At least there are other AV programs that are FREE and on par with AVG's performance so we're not necessarily stuck.

Y'all have a nice day...

PS: I will also be doing as First Last, which is to say retaining a copy of this thread so after it 'disappears' there'll be at least TWO copies floating around to remind Folks what was done, or more to the  point NOT done, and said by the AVG 'Gurus'...

I find all these replys very interesting. Also, AVG's replys. What AVG is doing by marketing their paid versions by using pop-up's, is no better than the malware that it used to protect us from. AVG offers just basic protection to their free version. They need to find another way to market their paid versions. AVG always bragged about their software being totally "Free" for home users. It has become a nusence.
Tom LucasTom Lucas
I have been nagged by this popup message for few days now, I can't stand it and I don't think purchasing it will change anything. Once they get greedy their marketting managers get pushed to make money and the nags start popping everywhere PAID or NOT.
It's time to get another AV being free or not is not the problem here, the problem is we know this will go on and on forever.
I have had that kind of experience through 35 years of computer experience.
Jim CompuguideJim Compuguide
I think a simple solution to this problem is to get rid if the "Zen" part of AVG. I suspect it is generating the popups. Unfortunately you can't just uninstall Zen - you need to remove AVG as well.
I did the following:
1. Uninstall "AVG Protection" and reboot
2. Uninstall "AVG" and reboot (this is the "Zen" add-on)
3. Go to the excellent site "Ninite.com" and select AVG installation - it will install AVG without the Zen add-on
Hopefully this will fix it

After getting this popup for the fifth time this week, I decided to google around and ended up here. Oh boy. I think I'll be uninstalling and finding my "complete security" somewhere else, thanks.
Joe BloggsJoe Bloggs

To Jim Compuguide- by uninstall in step 1 I assume you mean disable AVG protection, then uninstall.in step 2?

AVG, you're doing yourself no good whatever by your approach to sorting, or rather NOT sorting, this problem for your users. Look at this sorry chapter of complaints above me. We may all be users of the free version only, but we've recommended it to others, many of whom will have gone on to buy one of your paid for products. Clearly you're going to be losing a previously very good reputation.

I too am uninstalling because of this "legitimate Business campaign".
Been using AVG Free for many years because it is hassle free and never nags me. Now that has changed.
I just created my account to show how displeased I am with the software.

I understand that the pop up is a good way of letting users know about online security, but if we say "no thanks" then it should be disabled. No means no.
Jim CompuguideJim Compuguide
@Joe Bloggs - "by uninstall in step 1 I assume you mean disable AVG protection, then uninstall.in step 2?"

No, You should find two items in your "Programs and Features" list, one called "AVG Protection" and the other called "AVG" both need to be uninstalled.

Aravind,

Here are all of the images you requested.  I agree with others that it seems like the new persistent alert is part of avg zen - I did not try to install that product, but it seems to have been auto-installed at some point.

I guess my next step is to try uninstalling all avg products and re-installing just the free product without zen if that is possible.  If not, then I'll move on to another company's products at home and at work.

Win 10, btw.

The AVG technician in this thread is a joke.

I think what people ask is to get rid of the new AVG popup reminder about installing AVG online in the right bottom corner of the screen  ,

Well here is the solutiion .  Open AVG , Select Options and Advanced settings , then uncheck "Display system tray notifications"   Hopefully that should work .

I have been a user of the free AVG software for 10 years, I am not interested in a paid version . AVG will try to trick you into get the Trial version and then pay for it.

This is just very annoying and it doesnt help when the AVG technician clearly have no clue or not interested in helping customers on a free version .

Henke KokoHenke Koko
Btw, I hope my easy instructions to uncheck notifications will work , I guess I will find out tomorrow.

If the popup is back and I answer No Thnaks , the popup should stay away. but as I understand it doesnt  .
And what kind of stupid reply is this :
"We can understand your concern but this is our legitimate Business campaign popup and it cannot be stopped. It is a time limited campaign and we request our customers to ignore it if they aren't interested to try the trial version. "

We are not interested in the trial version , are you people really stupid ?

