Opera built in VPN conflict

I am using Opera web browser and it has built in VPN. When AVG is active the VPN will not connect. I tried to add an exception "C:\Program Files\Opera\*" but it has no effect. using the most recent version of AVG and I don't see an option to disable firewall. Any way stop this conflict?

Hello Joshua,

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Are you using the AVG 2017 version?
If it is the 2017 version, you do have option to disable Firewall as it was in 2016 but the settings and way are different.
Please open the AVG Free Antivirus interface, at the top click on "Menu" click on "Settings"
To the left click on components, to the right scroll down to Firewall.
You can find a green cursor, please move it to the left and click on Yes to disable it.

Hi Joshua,

I created an account just to answer your question. I was having the same exact problem, and I found the solution. Feel free to try it.

1. Open AVG and go to Antivirus Free.
2. Click on "Menu" then "Settings."
3. On the left, click "Components."
4. Click on "Customize" next to Online Shield.
5. On the left, click "Exceptions."
6. Add *.operavpn.com* to URLs to exclude
7. Click OK.
8. Check to see if Opera VPN is working.

Let me know if this helps, it worked on my end!

Any other ideas?  Adding URL exclusion *.operavpn.com* hasn't worked for me.  Opera VPN worked fine until the AVG upgrade.

Opera VPN worked with AVG until this past week's AVG update.

Now, Opera VPN is not connecting even after trying the above suggestions.  Any other ideas?

My suggestion to AVG:  please incorporate Opera VPN as an AVG setting option.

Unless this problem is resolved, I will uninstall AVG and switch to another virus program.

Hello Joshua,
Thank you for the information. We suggest you to  Download and run AVG Clear tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe. This tool will help with removing antivirus component of AVG 2017 and its traces.

Open tool
User Account control - click "Yes"
Windows safe mode - click "No" (we cannot recommend use the tool in safe mode, because there is a problem with compability)
Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)
Click "Uninstall"
Click "Restart computer"

Once you reboot your computer, please click the link to download your AVG Product http://www.avg.com/us-en/download.

Thank you.

I have the same issue. So has this been resolved or is it just hanging out there? It's a month later.

I added the *.operavpn.com* to exclusions as suggested in Michael P's (3rd) post and it worked after I turned off AVG and turned it back on. I am copying his instructions here and adding those steps for clarity.

Thanks Michael P for the solution. I hope you don't mind me adding to it.

7. Click OK.
8. Right-click AVG icon in the system tray and toggle the switch to Off for Protection.
9. Right-click AVG icon in the system tray and toggle the switch to On for Protection.
10. Check to see if Opera VPN is working.

I'm guessing I am giving up protections for anything I browse using the Opera VPN so be aware that may be the case if you choose to use this solution. Hopefully AVG will solve this problem and make it unnecessary to make that choice to use the VPN.

Could you confirm once if your issue has been resolved?

Thank you!

I tried all the other fixes but found this fix on this website: https://www.reddit.com/r/operabrowser/comments/687yza/vpn_stuck_on_connecting_forever/
Give it a go  !!!!

I use the SurfEasy addon now, which is the same VPN provider used by Opera bult in VPN.
