Tray Icon and Program Won't Open Normally

I have Windows XP with service pack 3. I've never had an issue ever before with AVG. The version I currently have is AVG Free Edition 16.131.7924 I got on  my computer last night and realized my AVG icon down in the system tray was gone. Went reading and researching online and decided to try an uninstall it and re-install it, however, trying to UNINSTALL it from the control panal add and remove won't work, I get an error that says: Unexpected error Sorry, we've run into a problem during installation. (Error code: 0xc007001d) I went to start, programs and tried to open AVG from there and it won't open. The ONLY way I can get it to open is to go into my pictures folder, right click on a picture and click to scan with AVG, then it opens. While I had it open, I clicked to update it, then closed the program, shut down my computer and restarted it, and the AVG icon is still missing from my system tray and still won't open when I click the program to open it. I checked to make sure I have the box checked for it to load at start up, it's checked, I checked in Services to make sure it's set for automatic and it is, I checked in Msconfig to make sure it has a check in the box, it does. When I right clicked on a picture and clicked scan with AVG to get it to open, I did a full scan on my computer and have no viruses. I don't understand what the issue is and why my icon disapeared and why the program won't open normally now. Please help. Thank you in advance.

Thank you for providing necessary information, Tracy.

I have this exact same issue!

I'm also on Windows XP SP3. I also had no problems until just the other day.

Tray notification disappeared. I was told to go into Control Panel and click Change and do a Repair. But when I tried to I got (Error code: 0xc007001d).

Since I couldn't repair, I decided to try to remove AVG and reinstall. I used the Remove tool to get rid of it. Then I went to install the latest version of AVG Free. But every time I try to install it, when it gets to 0 seconds, it pauses for a while and then I get "avgsetupx.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." If I click the links to get to the technical error report, it says "Code: 0xc000001d".

I also went and got an older version of AVG Free and tried to install that. But in the end I got the same "Unexpected Error - Sorry, we've run into a problem during installation (Error code: 0xc007001d")

So now I have no AVG and I can't install it back on at all.

What do I (and the original poster of this thread) do? Is there a bug making this not install right on XP right now?

It looks like this may be a new version of a very old problem. You can see in this thread from last year

Even after a lot of posts in that thread it doesn't seem anybody ever fixed that problem. And now it is happening to more of us.

Hello A,
We apologize for the inconvenience. The latets AVG program works fine with the computers that has Windows XP SP3 with recent SSD3 compatiblity. If you have this, you will be able to install AVG without any issue. We are sorry to know that you are unable to install AVG now. However, you can upgrade your computer to make the AVG program compatible for your computer.
Thank you

Well which anwser is the correct answer since I got two different replies? Now after reading AF's post as well, I'm even afraid to use the AVG Uninstaller tool for fear I won't be able to re-install it and won't have ANY protection at all then. But as of right now, I don't even really know if it's working and protecting my computer.

Tracy,
We would like to confirm that the error code 0xc007001D represents that the processor on your PC is old and not compatible with AVG installation. Please consider upgrading your PC to minimum system requirements as in http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=What-are-AVG-system-requirements-and-supported-opearting-systems and then try to install AVG.
Feel free to let us know if you require any further assistance.

I just looked at the link you posted above, and my computer does meet the minimum system requirments. Any other suggestions? The way it is now, is it even protecting my computer? I am still able to download updates for it. Thank you in advance.

Tracy,
May we know which processor are you using? The error code 0xc007001D represents that you are not using a processor that is SSE2 instruction set capable. Please confirm which make and model of processor you are using.

I have an AMD Athlon XP Processor 2.08 GHz.

Haven't heard anything back after posting the requested info. Any other suggestions? And the way things are now, is AVG even protecting my computer? Thank you in advance.

Hello Tracy,
We are sorry to inform you that your CPU which does not support SSE2 hence AVG can't be installed.
Thank you.

Is this due to a recent update or something? Because it IS installed on my computer and has been for some time and I haven't had any issues with it until now. Where can I find the uninstaller because trying to remove it from the control panel add and remove doesn't work, it gives me an error and won't uninstall. Thank you in advance.