Alas, Henke, unchecking "Display...notifications" does not stop this particular pop-up - nor any other marketing pop-ups as far as I can see.  I have always had this option deselected and still get them.  I also delete the awacs, banners and tune-up folders in Program Files (86x) but there seems to be no way of stopping them.

@Jim Compuguide -

Please let us know if re-installing w/o Zen works.

Recently had other issues with AVG and it was suggested I uninstall and reinstall AVG w/ or w/o Zen, but in either case I would LOSE ALL history, logs, etc., which I did not want to do. They also pointed out that if installed w/o Zen and one later on wished to use the Zen functions, one would have to uninstall and reinstall AVG w/ Zen and of course would LOSE ALL history, logs, etc. So, if one might ever wish to use Zen it made sense to me to have it installed as it DIDN'T APPEAR to cause any issues so I didn't mind it being installed.

I resolved the aforementioned issues so haven't done an uninstall / reinstall, so still have Zen.

Awaiting your response [ or any one who knows that has tried this and knows FOR SURE the correct answer ].

TIA,

I was getting weary of this nag too.  Yesterday, I rolled up my sleeves and found a link that was described as the "real" download page for AVG Free.  Here's that link:

http://www.avg.com/ww-en/download.prd-afh-free

This morning, I uninstalled AVG and AVG Zen through the Control Panel.  I used Revo Uninstaller Pro to remove all remnants of the software.  As an interesting sidenote, there were registry entries specifically for ad placement on the screen ...

After a reboot, I installed the version of AVG free that I had downloaded from the above link.  I did a "custom install" and bypassed the installation of AVG Zen.  I don't need or want that.  A standalone version of AVG Free has worked well for me since 2005.

I'm fairly certain the ads are tied to AVG Zen because, on another computer, I went through this exercise earlier in February and have not received nags from the software since installing the standalone version.

I agree with the concensus of people on this thread.  The responses from AVG support have been rather lame.  I know the software is free and I shouldn't complain but, regardless, after not having to confront this daily up until the last release of AVG Free, the persistence of these "mandatory ads" was more than annoying.  If I say "no thanks" to an ad, I should only have to do that once, not every bloody day!

I hope my solution helps someone here.

Mike CMike C
There's another way to stop these pop-up ads which doesn't involve uninstalling or downloading anything:

1. Turn off router (maybe I'm being paranoid here!)
2. Disable AVG self protection: Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock).
Select to Temporarily Disable AVG Protection.
Agree the default timeout - 10 minutes should be plenty.
3. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and Navigate to:
   C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\Av\
4. Delete the following three folders: Awacs, Banners, Tuneup*
Do not delete anything else. If you accidentally delete anything else go to the recycle bin and
restore it.   *Note: If you have already paid for the Tuneup addon then keep this folder.
5. Enable AVG self protection:  Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock).
Select to Enable AVG Protection - can take 20 seconds or so to fully activate.
6. Switch on router.

When a new version of AVG is installed you will have to repeat this process.  But this once a year is more satisfying than clicking "No Thanks" every bloody day!

Deleting Awacs, etc. does not prevent these marketing pop-ups. :-(  See my post above, and Alan Binch's response thereto!

I think Mike C solution over actually works , thanks.

According to your own site:

"What is Adware?
Adware refers to the class of malware that presents unwanted advertisement using intrusive and at times dangerous methods. It is a contraction of the words advertisement and malware."

AVG has now become ADWARE.  This is very unfortunate that this company has decided that they are the very thing they claim to remove.

PS a program that removes other malware can still be malware if it produces unwanted affects on your system.
Annoyed CustomerAnnoyed Customer
I have bought licenses for AVG many times over the years. but not on every computer, I often use the free version. I used to recommend AVG to my customers, but no longer. When I next need to purchase an antivirus I will be looking elsewhere.

Annoying customers is NEVER a valid marketing ploy, you risk alienating your user base as you have with me and countless others I suspect. You have managed to move from an essential product to the malware category. Congratulations.

I tried to leave product feedback on your site and the form is broken as it would not process the message, so here you go, for all the world to see.
Incase the 45 times I have told your popup that I do not want to install more software, here is is another 100 or more times.

