Avg icon missing form system tray notification area

Since the Sept 17/18 Windows update for Windows 10 1607, the AVG icon has bee missing from the notification area of my computers (3).  I ran remove AVG and reinstalled AVG Protection, and it appeared again, and stayed for 24 hr, even after restarts..  But this morning (Sept 21) it is missing again on all three computers.  AVG updated last night, so I tend to think it is an AVG problem.  Help.

I always liked having it present, that way i can see if there are any problems with AVG.  For example the excamation mark in the icon let me know there is a problem.  Now there is nothing.  I wish it was back!

Hello James,

I am having the same issue, no tray icon. Am using AVG Zen. 10101.240207, AVG Internet Security 16.121.7859.

My notebook which has AVG Free has also lost its system tray icon since a day or so ago. Since the last update where AVG has changed the system tray menu things have gone downhill - please revert back to the old system tray icon and menu, and of course fix this issue. In the meantime, I have pinned the desktop shortcut menu for AVG onto my Taskbar...

Hello Phillip,

I am having the same problem as of an hour ago. I look in the task manager and see all the AVG modules are running, but there is no AVG icon in the notification area. This started when I received a  Windows 10 notice that I had no virus protection or firewall running. I clicked on the AVG icon and saw that an update had failed. I reinstalled AVG as suggested, now there is no icon. The icon reassures me that I am protected and it is the user interface. How can I force an update check if there is no icon in the notification area.

I am running Windows 10 1607 and AVG Internet Security 2016. This also happened on one of my laptops that is running Windows 10 Home and AVG Internet Security 2016.

Why exactly should we all have to do that lengthy 7 step process of reinstall when AVG should just be fixing their mistake?  I've got paid PRO AVG and it's the same problem.  Also why do you guys just ask for a screenshot from everyone on this?  Just assume the icon is gone (for TONS of people) and go talk to your programmers.  Jeez.
KishoreKishore (Avast)
Hello Burr,
We do understand your concern. Please be informed that it is a temporary fix to install the latest version of the AVG program. However our developers are working on the issue with high priority and fix it as soon as possible.
Thank you.

I have tried to repair AVG as stated in the  reply to Phillip, this did not help or do anything.
Then tried using your removal tool (Ran it Twice) and reinstalling still no sucess.
Awaiting further advice.

AVG Missing icon
AVG protection icon is missing, this is painful because when you right click the icon the pop up has quick acces for defintion updating and starting, pausing, stopping, scans.
As you can see in the windows setting (select which icons appear on the taskbar) AVG protection is turned on but not showing. The other AVG user inface (which is turned off) is for Zen.
I hope this is helpful

This may be related to the Win10 and/or current AVG version problem above.

PC with Win7 Pro and AVG Free. At about the same time frame as above, the AVG icon with the arrow that shows an active scan no longer appears in the taskbar. Notifications in AVG are checked off correctly and as well the taskbar notification controls are set such that this icon should appear on a scan.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hello Mark,

Sorry, we couldn't understand your exact concern with AVG.
Could you be more specific on the scan of AVG and also the icon that you are referring to so that we can assist you better?

I'm having the same issue. I'm running Windows7 on 2 desktop PCs. One has Internet Security 2015 and has the icon, the other has Internet Security 2016 and the icon is missing. Task manager shows that AVG is running and when I run the desktop shortcut it shows that I am protected. I have the paid version on both computers. Please fix this, having the system tray icon lets me know I'm protected and lets me know when the database in being updated.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Thank you for the information, Mark.
Do you mean that you don't have the AVG System Tray icon anymore?
Mark ButtonMark Button
Correct. The System Tray Icon is missing on my 2016 Internet Security computer. The computer running the 2015 Internet Security is OK. Both have paid version of the software.
I also have another computer running Windows 7 and the free version of  AVG, and that one is OK as well.

I got the same Problem. The Tray Icon was missing. First I tried to clean my tray-cache. After that I tried to repair my Installation. The Tray went back for a time and now it is missing again. Strange thing: A cold start brings no icon, when I restart the System (Windows 7 64Bit) the Tray Icon appears.

(Internet Security - paid Version)

Hello Frank,
We are sorry to know that you have problem with AVG system tray icon. This issue can happen, if the AVG program in your computer may not be up to date. Please update AVG and check. And also make sure that you do not have any conflicting security software installed in your computer.
Thank you.

