Why Avast and AVG antivirus have become more or less the same products?

After the merger in 2016, Avast and AVG antivirus software have become more or less the same products. They both got identical results in the recent AV-Tests reports in performance and protection category. Also, they both offer a similar set of features in their 'Free' and 'Internet Security' plans.

Hello, Umair.
We've combined our engines while keeping separate products as both Avast and AVG are strong brands with different features. Both product lines now run on our Avast engine as it makes sense to run one global detection engine but it’s important to say that engine has also been enhanced with AVG capabilities.

Our approach has been to assess the technical strengths of each company and its products and cherry-pick the best pieces. You’ll see some Avast features adapted into the AVG products and vice versa but the products remain distinct, offering different approaches to securing people online so that those who have loved one of the brands can absolutely continuing using the products they are familiar with and enjoy.

Hello Umair,
As you know, Avast acquired AVG and we are using same engine with a few different features which is why the performance and protection results are identical.
Best regards,
Alok.