I't been a nice run with AVG, but while the intrusion is something you almost have to expect, the company's position is shocking, particularly when they cannot comprehend that we use their product to stop items that look just like what they are putting on our screens.  Gotta go, it's time time uninstall AVG

I'm trying to wrap my head around this thing that keeps popping up on me all the time now since Feb 18th according to the files installed by AVG. Viewing task manager I see 2 instances of the avguix.exe PID 7432 file that run during this adware attack by AVG. Under startup I saw AVG UI (re)starter had 2 instances. There is no AVG task added to task scheduler. So where is this part of the program coming from? Maybe, avguix.exe needs to be blocked...

AVG I have used your products for years and haven't had a bad experience. I've installed both free and paid versions of AVG to clients yet, I'm starting to get calls and this is annoying me. Please fix this soon!

AVG also did this last August and generated tons of complaints.  If you go to this link, you'll see that many answers from AVG were identical to this circus, word-for-word.  Personally, I don't remember an unusual number of pop-ups back then; they only come up occasionally which is okay.  This may mean that (a) the current campaign really is for a limited time, or (b) the previous campaign was only directed at certain AVG users, and we are now the targets of the current campaign.  Hopefully this one will run its course soon, or I'm switching to Avast in about a week.  I have been satisfied with AVG until now and have recommended it to family and friends.  Here's the link to AVG's similar pop-up campaign last summer, with the same lame answers from them:

Good find, Mr. Wilke.  The end of that thread became the same problem as this thread with the "Your online security is incomplete" pop-up.  In that thread, as well, we have morons lying that the "main goal is to keep our customers happy" when clearly, desgining pop-ups with the possibility of stealing focus, conflicting software in use (especially full-screen windows), and in any way annoying users is contrary to that "goal" -- and then they link to a broken feedback page.  For quick examples, these morons include Avinash, Hariharkumar, Aravind, Balasubramanian.

The existence of "AVG ZEN Toaster" with Chrome associations strongly confirms the intent to pop up dynamic content with web-style rendering.  There are other things done to the pop-up which prevent even advanced users from determining where the information came from and what will happen if components are clicked ("No Thanks", "Install Now", the X to close the window, the rectangle itself).  Again, this design behavior is completely suspicious and must be considered malicious as the results are unknown unless you're willing to take the chance and click something, which is the concept upon which what pop-up malware depends -- users going "I wonder what will happen..." or "I tried to close it."  Even if AVG continues to try to defend this behavior as a "business campaign", it is a current template for all "other" malware to copy in hopes of convincing someone that a malicious software can be trusted because it looks like (thus "came from") AVG.

Mr. Fraser has been even more direct about AVG becoming malware than I was, and he is quite accurate.  Scare tactics, lack of honesty and documentation, intrusive alterations to browser (and other?) settings via additional AVG programs (consider that malware entry points are commonly used to put more malware on targets), and instead of ever fixing the problems in behavior and design, AVG says to go use a broken feedback page while they continue their design behavior and continue attempting to spread unhelpful/tracking/dangerous software while trying to "upsell" people into their paid software.

AVG Secure Search
http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Secure-Search/3000-18510_4-75985009.html

AVG has not gotten back to me regarding my phone inquiry into this issue.  It has been a week since my confirmation that this is intended AVG behavior with an unknown amount of users being subjected to this behavior.  The issue involving "AVG Web TuneUp" wasting space with suspicious cache behavior (linked by a "Disappointed Customer" above) has been "unsolved" since December 8th.)

While shaming AVG is unlikely to work, public exposure to people more competent in security than the morons representing "AVG Technologies" here may result in improvements or the take-down of this malware.

Reddit may get some overall attention, and if this got to the chan boards (and similar places) and caught the attention of the bored and ambitious, there could be more clones of the pop-up in an alarmingly short period of time.

