Unable to change the Definitions Update Schedule

Hi, Can anyone help please? On the Advanced Settings / Schedules / Definitions Update Schedule, the "Run Automatically" button is permanently checked, as well as the "Run when computer starts up if task has been missed" button. This causes huge frustration when checking things last minute before school and the machine dives into update mode just when we're trying to get a quick answer. Even when I log on as an administrator, the only button I can change is the "Enable task" button at the top of the page, but obviously I don't want to turn off Sheduled updates altogether, I just want them to happen in the evening when the machine is idling. The Help Pages say I should be able to change these settings. Does anyone have any info about this please? Many thanks. Richard

That's a shame.
It must be a recent change, because it didn't use to happen... The difference between change and progress, I suppose !     (Unless they've changed the release times for the updates, of course, so I find them in the mornings now.)
Many thanks indeed for your help. I shall spend no more time fiddling with it !
All the best.
Richard.

Hi, I have also noted that it is not possible to set the Schedule for Definition Updates and it is not possible to uncheck the option to Run when computer starts.

This causes significant inconvenience when I boot up a laptop that has not been used for a few days and need to use it quickly but it becomes busy updating just when I need to use it fast.

The only work around is to disable the Definitions Updates altogether which clearly is not secure or desirable.  If many users end up doing this it creates a vulnerability for the whole community.

So my suggestion to AVG is to make it possible even for Free users to set a schedule and uncheck the option above.

This would both me more convenient for users and be more secure for the whole community.

Hello C,

Sorry to hear that. For your information in our antivirus program free, trial or paid version there is no option to disable the Updates. Since updates are highly mandatory we did't implement a disable option for it. If we do that then the user's PC will get into vulnerability. You have also said this in your statement. One more thing to be noted is the Updates cannot be scheduled on all free, trial or paid versions. The reason is because updates are to be done whenever it is available and whenever there is Internet Connectivity. This has been implemented purely for the benefits of our customers.

If you have any issues please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you.

Hello Balasubramanian,

It is indeed possible to disable the Scheduled Task that does Definition Updates (Definition Update Schedule".

Also, according to the AVG Free Help file, it should be possible to change the Definition Update Schedule from "Run Automatically" to "Schedule running".

AVG Free Help has a section in Contents, Configuring, Advanced Settings, Schedules, Update schedule that specifically states:

"If you have a specific reason to reject the automatic updates, you can do so by selecting Schedule running instead and setting up the time as required (see below). Please note that the scheduling options are limited because it is essential that the definitions are updated at least once a day."

It goes on to talk about options for Schedule Running and Advanced Scheduling Options.

It also mentions "Program Update Schedule" under Advanced settings, which I do not see under my AVG Free's Advanced Settings, Schedules section.

So something is not right.  Either the AVG Free Help is wrong, or the AVG Free program is having problems for us all.

I forgot to add the words from the AVG Free Help file regarding disabling the Scheduled Task.  It says (under the same place in Contents, Configuring, Advanced Settings, Schedules, Update schedule):

"To activate the task you are editing, make sure that the box Enable this task (on the top of the page) is checked. To deactivate the schedule, simply uncheck the box – the task will remain in the schedules overview for later use, but will not be performed.
The Name text field shows the name of the update task you are editing (the name is not editable)."

So, again, it is indeed possible to disable the Definition Updates by disabling the Definition Update Schedule task.

It is not a good idea, but it is possible.

HOWEVER, it IS a good idea to schedule when the Defintion Updates occur, or people who are on limited bandwidth connections or are on satellite connections with data limits during the day.  That is the case with me.  I have my router blocking AVG updates during the day, since the "Schedule Running" options quit working.  HOwever, this causes AVG to gripe at my computers throughout the day, saying they cannot contact the Update Manager server.  This is not desireable.  I would hope AVG could fix this undesireable behaviour and re-enable the ability to "Schedule running", which the Help file says should already be available.

Brent, AVG Free definitions update schedule latest situ.. Have a look @ the latest User Manual (http://aa-download.avg.com/filedir/doc/AVG_Free/avg_free_uma_en_ltst_09.pdf) [See Page 58] By default, the task is launched automatically (Run automatically) as soon as a new virus definition update is available. Unfortunately, for AVG AntiVirus Free Edition, there is no personal settings of this task available. Should you like to have access to further and extended functionality of AVG paid products; then please visit AVG website (http://www.avg.com/) for AVG purchase information.

Hello Brent,

As Alan stated "Unfortunately, within AVG Antivirus Free Edition the option of setting your own parameters of the update schedule is disabled, so you cannot limit the number of update launches. This configuration is only accessible in the paid AVG product version.".
The items that you are mentioning are part of the manual as they are visible in the program and available only in paid versions.
Please feel free to contact us should you need any assistance.

Automatic updates can also not be disabled. This is a big problem for personal network access accounts. Since the later AVG version does not allow for manual check, those updates eat up my monthly data limit at home. I need to check manual updates whenever I am on networks for which I do not have to pay.
If there is no way to switch this off, I am going to uninstall AVG -- which I have used for the past 10 years or so - and use another product.

