uses up a lot of processing power

For some reason, AVG tends to use up between 50 and 75% of my computer's processing power, at least according to Task Manager, which rates AVG's CPU use at around that average.  This is when I'm not having AVG scan my computer or even do anything at all.  My computer starts out fine, with AVG using maybe 10-15% of the processing power.  But after an hour or so, AVG is using up the vast majority.  I can't figure out why or how to fix this, and my computer won't allow me to close AVG to free up resources.  Has anyone else had this problem?  And if so, can someone recommend a solution?

Hello Adam,

This isn't the expected behavior. Let us work together and resolve this.
There are chances for the old version running along with the latest version which should be the reason for this high CPU usage.
Hence, we request you to refer this http://avgread.me/1DEtNP0 article and get see whether you could see multiple instances of AVG like "AVG Protection" "AVG Antivirus Free".
If that is the case, uninstall the AVG program one by one.
Run AVG clear followed by remover tool as mentioned here which will remove the traces.
NOTE: If there are no AVG program found, click on "run anyway" to proceed with the removal.
If you are using the free version, refer this https://goo.gl/LYUXfg article to install it.
Keep us informed about the status.

About 15 minutes after I posted this, things went back to normal.  I'll keep this in mind if it creates problems in the future, though.
