0xc00000e5 app error wehn AVG is running

Hallo,

recently I updated AVG Free to 2016.7357. Now, some third party programs are crashing on start with error code 0xc00000e5 like it is shown below.

KeePass 2 with Crashes With Error 0xc00000e5
I do not get this error with KeyPass 2.31 only, but with StuxRip x64, SubTitleEdit, and some other Apps und it only happens when AVG Protection is running, All this programmes worked before without issues.

As workarround, disabling AVG Protection is working. Adding this apps to the avg scanning exceptions seems to work as well. But of course, both are not desirable solutions.

Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Best Regards

I'm sorry. I forgot to mention, I'm using Win 10 Education x64.

Hello John,
We are sorry that it might be a 'false detection' by AVG program. False detection is a situation when an antivirus program detect an ordinary, non-malicious file as if it was infected. I suggest you to report a false detection via the link http://www.avg.com/submit-sample .Thank you.
John DoeJohn Doe
As I said: it is not depending on a single program. Right now I got the same issuse on my laptop with dolby digital driver extansion of the realtek hd audio card driver and with Intel hd graphics driver configuration tool.

But fine, I'll give it a try and send in an example.

Hello John,
Yes, please 'submit' a sample using that form and our software developers will be able to identify the issue and find a resolution as soon as possible. Thank you.

2016.7441 and the issuse is still present. I'm very impressed... really...

John, we have escalated your concern to our senior level we will get back to you with a resolution. Your patience is much appreciated.

I've also run into this problem. For me its also KeePass.exe, the Launcher for Elite Dangerous: Horizons, and the Saitek Rhino X-55 configuration tools. I had recovered from this issue by restoring a backup from before AVG had updated because I thought that this was caused by something else (system corruption), but now AVG has updated itself to 2016.0.7441 and the problem is back. Since I restored from a backup from last sunday I guess that I was still running the last working AVG version at that time.

Hi,

same problem. Can't run eg.: paint.net, KWHotelPro, Intel(R) Management Engine Components, ...

HW: Dell Latitude E7440
SW: Windows 10, x64

It seems to be mainly .Net applications that seem to get hit. I'm guessing one of the subcomponents of .Net is being blocked by AVG.
Pieter-Jan KuytenPieter-Jan Kuyten
I just came back to my computer and the AVG control panel was open (I didn't open it), so I assumed that it had updated itself (though program version is still the same at 2016.0.7441).

I disabled the exception on Elite Dangerous: Horizons and tried to start the launcher and lo and behold it started without the 0xc00000e5 error.

So whatever AVG did it seems to have fixed the issue with the .Net programs.
John DoeJohn Doe
@Pieter-Jan Kuyten: I'm sorry, but I can't confirm this. I still get the error at different apps.

@John Doe: At the same time that my programs started working again I also was able to switch on Identy protection (the middle Icon in the GUI). Before this it was orange and was complaining that it needed to be fixed, but pressing the Fix button didn't do anything.

When the 0xC00000E5 problem went away for me I was also able to press the Fix button and Identity protection started working again. Maybe that being broken was what caused the 0xC00000E5 issue for me.

So,

I just had an nice remote controle session with an AVG support advisor. The answer to this problem is just to add any trouble making program to the exception list and everything is fine. In my opinion this is what makes AVG unusable. Even worse it makes AVG needless (imho).

To be clear: When your anti-virus programm is false detecting many legit programs, you AVG, did something wrong. I don't have a need for your security program when I had to make exceptions for every second programm.

And this is how the storry ends (at least for me).

It seems that I was indeed a bit hasty. I thought I had disabled all exceptions when I tested it after the update, but I've now run into another app that produces the error. It's Logitech's LogitechOptions software that came with my MX Master mouse (or at least the updater).

I'll add this to the exception list as well, seeing as AVG seems to be completely unable to fix this issue.

Pieter,
We certainly understand how disappointing this could be. Kindly submit a sample of the false detection ( http://avgclick.me/reportafalsedetection ) to analyze it. Thank you.

I've tried multiple times to upload the installer for the LogiOptions software via the link you posted above, but since the page didn't give me any feedback after the Captcha check (only a blank page) I don't know if the submissing succeeded. I didn't receive any e-mail feedback about it, so if that is normally done after a successfull submission In can only conclude it failed three times.