Hello Jacques,
As we have mentioned earlier unfortunately, within AVG Antivirus Free Edition the option of setting your own parameters of the update schedule is disabled, so you cannot limit the number of update launches. This configuration is only accessible in the paid AVG product version. The automatic updates will be carried out regularly to keep your PC more protected.
Thank you.

Not having the option to CHOOSE when AVG FREE version updates definitions and program is VERY disturbing. As a pensioner I cannot afford to buy an upgrade. It is MOST unfair that users of the free version do not have the option of choosing updating times. The AVG starts updating automatically when working and it slows down the laptop considerably and interferes with my work. If I disable it, it gives me a message that I am not protected. The constant updates also USE UP data quickly and I cannot afford this either, as a pensioner! EVERY time I log into Internet to get my mail, AVG automatically starts to update, eating into my data and slowing down my machine. Why can we not set it to update say only once a week or every second week?? Why do we have to accept automatic updates EVERY time we go onto the Web?? This is GROSSLY unfair and if AVG cannot change this then I am UNINSTALLING the program and finding some other free package which allows choose of update schedules. Period.

I have been using AVG Free Antivirus for many years, but I am now going to uninstall it.  I simply cannot tolerate having the program start an update when I am in the middle of doing something important.  Goodbye, AVG.

Hello Ted,

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Have you installed our latest 2016 version of AVG free antivirus?
Does it brings up the screen as it is Updating when you are doing an important work?
Please be informed that updates for an antivirus program are highly mandatory and AVG antivirus will check for updates regularly and if there is any updates available it will update it and you will get the popup at the bottom right corner as Update installed successfully.

I have been using AVG for almost 10 years now. and only recently, did AVG make it impossible to change the update schedule. I know as a computer professional that updates are important, but to eliminate the ability to schedule this is terribly frustrating. I will be ending my releationship with AVG and removing it from my entire family's computers. Also, I am recinding my future recommendations to family, friends, & collegues.

Hello Randy,
We regret for the inconvenience caused. We keep you informed that we have recently enhanced our AVG products which have the option to change the update schedule. We would request you to know whether you have installed AVG 2015 or 2016 version and also mention it's free or a paid version along with product name to assist further. Thank you.

"This has been implemented purely for the benefits of our customers." Absolute garbage.

I've been using AVG for years and haven't had the BS problems I've had with the most recent versions of it.  I have a very limited data usage capacity per month, which means I go to WiFi cafes to do any necessary updates. The fact that no matter what I do the program KEEPS UPDATING ITSELF (I've the update definitions disabled so I'm assuming it's the program update schedule, over which I have no control at all) is frustrating and enraging.  Due to working from home, I carefully parcel out my internet usage to avoid overages; because of this ridiculous nonsense now associated with AVG I've had overage charges three times in the past few months!

I'm done with this stupidity.  Stop worry about what's easiest for you and start giving a damn about what your consumers want.

Hello CV,
We regret the inconvenience caused. Due to the arrival of new threats and infections, we have updated our AVG security program with high new security patches and updates to enhance the computer security. We would like to know whether you have installed AVG paid or a free version on your system and also mention your product name to assist further. Thank you.

I don't have any of it installed anymore. Why would I keep using software that's doing things at times I cannot have it doing so, which is in turn costing me money in overage charges?  Needing updates is understandable but if I can't control WHEN they are done...no thanks.

Prior to uninstalling I was using the AVG 2016 Protection free version. Yes, the free version--which for years never had this nonsensical BS attached to it.  Consider your company blacklisted with me, my family, and close friends until you do better by people.

Having used AVG Free for many years and recommended it to all my friends, I too am dissapointed that I cannot schedule updates any more.
I only use my PC occasionally as required, and often only switch it on when I need to do something quick. I now find that I have to wait up to 10 minutes sometimes before AVG finishes what it is doing and lets me on to the internet.
I am grateful for the free program that AVG has afforded me over the years, but it is now becoming a serious inconvenience when I switch on my pC, to the point I am considering changing to an alternative program, and advising my friends to do the same.

I have Also sent my concerns to AVG support, as I am astounded that the option to update at THE USERS CONVENIENCE has been taken away from us. Of course we all KNOW the importance of updating Anti Virus software, but we are grown adults not children, and as such such be allowed to decide when the updating procedure will not cause us problems, by slowing down the pc, using internet allowance, etc. I will also be removing AVG from my familys PC's after many many years using it.

For some insane reason, AVG Definitions Updates can not be turned off in Advanced Settings under Schedules again!  Very inconvienient for people who count on performance at a specific time or have limited data to work with.  Most people run the update every day they turn on their computer anyway.  AVG tried to implement this two or three years ago, there was an uproar from users, and they reenabled the option.  Perhaps learning from the past is in order, ...before people go somewhere else - again.

I went looking for the answer to this question. I'm sorry I found it here, since I now need to remove AVG from my system. By taking away my ability to say whether or not I want an update, you're telling me that my money for your paid version isn't wanted, because you don't trust me enopugh to be able to handle the free one on my own computer. SO, I'll be looki9ng for another antiviral, since AVG feels that I don't have the mental capacity to make my own decisions.