AVG's marketing and programming employees have been aware of this problem since its conception and through its release.  AVG has received feedback via the feedback pages (when it worked), the forum, and the support phone lines.  This forum (support.avg.com) has been aware of this specific pop-up for weeks (February 12, 2016 via https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b0000000DA01AAG) and similar behavior for months (that link was started on August 13, 2015); and a report via AVG's phone support system was entered February 21, 2016 citing this thread and its images.  It seems time for full public disclosure regarding the malware and vulnerability that AVG represents (and for all other so-called security software exhibiting similar malicious or exploitable behavior).

The download.cnet.com link for "AVG Secure Search" is for the reviews; please do not download that software if you value the computer/system you use to view the page.

I have just read the 83 comments of people having this pop up on their computer. I have it also but  fist about 2 weeks ago AVG did an update, since then my compute shas slowed right down. I unistalled AVG and then reinstalled it, still like a snail. I have run the scan plus another scan but it's not showing anything. I have been using AVG for many years and recommended it to many people over the years and this is the first time that annoying pop up appears saying my security is incomplete and it's the first time it has slowed right down after an upgrade. I am seriously thinking of deleting AVG completely and finding another one. Many have mentioned Avast, I guess it's worth a try unless AVG would know why it slowed down after the upgrade.

This is without a doubt the single most destructive thing you could do to your user base.   First, to give them a popup that will NOT turn off, then to glibly claim that it is marketing and cannot be turned off.
I not only will NOT purchase any additional protection from an annoying popup, I would actively NOT choose an AVG pay product knowing that you care so little for your customers that you would both annoy them multiple times a day and then LIE to them that it cannot be turned off.

Wow, it is astonishing that any organisation can be so stupid.  I am so fed up with AVG popups (basically malware) interfering with my day-to-day activity.  And the "support" from AVG is the worst I have ever seen.  Talk about shooting themselves in the foot.

I am today uninstalling all AVG software from all 16 computers.

I'm not sure how many times I hear from AVG that this is "legitimate Business campaign popups", but let me tell you this:  This is my legitimate consumer choice decision: you have lost 16 users today.  I wish I could pop up on your screens every day to remind you so you can click "no thanks" but still see it again the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day,  and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day....................

Hi Fellow Suffering AVG'rs...

Regarding the following solutions from two threads, can any one UNEQIVOCALLY state that they work absolutely positively for sure; i.e. over a period of say a several days, restarts, etc....  there appears to be some doubt based on other posts, at least for the latest updated version. Note that the www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/avg-2013-2014-disable-the-advertising-tiles-and-panel.357139/ noted as the source of Charles Boyce's posted solution clearly shows 2013-2014, but not 2015-2016...

Also, if one follows this advice to delete the suggested folders / files, wouldn't it also be possible to MOVE and / or RENAME file or ext. vs deleting, and if it doesn't work restore them to their original location / name, OR is that going to too much trouble vs just deleting which presumably allows complete restoration of all deletions to their original status with a few clicks putting everything back as if nothing had happened...

From this thread...

@Mike C

@Charles Boyce

I found an answer through some easy googling that seems to have worked...there are three folders in the AVG folder in Program Files that you need to delete, but you have to disable avg first...

1. Disable AVG self protection:

Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Temporarily Disable AVG Protection
Agree the default timeout - usually 10 minutes?

2. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and Navigate to:

C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG201x\ ...... for 32bit systems (201x means 2013 or 2014)
C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG201x\ for 64bit systems

3. Delete the following three folders: Awacs, Banners, Tuneup

Do not delete anything else you see inside the AVG201x folder.
If you accidentally delete anything else go to the recycle bin and restore it.
Note: If you have already paid for the Tuneup addon then keep this folder

4. Close the My Computer/Explorer window

5. Enable AVG self protection:

Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Enable AVG Protection - takes 20 seconds or so to fully activate.

I stole this info from http://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/avg-2013-2014-disable-the-advertising-tiles-and-panel.357139/

This is totally unacceptable and to state that "Many of our users find them useful" is complete scapegoat. They were "finding them useful" before and managed without them so why would "Many of our users find them useful" all of a sudden now? This popup is unacceptable. It does not even explain that it is acutally a prompt to upgrade to the "trial" version of AVG "complete" which will then nag you with a message that your "trial" period has x amount of days left of protection every day!
The olny way to then revert to the free verson is to go to uninstall and select "install free version" as an option, which I had to google to find out. For people who are not tech savy this is far to complicated. For people who are, this is far to irritatiing. On top of that we get a double post from tech support spouting the same drivel.

