Host unreachable for AVG Update

Hi, Updated to 18.6.3066 and now have a problem with "Host Unreachable" for Definitions updates. There used to be a list of AVG components for the previous versions that showed which needed internet access for updates, etc.

[quote]If you are using a third party firewall or software that checks network traffic, it is necessary to allow communication for the following processes to ensure correct AVG functionality:
  • avgcsrvx.exe (32bit) / avgcsrva.exe (64bit)
  • avgdumpx.exe (32bit) / avgdumpa.exe (64bit)
  • avgemcx.exe (32bit) / avgemca.exe (64bit)

Anything similar for the current system?

Incidentally I had a problem with email programs working with this upgrade but this was solved by going in and removing all the ports under Troubleshooting.

Cheers, thanks for any info

Hi Victor,

We will help you to get this issue resolved.

We request you to configure the firewall settings on the latest version of AVG Internet Security and check with the process.

Please follow the below instructions to configure the firewall on AVG Internet Security application.

Open AVG Internet Security -> Menu at the top right -> Settings -> Components -> firewall -> customize -> system rules -> make sure all the task has been enabled.

Again, Firewall -> Customize -> Network Profiles -> change all the profiles from public to Private.

And check with the issue.

Thanks,
Vishnu Vardan

Hello Vishnu

I don't have a Firewall component in AVG Free. Below is a screen shot of my components:-My AVG Components

I switch off my Firewall and try to update, it sits on DNS Resovling for a while and then shows Hostr Unreachable.

Host Unreachable

Any Info would be appreciated.

Hello

Are the Virus definitions downloaded through AVGSvc.exe because TCP View is showing some data being downloaded, over 12M up to now?

Just downloaded

Console screen still shows Virus Definitions as out of date.

Thanks for any help

Alright, thank you for providing us the screenshot.

We suggest to use our AVG clear and remover tool by referring to this article to remove the AVG Antivirus Free and its traces, then reinstall the AVG Antivirus Free application by following the instructions given in this article and check with the update issue.

If the issue still persists even after following the above steps then please let us know to proceed further.

Well that's some hours of my time and some of my bandwidth that I'll never see again. The Remover couldn't see an AGV instalation that was running but I ran it anyway The cleaner seemed to do something. I then tried to run the AVG Free Installer a couple of times but it kept telling me that some necessary files weren't available on YOUR server, some garbage about resetting values and trying again. This all started because your Host was Unreachable, has your server been the problem all along??? You used to have an offline version of AVG Free Installer, is there still one available?
Alok KumarAlok Kumar (Avast)
Victor,
I really appreciate your effort in trying to resolve this issue. Yes, we still have offline installer for AVG Antivirus Free.
Before that, please follow the below instruction:
Please run the AVG Clear tool again, click NO (if it's ask you to reboot the computer in safe mode) > check the box "Uninstall AVG Zen" and click Uninstall.
Reboot your computer once and try to install AVG Antivirus Free by using below offline installer:
For Windows 64 bits computer: https://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/Antivirus_Free_x64_1818.exe
For Windows 32 bits computer:  https://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/Antivirus_Free_x86_1819.exe

If the issue still persists, please share a screenshot of the error message to proceed further.
You can post the screenshot here on your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.
Regards,
Alok.

After some more hours and bandwidth, I was able to install AVG using the Offline installer. The online installer, prior to this, seemed stuck in a loop and kept downloading up to 3/4 of the installation and restarting. I had to physically switch off the modem. It seems to have stopped now.

Good news and bad news, good news - the email system now allows emails through with port entries, bad news - the Host Unreachable error is still there after reinstallation and with firewalls turned off.:-

The two above show both Definitions and Program updates are Host Unreachable. The next screen cap show TCPView in the background showing connections with AVG components.

Is there a particular program to concentrate on that does the actual updating??

Thanks for any info.

Thank you for updating the status.
Let us try updating Google DNS and try updating AVG Antivirus free.
1. Press Windows and R keys simultaneously to open Run command.
2. Then type "ncpa.cpl" without the quotes and click on OK button.
3. In Network connections window, please right-click the connection you use, and select Properties.
4. Double-click the Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4) item on the Networking tab.
5. Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and remove them from this window. Click OK.
6) Select "Use the following DNS server addresses" and enter below mentioned numbers:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4.
7) Click on Apply and Ok.
Try updating AVG antivirus free and inform the status here.

Hello Artur,

Let's work together to fix it. Do you have AVG 18.6? Have you tried with uninstalling and reinstalling AVG products to check if it helps?

EH BeatonEH Beaton
I have same problem with AVG Free as well. been like this since last major update.

Problem fixed.

Using third part software (Zemana Anti Malware) I remove few proxy problems (127.0.0.0 etc.). Now updates works like a charm. I'm using fresh (today download) AVG Internet Seciurity.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Artur, glad to know that your issue has been resolved.
For AVG update issue, we have to try entering Google DNS and then perform the update AVG which will fix the problem.
If you would like to know on how to perform it, refer below mentioned steps:
1. Press Windows and R keys simultaneously to open Run command.
2. In Run window, type "ncpa.cpl" without the quotes and click on OK button.
If you have third party antivirus installed along with AVG Internet Security, do remove it as both will conflict.
Thanks.

Provide the screenshot of "Use the following DNS server addresses" window after entering the value.
This will help us to identify whether you are entering the numbers correctly.
You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

This worked for me:  from the Update window in AVG, scroll down to "Proxy Settings" and Click the button for "Direct Connection (no proxy)" then AVG will update!

Glad to hear that!