Situation really frustrating right now! I have AVG Tuneup and Internet Security Both installed on my PC, win 8.1 latest. With recent AVG Tunup Update, both AVG Tuneup and AVG Internet Security system tray icon removed from Notification Area! I have reinstalled latest AVG Internet Security and AVG Tuneup already, but this simply does not solve the case, still icon removed from system tray!

It seems avg support team reply on this forum, simply like ignorant and rather than solving this case, they just bargin with "AVG Reinstaller", "SYSTEM LOGS", "SCREENSHOTS" bla bla. But this issue happening with my 4 laptops and 7 pc on my office. So it seems finally its time to migrate some other antivirus from AVG.

I also complain about this issue from link removed and I suggest all other users who are facing same give feedback over there.

Issue:
With recent AVG Tuneup Update, all System Tray Icon removed from Windows for both AVG Internet Security and AVG Antivirus.

Fix:
First we have to remove AVG PC Tuneup from PC and we have to reinstall AVG Antivirus. And install AVG PC Tuneup from backup.

Its Happening Again:
Because AVG PC Tuneup 2016 having automated Update feature, it installed latest update automatically and its happening again. With the update all System Tray Icon removed for Both AVG Internet Security and AVG PC Tune up.

Interesting Note:
If you open AVG Tuneup Software, you will be amazed that System tray icon for both Internet Security and AVG PC Tuneup again visible. And it will remain visible until windows restart. After restart, again gone. If Tuneup Software opened, again visible.

What Support Team actually do?
They just replying ignorantly, rather than escalate it with Senion Technician. May be they are unable to identify this issue. Or they simply not friendly with customer support rather than making some sales! Even ESET solve bugs in less than 24 hours when identified.

Look what I found on this form for this support reply:
1. "Please do not worry, eventhough the AVG icon is not displayed in system tray your computer will be protected." - YES, So you tell me its a bug and its okay without solving!?

2. "our developers are working on the issue with high priority and fix it as soon as possible." - OCT 22, 2016. Oh its Nov 6, 2016 today. So it seems you are not able to fix it rather than messing up?

3. "We apologize for the inconvenience. We suggest you to repair avgclick.me/RepairAVGyour AVG program, restart your device and check for the issue." - Nov 1, 2016 - Ok so you want to tell your team solve this case after OCT 22 and you want us to reinstall with latest version? But it does not fix this issue yet as of Nov 6, 2016. Where is the fix!?

4. "We are sorry to know that you have problem with AVG system tray icon. This issue can happen" - Nov 3, 2016. Really!? After reading above replies, I simply want to say these team are jerk and out of brain. May be they need to simply close their antivirus business. Its a security software, not peanuts software. Any bug needs to be fixed immidiately once identifed and you people are so stupid to fix anything.

I have AVG Free and did a repair (vista).  The icon came back on my system tray-hope it stays there.

There was an emergency update, that AVG ran on October 19, 2016, at 2:48pm. File size 489 KB. It's listed under Program files, AVG/Av/Notifications. If you've done a restart after that, seems like any type, the AVG system tray icon will disappear, even with all proper display options checked. I refuse to spend my valuable time, removing, re-downloading, re-installing, etc., etc. All signs point to that AVG "emergency update", whatever THAT is...???? Please let us frustrated, paying customers know, when another update will be available to fix this annoying & stupid bug. Thank you.

Hello Vicki,

Yes, due to an AVG update this issue has occurred and to fix the issue we request to perform the "Repair" of AVG program once.

When are you people (from so called AVG technologies) will realize that none of your suggested solutions actually work?  @Balasubramanian - get in touch with some senior technician and truly work on the issue rather than posting ignorant messages like "perform the "Repair" of AVG program once".

I'm sorry to say that one never gets a straightforward solution from the AVG support team. They always ask us to provide them with things that are completely irrelevant to the issue we ask them to resolve (just wasting our time!)

The current icon issue was resolved a long time ago by an ordinary user (with name of Kilden) elsewhere, not an AVG support member. Here is what he wrote and it fixed the problem for me:

CLEARING THE TRAY ICON HISTORY
run 'regedit.exe'
goto key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \TrayNotify'
delete keys 'IconStreams' & 'PastIconsStream'
start task manager, go to processes and kill explorer.exe
go to applications in the task manager, hit new task and type 'explorer.exe'
explorer will now reboot and your icons should return.

Best regards

Has this "next AVG update" been released yet? I ask this because I've been suffering with this tray icon problem for over a month and yesterday the icon began to work (sort of) but today it no longer responds to a right click or shows when AVG is updating.

