Troubleshooting for sending emails when connected via AVG Secure VPN

When connected to AVG Secure VPN, you may experience problems while trying to send emails from an email client, such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, or Apple Mail (Mac). This article contains instructions to solve such issues.

AVG Secure VPN has no impact on email behavior if you access your web based email account via an internet browser.

Instructions

Configuring outgoing SMTP server settings in your email client to use the port 465 or 587 and SSL/TLS encryption usually solves the issue.

To change SMTP settings in Microsoft Outlook:

  1. Click FileInfoAccount Settings.
  2. Ensure the Email tab is selected, then select your account from the list and click Change... to open your account settings.
  3. Ensure the correct hostname or IP address is entered for the Outgoing mail server (SMTP), as required by your email service provider. Then, click More Settings... to open Internet E-mail Settings.
We recommend you to use a specific IP address for the SMTP server, especially if the provider uses multiple SMTP servers.
  1. Select the Outgoing Server tab, then ensure My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is enabled, and specify an authentication method, if required by your email service provider.
  2. Select the Advanced tab.
  3. Change the port number for the Outgoing server (SMTP) to 465 or 587, based on the requirements of your email service provider.
  4. Select SSL (or TLS) to enable an encrypted connection, if supported by your email service provider.
  5. Click OK, then Next and Finish to confirm your changes.
  6. Repeat these steps from step 2. for each email account you use.

To change SMTP settings in Mozilla Thunderbird:

  1. Select your account name in the left panel, then click View settings for this account to open Account Settings.
  2. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) under Local Folders in the left panel. Then, select SMTP server from the list and click Edit... to open SMTP Server settings.
  3. Ensure the correct hostname or IP address is entered for the Server Name, as required by your email service provider.
We recommend you to use a specific IP address for the SMTP server, especially if the provider uses multiple SMTP servers.
  1. Change the Port number to 465 or 587, based on the requirements of your email service provider.
  2. For Connection security select SSL/TLS encryption, if supported by your email service provider. Additionally specify Authentication method, if required by your email service provider.
  3. Click OK to confirm your changes.
  4. Repeat these steps from step 2. for each SMTP server you use.

To change SMTP settings in Mail app on Mac:

  1. Open Apple Mail, then ensure the Apple Mail window is active and click MailPreferences... in the menu bar.
  2. Select Accounts. Then, select your account in the panel left and click Server Settings.
  3. Under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), use the Account menu to select Edit SMTP Server List....
  4. Select your SMTP server from the list, then click Server Settings.
  5. Ensure the correct hostname or IP address is entered for the Host Name, as required by your email service provider.
We recommend you to use a specific IP address for the SMTP server, especially if the provider uses multiple SMTP servers.
  1. Untick Automatically manage connection settings.
  2. Change the Port number to 465 or 587, based on the requirements of your email service provider. Tick the option Use TLS/SSL to enable an encrypted connection, if supported by your email service provider. Additionally specify an Authentication method, if required by your email service provider.
  3. Click OK to confirm your changes.
  4. Repeat these steps from step 4. for each SMTP server you use.

Since we have no control over these servers, we cannot provide the full list of IP addresses.

If you are still having trouble, your email service provider may be restricting access. Some possible restrictions:
  • Access blocked to datacenter IP addresses
  • Access only allowed to residential IP addresses
  • Access only allowed to IP addresses of its own country
  • Access only allowed to certain internet service providers
  • AVG Secure VPN 1.x for Windows
  • AVG Secure VPN 1.x for Mac