No. Unacceptable. If this is not fixed within a week I will uninstall and recommend evey person I previously recommened AVG to to also uninstall and use another antivirus.

Hello Balabhadra,
You can find answer to your question together with your another post here https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b0000000DA01 .Please try to keep whole conversation in one question/thread to speed up resolution. Thank you.

Hi Rajarajan.

Thanks, but the answer to my question is NOT there, just more gump and wishy washy comments from your cusomer support and more people having the problem which is not resolved.

This:

Does not work for me.

Hello fellow AVG sufferers (those who remain)...

"I was getting weary of this nag too.  Yesterday, I rolled up my sleeves and found a link that was described as the "real" download page for AVG Free.  Here's that link:
http://www.avg.com/ww-en/download.prd-afh-free
"

Thank you, Marj, you saved me!

On 27Feb2016...
I uninstalled AVG (and 'AVG Zen' whatevertheheckthatis).
I ran Ccleaner (very useful utility I've used for years) to clear out garbage (lots of) from Windows registry
I reinstalled AVG from http://www.avg.com/ww-en/download.prd-afh-free

... and ever since then, I've not been bothered by this stupid 'unstoppable' (according to the 'support' folk here) malware-lookalike popup advert.

And though this forum software here fought me tooth and nail, I eventually managed to log back in to give thanks, and kudos, to you, Marj, and to offer my testimony that this solution actually works!

See you all next time around the loop, I guess...

John Smith,
Thanks so much for taking the time to share this with fellow "forever AVG users".  I too have recommended this product and/or installed it to countless friends and families computers.  I went to the page you posted to reinstall AVG and wondered if you would provide clarification.  There are several different products to choose from on that page and wondered which one should we download?  I may be the first to ask you this question but can guarantee I probably won't be the last.  Just to show what I am talking about (and before someone asks for a screen shot)  User-added image
Thanks so much for all your help and hats off to those that are keeping a copy of this thread (I am as well).  When and if someone has to take action against this please feel free to contact me.  Have a wonderful day and thanks again for sharing the answer that AVG could have provided in 10 seconds but chose not to ~  bad bad marketing plan AVG.

@Jen Hutchison-Schoonover ... Hi :)

The file I downloaded and installed from that page was: AVG_Antivirus_Free_x64_693.exe

I did this because the operating system I'm working with is 64-bit windows.
If you have Windows but not 64-bit Windows then you want the 32-bit version.
If you don't have MS-Windows then I apologise for my lack of nouse, but you will need to ask someone else...

... and I think I understand where you're coming from: the only ones at whom we can point the finger of blame are Those Who Hawk Computer Operating Systems While Persuading Us That They're Quote Easy To Use Unquote.

This post was offered with all good intentions in the effort to assist the global community, though I do recognise that it probably comes across poorly. I console myself with the thought that it can't possibly be interpreted as poorly as those 'offerings' made by staff in the employ of AVG Technologies (for whom I do, nevertheless, maintain deepest sympathy, because in this bizarre society of ours, we all need to try to keep 'jobs' to pay the bills, no matter how nonsensical our day-to-day lives may become as a result).

AVG... What a load of crap, your upgraded software actually violated GOOGLE addon security and breached their search API and all your customer support does is say "WE ARE SORRY"... Do something about it FFS, stop saying you are sorry, thousands of people are complaining and by you putting these popups on the system all you are doing is targeting dumb old people who click on it thinking their computer is at risk and MUST upgrade, which is illegal. I have passed on this information to not only Microsoft for breaching their Notification security Action Centre settings but also passed it onto the Online Intelligence Agency, SIIA IP Protection Agency, Microsoft Software Privacy Violation Team, Australian Federal Police for Online Fraud and Scamming people into upgrading software where it is not needed, BSA Software Enforcement Agency and the AIC. Remove this popup or face the consequences AVG!!! What you are doing is ILLEGAL!!!! Yes It is Illegal, ask your legal team, it does not HELP customers in informing them to upgrade, it is a violation of privacy and invasive, a breach of Microsoft Protocols and targeting the vulnerable. Remove it or else!!!