I don't know what you guys are doing but with the latest update the 0xc00000e5 error suddenly has started to be given by almost every application that I tried to start. Almost every program that is run on startup gives me the error now.

I even get it when I start firefox!!!!!

I'm lucky that Chrome is still able to start otherwise I wouldn't even be able to type this message to inform you about this issue.

I don't know who does quality control at your side but this latest version is so bad that the AVG tray icon isn't even able to start!

I'm seriously thinking about uninstalling AVG and trying out what Comodo has to offer as an anti-virus solution.
Pieter-Jan KuytenPieter-Jan Kuyten
Just tried to start AVGUI.exe and that one also gives me the 0xc00000e5 error. For the love of all that is reasonable what have you messed up with the latest release!
Alan BinchAlan Binch
@ Pieter-Jan Kuyten
Pieter-Jan, Latest version is now 2016.0.7496.
AVG Guru
Pieter-Jan KuytenPieter-Jan Kuyten
Do you have a download link for that version because:

1) avgui.exe doesn't run
2) the updater doesn't run
3) the version that I can download via free.avg.com is 2016.0.7163

Pieter-Jan KuytenPieter-Jan Kuyten
Oh, and most importantly: Does that version fix this issue?
Pieter-Jan KuytenPieter-Jan Kuyten
I just tried to uninstall the current version of AVG in safe mode (which Microsoft has made a pain in the ass to get into in Windows 10 x86 BTW) since I can't do anything in normal mode and that failed after a short while (I saved the log if you guys want it). Since I can't run anything, not even the AVG installer, without the 0xc00000e5 error popping up I need some method to uninstall this horror version.

Do you have a tool to do this?

Otherwise I'll have to again restore an older image of my PC, which is the absolute last thing I want to do!

AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Pieter,
We request you to run AVG remover tool to uninstall AVG. To run remover tool, please visit http://www.avg.com/tools#tba2 and click on "AVG Remover" to download the remover tool and run it on your PC. It will ask you to select which product you would like to uninstall. Please select "AVG Protection" and follow the setup instructions to uninstall AVG.
Then re install AVG.
Pieter-Jan KuytenPieter-Jan Kuyten
After running the remover tool from safe mode (it wouldn't run in normal mode, probably due to the overactive behaviour of AVG itself) it finally was able to remove AVG from my system.

I did cause me to lose my internet connection, but after figuring out that the Windows Firewall was reactivated by the remover and quickly disabling this again I was again able to access the internet (I'm using Comodo's firewall, so the Windows Firewall was interfering with that one).

Because my trust in the AVG solution is at an alltime low (first because of the long time persistence of the 0xc00000e5 error for some apps, secondly because of this clusterf*ck of an update that made the 0xc00000e5 error nearly universal), I've decided not to reinstall AVG but instead to switch on the virus protection component of Comodo.

Maybe in the future I'll give AVG protection another chance, but at the moment I don't trust it anymore.

@rajarajan
While I appreciate the offer for help I've resolved my issue by uninstalling AVG and switching to the Anti-Virus component of Comodo.

I hope for your sake (AVG's) that you find the cause of the issue and resolve it, but as I stated in my post before yours I'm done with AVG for now.
AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Pieter, sorry to hear that.

I also ran into this behavior with AVG Free on Windows 10.  After a frustrating hour of my life that I won't get back, I was able to figure out that AVG was the problem, uninstall it, and install Avast in its place.  Maybe I'll give AVG another try at some point in the future -- and maybe I won't.

Just want to add my experience here wrt this 0xc00000e5 error:

I've been a user of AVG antivirus free ed. for years. My system is win10 64bit currently. I use comodo free fire wall, and ad-aware scaner in addition to avg.

At the beginning of 2016, I remember I suddenly see lots 0e5 errors when trying to open programs(explorer, firefox, chrome, and pretty much any program). After some digging I pinpointed the cause to  be AVG. So I had to delete it and used win 10 built in defender. Today, I decided to give avg a try, to my dismay this problem is still not fixed. Now with avg real time protection on, I can't open any program. I only get error 0e5 for each program I try to open. Please take a look into this problem again and let me know what I can do to help solving it!
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hello youboring,

Sorry to know that the programs aren't working on your PC but we are sure that this should have not happened due to our AVG free antivirus program.
Are you facing issues only in opening the internet explorer, Chrome and Firefox browser or for all of the programs installed on your PC?
Have you installed our AVG PC tuneup trial version before and after the expiry uninstalled it?

