Update has detected running installation (Windows 10)

My AVG 2015 has started giving issues as of 8/23/15 as whenever I ran the Update now button it would come back stating: Update failed, Update has detected running installation. Complete that installation before starting update.  From what I have noticed that the windows installer in my current OS (Windows 10 Pro) is currently greyed out and is currently set to manual.  This may be an issue in the registry itself but I have yet to figure that part out.  Any help on this manner would be appreciated as it is affecting installing/uninstalling other programs as well.

I just had to go to the Task Manager  ->  Process tab and delete the "Windows Installer" manually, after that the AVG updated normally, I didn't need to re-install.

I had just the same problem - I thought initially that this was a Win 10 problem, until I found this page. Uninstall/reinstall worked fine.

Shouldn't happen though, should it? My time wasted, etc ...

I had the identical issue with my paid-for version of AntiVirus as did Richard Hess, and it was making me crazy until I Googled and found this solution, which was successful.  Kishore, thank you very much for your assistance with this matter....

The same thing is happening to me, and when I try to update some Adobe software, I get the error that says an installer is currently running, even though nothing is running. This seems to be a Windows 10 Issue. Has AVG learned anything about this?

Hello Richard. I have checked and can see that this is not an issue with AVG, In this case I kindly request you to contact windows for further assistance. Thank you.

I just encountered the same "update has detected running installation" error today. I tried the solution suggested by Joyson but it did not make any difference. I found that Pablo's solution above (delete Windows installer in Task Manager) solved the problem.

Hi, I have the same problem (using W10)  and removed and reinstalled AVG with the Remover and still same error message. I don't see the Windows Installer in the Task Manager. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

I would just like to point out that completely uninstalling antivirus software is a risky game to play IMO.

Some viruses can block your software from updating and subsequently allow newer malware to come in under the radar. I am always very suspicious of uninstalling my AV software and would never recomend this unless absolutely confident there is nothing dodgy going on in the background. Once your software is uninstalled anything can happen, including the virus making it seem as though your AV software has succesfully been re-installed.

Hello Suresh,

I understand the inconvenience. After installing AVG, it shouldn't happen. Are you using AVG trial or Paid version? May I know the Operating system installed on your Desktop?

Hi Navi,

We will help you with this.
May I know the version of AVG program installed on your PC? To check the version, open AVG AntiVirus free/AVG Internet Security > Menu > About.
Share the screenshot (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlName=AVG-Create-screenshot&supportType=home) of the update failure message and you can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on "Answer" & then click on the "Image" [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.