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Balasubramanian,
I have tried everything in this set of post - note i started it, nothing works. As late as 11/23  I used remover, deleted all the avg files, downloaded the newest AVG_Antivirus_Free_x64_693. Reinstalled.  It worked through reatart, and first update, but within 24 hr it was missing again.  I have even done the registery fix mentioned above, Nothing work,  Today I done the repair.  Nothing.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Thank you for the detailed information.
We appreciate your efforts.
You were using the paid version of AVG Protection Multidevice that got expired on 13th October 2016, am I right?

Great news, the avg notification icon misteriously reappeared on my computer today, after being gone for a month and a half.  I did nothing new since Nov 25, it just started working with the latest updates from avg.  imagine that!

So glad to hear that the new AVG update has fixed the issue. Feel free to let us know if you require any further assistance.

AVG: don't pretend this is not a common problem or a problem you have resolved.  I maintain dozens of computers for many friends. Your problem has been going on for months.  The missing icon issue only applies to AVG.  All of the Windows 10 insallation suffer from the problem addressed in this thread.  The repair process has never worked for me.  The only cure has been to use the AVG uninstall utility and then completely reinstall AVG.  AVG needs to fix their problem and stop giving excuses!
Now, I have three AVG installations to fix.
KishoreKishore (Avast)
Hello Alan,
We do understand your concern. Our developers are working with high priority in improving the user experience. We will make sure that these kinds of issues will not reappear on our future updates.
Thank you.
Alan AnackiAlan Anacki
Mohamed Othman wrote of a procedure that worked for him.  It does not work for me.  My consistantly problematic computers are Windows 10 64 bit installations. Four AVG missing iconss and counting within the last couple of days.  It seems that the AVG issue is the result of some Windows  (cumulative?) updates.

Also, the problem is not just a missing tray icon.  The AVG shortcut on the desktop does not work. The short cut is to "C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\Framework\Common\avguix.exe" /zen.open_ui” The functionality of the AVG program is compromised.  Are we supposed that the antivirus protection is working correctly?

Now, I am going to run the AVG removal tool.  It is pathetic that I have to have it saved so that I don't have to find and download it again.  Maybe, one of these times, I will use a program other than AVG.

Hello Alan,
Please accept our unreserved and sincere apologizes. As we said earlier, we have escalated this issue to our devolpers and they are working ahrd to fix the issue. Last night I completely uninstalled AVG Internet Security, AVG Zen, and ran AVG Remover and restarted the computer.  I then reinstalled AVG Internet Security.  Still missing the AVG IS icon.  I filed a bug report (#351849) for this issue on November 3, but the Status remains "UNCONFIRMED".  As a Beta tester, I can send low-level debug logs of AVG from the UI if it will help, just ask for them.

I suppose the enevitable internal termoil brought about by AVAST's acquisition of AVG isn't helping this issue be resolved any quicker...
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Sam, we understand your concern.
We have escalated your case to our senior team to get suggestion.
Once we get a suggestion will post it here.
Your patience is much appreciated.

Well, I have patiently waited an entire additional month, and the issue is still not fixed.  My bug report is also still classified as "UNCONFIRMED".  According to the original post, the problem with the AVG Tray Icon has now been an issue for three months, and I have yet to see any real progress or updates.  Disappointing...
Mimi SernaMimi Serna
I have the same problem ... and have had it for several months. I use Windows 10. I want for an icon to show when AVG is running ... seems like a simple request but no one seems to be able to answer the issue except to say, 'thanks for letting us know, we'll look into it!"  Is it that complicated?

Hello Mimi,

I understand your situation, I would request you to reinstall AVG program to fix the issue. Please follow
the steps in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product to reinstall AVG Internet Security by running AVG Remover and AVG Clear tool. If the issue persists, please contact us to escalate the case.

I see this has been going on for a year now (Oct 2016 to Oct 2017). I have had AVG for years, and suddenly the icon disappears. So, I guess "I" have to do the work and uninstall, reboot, install, reboot. Does anyone know if McAfee or Norton have these problems? I am willing to look into them since it has been over a YEAR and the issue remains. My faith in your product is lacking. I know, I am a disgruntled customer. Just a small issue in the other issues your company deals with everyday. I will say that at home I use the free version, but at work, our Corporation has purchased the business edition and the icon remains. Odd...still there for the paid business, but gone for the free. As the Deputy Director of our company, I am not sure AVG is for us anymore. A year? Seriously? REALLY? *shakes head* Shame on you AVG. Ok, thank you for allowing me to vent...I am now ready for your apologetic repsonse and the link for the AVG uninstaller.