As I'm typing this problem is occuring again. I can open windows file explorer, microsoft edge, which both come with win 10. I'm not able to open spotify, skype, teamviewer, irfanview etc, just to give you an idea. The only way to get around it is to temporarily disable avg real time protection, but it doesn't work anymore: i click disable protection for 10 mins, the UAC comes up ask if I want to do this. I click yes, but nothing changes on AVG panel, the green protection circle is still on, won't change to red.
This is a clean install. I even used avg remover before this installation just to be sure.

Win 10.. Presume that you have the Windows Defender, which is an AntiVirus prog.., de-activated since it can conflict with AVG?.

Windows defender only gets turned on when the system doesn't detect any anti-virus software installed.

So due to loss of remote control for some reason after restarting the computer I had 2 AVG technicians looked at my computer. They removed my existing AVG with "AVG remover", and then fresh installed it again. The 2nd technician also booted into safe mode and maybe did something there. After this restart he lost the remote session. I waited for around 5 mins and it seemed I could open apps like skype, team viewer etc., so I contact a 3rd technician(apparently who I get is random) and told him it's fixed.
Sadly shortly after closing the remote session, the problem manifested itself again. This time however I was able to further pinpoint the cause to the "identity protection" module. Actually every time when I start my computer this module is not working by default for some reason, I had to use "fix it" button to turn it on. However I noticed that if I don't bother with it. I can use any apps like usually. So while it's still a problem, it's something that I could avoid, for now.
Just want to say that I really appreciate AVG for sending real person help for a free product. If one day I'm to purchase antivirus software it'll surely be AVG :) (Once this error is gone though)

Hello youboring,
We are sorry to know that you are finding issues in accessing certain apps with 'Identity protection' enabled. To analyze the issue, we suggest you to get reconnected to our senior technicians at your own convenient time. We have also sent email with the instructions to get connected to them.  Thank you.

Just want to give an update and hopefully help others who have this issue. After today's remote session the technician mentioned that my comodo firewall might be affecting the functioning of AVG identity module, so I deleted it. Apparently it was indeed this case.
Now using windows 10 built in firewall, AVG identity protection module is enabled by default at computer start up(had to be enabled manually before when comodo firewall was installed), and no more error 0xc00000e5 when opening any apps. I'm glad this problem is finally resolved and very appreciative of AVG support!

I HATE having to join a support conversation in support of the problem.

I've been running AVG-free on a Win.10, yesterday I was notified that an update was available and I installed it.  I postponed the re-boot for several hour, when it did reboot each of the programs that Istart when Windows opens opens sent me the same message  [[The application unable to start correctly (0xc00000e5).  Click OK to close application.].  It turns out MANY of the programs I use, and have been for years, trigger the same answer.

I've added a couple to the Exception List which seems to work.

I downloaded and ran the AVG_Remover.exe removal tool but I don't think it ran.  I tried adding it to the AVG Exceptions list and got  [An error occurred while saving the configuration: HRESULT:0xc00000e5] -- looks like the execption list work-around diesn't work any more  :-(
I am going to chase the string you gave Tom Kim on July 12 then I'll be back to report in.

Hi Balasubramanian - thanks for hte quick return.

I downloaded and tried to the the AVG_Remover.exe .. I don't think it ran at all, there was no error message, but also no screen display of any kind. so I'm dead in the water on that one.

Thanks again

Hi Balasubramanian - HA! - I just got 1/2-hour more    :-)
In walking thru the directions you gave Tom, the Remove-AVG program does not run {run it as me I get the 0xc00000e5-error message, running as Admin it asks if its OK to run and then nothing happens (it is not an active program)
There is a Tech.Utilities pgm  (http://www.wiki-errors.com/wiki-errors.php?wiki=0xc00000e5) that I tried, downloaded it, tried to tun it I get the same performance as above for the AVG-Remover.
I"m flat stumped.  I don't know how I can remove AVG, I fear it will mean going back to my last System Backup--which I really don't want to do.      Any thoughts????
Thanks
Guy

Guy, we are sorry to know that you are getting an error while running the AVG remover tool.
We are sure that the issue is with the Microsoft.
Please try running another .exe file and check whether you are getting any error.
If you get any error then the issue is with the Windows files and we request you to contact the Microsoft support to get the issue fixed.