I too am a long time AVG Free user. I have not used anything else like ever. I have noticed these pop-ups as well. I am an IT Tech for a small Tech company server Pesonal and Small Bussiness. I have ALWAYS Installed AVG Free on all my clients PC unless it conflicted with something which is rare. It has ALWAYS removed and stop virus and infections. but over the past like 2 years now they have had their "Upgrade to the Full Version" which is really a Trial or when clients upgrade an existing free version they get the Full Trial selected by default and I always have to walk them though remove it. Now I have noticed that people are having issues reverting BACK to the free version after click on this same pop-up! I have to uninstall AVG and then full reinstall it. I also use the offline installers which do not install the AVG Zen (Which sounded like a dream come true at first to be able to remotely monitor clients PC's but nope). I have all the pop-ups disabled and still get this and like many of the other free users here I think I will be looking for another antivirus software soon here as it is wasting my time and costing my clients money (even though I always tell them to just exit out of anything AVG). It is sad that after over 10 years I'm moving away. I must have AVG Installed on easily over a 1000's PC's, now I won't be able to do all of them but as i visit them AVG will be uninstalled and something new replaced with it.

Go Goodbye AVG. If you decied to remove your so called "Bussines campagin" forever on the free version of add a "Decline" and we aren't bugged again, then maybe I'll come back until then good luck with your "Bussiness Camagin"

Also this happens even without the AVG Zen. It seems like on new installs it won't show up for a while but then comes after a week or so.

Wow, I finally got tired of clicking "No Thanks" to the repetitive popup from AVG and thought I would take some time to see what is being said about this issue.  Little did I realize.  I just spent the last 15 minutes or so reading through this thread and the other linked posts on this subject.  Has this really been complained about since August of last year?  We are seven months into this issue and all AVG can really say is we will look into it?  Lets face it, this is not rocket science.  If seven months and multiple complaints have passed and this is still an issue, then it seems to me AVG is not inclined to "fix" anything.  It would be more accurate to say, "this is working as intended".  I don't mean to be a glass-is-half-empty kind of guy.  But I also am not buying the party-line of....we care we'll look into it.  Even though I am retired, I have better things to do with my time than try to find work-arounds for something that was intended to be a nuisance from the beginning.  As Steve Rainbird stated above, about Aravind Gnanamurthy's post on Feb 23, I think there is a bigger issue here.  This is either an ESL issue, or intentional obfuscation.  Neither of which are appropriate for a customer service representative.

Hello Darrell,

We apologize for the inconvenience caused.
We can understand that you are speaking about the campaign popups of AVG which was discussed in this thread earlier.
We have explained the reason for this and we have asked our customers to submit the feedback and many of our customers have submitted their feedback regarding this popup.
It is our AVG Marketing team should take necessary action and we can't assure whether this would get implemented because it is our only way for marketing.
Right now we can only ask our customers to ignore our campaign popups.
Thank you.
James HJames H

I also have the same popup as the others in this thread (see below)

And whilst this is annoying, I could perhaps have put up with it if it only occured on start-up, or when full screen applications weren't running.

As it is, this and other AVG pop-ups occur when in full-screen applications which steals the focus (and depending on the nature of the application, sometimes minimises the legitimate program)

I understand that you need to advertise your products to provide a free version, but the inconvenience of being pulled out of a movie or game is infuriating!

If a solution is not found soon you will lose yet another customer in me. You will also lose my parents, brothers and friends who downloaded AVG on my recommendation (and in the case of my parents, two  full installations!)

I suspect your marketing campaign has been a great success for your competitors.

