Meltdown and Spectre

As most will be aware 2018 has brought us a nice security flaw with our CPU's.

https://meltdownattack.com/

Microsoft have released patches.  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4072698/windows-server-guidance-to-protect-against-the-speculative-execution-s

However it does not currently roll out to AVG users, due to incompatibility.  There is a  risk of blue screens/non booting of the system.

AVG support are aware of the issue, and requested we check the forums for a update.   Hopefully this thread will be updated when there is news.

Hi, not sure why my message has disappeared yesterday - but writing again: AVG 2017 is compatible with the update since December 2017 (by driver update) and is storing the required keys into the registry since Jan 3rd 2018.

Thanks a lot,
Lukas.

OK, It's later the same day.  Do you guys have detection / cure for MELTDOWN & SPECTRE yet?
Let me explain why I say that.  I've been using AVG for over 20 years.  Once upon a time I got a virus that neither Norton, nor McAfee could even DETECT.  So, I went online, downloaded the free version of AVG.  AVG not only knew about it & detected it, IT CURED IT TOO!  I have been an advocate for them ever since.  When I worked on the Compaq & Windows helpdesks, I recommended them, by name, hundreds of times.
[No, I didn't load BOTH Norton AND McAfee at startup - EVER]
Oh, and If this sounds like an advertisement, it isn't.  But I do have a degree in advertising.

Hello,
We are aware of the new windows update (Meltdown/spectre) and checking it with our developers. Once we receive an update, will post it here.
Best regards,
Alok.

How do you not have an official response to a major flaw that effects all of your users?  Customers have to search and search to find this obscure post about it?  All your comptitors have a released a staement or an update.  I guess I need to fill out the support request form to get any information sicne IM a paying business customer?   You would think AVG would be all over this?  This is the speardsheet from MS devolper about AV programs updating to comply with new patch. This issue came to light two days ago. AVG still has no official statement about it.....    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/184wcDt9I9TUNFFbsAVLpzAtckQxYiuirADzf3cL42FQ/htmlview?sle=true#gid=0

Well, I am sorry to say, but despite all your claims apparently it is not solved. As I described in other thread, the required key is not present in registry and Microsoft doesn't list AVG as compatible with the meltdown patch so far and will not install patch on windows machines using AVG antivirus.

As a paying customer, I urge you to solve this asap. I am also very disappointed by the lack of official statement from AVG about the status of this issue and have to dig through the forum to find any related information.

Thank you.

This helped me.... I contacted AVG about 2 machines I have...one got the regkey upon an AVG update and reboot. My other machine  did not and there didn't appear to be any update for AVG. I contacted, via chat, AVG support. The 2 people I chatted with seemed to be cluesless as to what the issue or the fix was. The first support person directed me to  " check for windows updates," I told him that .I get a message saying that there is no updates available  Then he told me "you need to contact microsoft".

The 2nd Tech I chatted told me That "to resolve this you can disable AVG and update your windows."

Neither solution seemed correct. I stumbled acfcros one of the forums that suggest to try and do a repair of AVG the reboot. I trried that and lo and behold after the repair reboot, the regky was installed. I was then able to get the windows update KB4056892 which address the meldown issue

Got this from AVG yesterday,  my question was regarding AVG Business.  I have checked and our machines now have the relevant registry key on them.

We have updated our Core business product to make it compatible for Microsoft Update patch.
This was corrected in AVG virus database version 4793/*.
We are currently still verifying status on older versions of the AVG antivirus, and expect to have this update published for them by the end of the week.

You can verify the version by updating the antivirus and checking the Virus Database Version under the Security Information section of Options -> About AVG.
Once that version begins with 4793 (eg. "Virus database version: 4793/15300 (1/9/2018), 1:00 AM") the registry value Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat\cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc should exist, telling Windows that the system is safe to install the Spectre/Meltdown updates to.

Finally please be informed that the support for "Business products" is not now available in this Community.