Hello all 'used to be happy' AVG'ers
Just as sad as all the rest of you posting in this string and all other strings concerning the popups
now added to the free avg i will put this antivirus software to rest (R.I.P) it was really good once upon a time! My focus will shift to AVIRA and see where it leds me. Having worked in the IT business since 1980 and on two worldwide computer hw/sw companies aswell as worldwide companies on the client-side, looking at the shifting over to third-party deliveries/outsourcing i am now convinced that the sloope down for AVG has just started. The repeating answers only strenghtens my opinion that this behaviour towards the clients will not change, atleast not until it's too late. bye from sweden

unfortunately, you did not handle this good enough, AVG team,
after waiting for over a month for a solution, I am now too tired of dismissing that annoying popup message.
I used to recommend all my friends and family to install AVG. some of them bought the premium versions.
this will no longer be the case. as of this moment I have clicked the "No Thanks" for the last time.
I am uninstalling AVG and replacing it with Avira antivirus, and will make sure everyone I know do the same.
too bad that after SO many forum posts, some from people that really needed to make an effort to even sign up to your website (the elder people), you failed listen to the customers that make your company what it is, and failed to fix this horrible issue.

Reading this filles me with so little hope. If your main goal really is to keep your customers happy, you'd have either disabled the popup or at least put it on a decent time frame, eg. once a fortnight or once a month...

I do not need any standard comment about your "regret" for my inconvienience or any empty apologies about avg not meeting my expectations. I just need you to fix this problem that'll keep pushing people to your competitors.
The very best advertisement you can get is "word of mouth" and the very worst advertisement is allso from "word of mouth", if you do not understand what "word of mouth" i'd suggest you'd look it up.

Same as everyone-else here, the marketing malware is meaning I too am going. I have used AVG for years and it has been great - thank you for those years. Recent changes such as the highly aggressive AVG search hijacking browser settings and now the non-sop malware which is exactly the type of thing I want protection against have made my mind up. Avira is now getting an extra customer. I find the method of marketing the paid version particularly unsavoury with "security is incomplete" messages and no info as to what you are asked to download. This is the behavior of people that I want stopped by a security program not promoted by one. As this has gone on for so long without the faintest sign of remorse I can only conclude it is more likely to get worse than better. Like many others here I have recommended AVG to many others who have sought and valued my advice. No longer. The tech unsavy will be suckered by such messages and I won't be part of it.

To illustrate my point a neighbour brought her laptop to me saying AVG had stopped. She had accidentally clicked to accept the trial having no desire to use the full version and having no idea what she was doing. I had previously told her AVG was trustworthy so she followed that advise to it's conclusion and followed the link. The marketing strategy is aimed squarely at people like her. I can not in all conscience issue that advise again.

To the techs who have replied on this thread - I accept that you probably have no input into marketing strategy and are simply towing the company line here whilst earning a living. I have left my feedback, not that I expect it to make any difference in the same way that previous feedback of others has not. Even if it does make a difference the damage is done and the reputation lost.

Thank-you for the good years and goodbye.

I tried reading all comments posted here but after 10-20 same patronizing answers from avg staff i just got pissed to the point of uninstalling AVG after at least 16 years of using it. Lost patience to go through all comments since I see ALL customers are saying same, exact same thing, and staff is... beyond annoying, patronizing, constantly asking for screenshots even tho they have peen provided in post just ABOVE theirs, avoiding to ask simple questions, repeating same things no one is interested in over and over again  so.... pointless and meaningless and in the end - we are wasting out time on what?

I dont need any copy/paste answer staff has been posting for months or who knows how long, I ONLY logged in to say - DONE.
Gonna be Avast or whatever... just not avg. Never again avg.

Thank you and bye.

it seems from the same useless replies, and from the "march madness" NEW intrusive campaign, that they prefer a situation, where a lot of free, and some premium customers leave, if it brings them a few premium customers that are just sick of these ads.
they just don't know that using such intrusive and nagging ads just keeps customers away from them, since they are not the only free AV out there.

I am already a week with Avira and it's all good until now.

Hi All

Since the 'Gurus' dont want to help, try this.
Go to AVG User Interface, Options, Advanced settings, Appearance and untick all items under 'Display System Tray Notifications' then reboot and its gone. Not sure if its going to pop up again yet.
