Updating AVG Antivirus Virus definitions and application version

AVG Antivirus uses a database of known Virus definitions to identify malware and other threats on your PC, which is why it is important to ensure the Virus definitions are regularly updated. The application refers to the user interface and all components in AVG Antivirus. Updates to the application provide bug fixes and general improvements.

Manage updates online via the AVG Antivirus application

By default, AVG Antivirus is set to update the Virus definitions and application automatically whenever a new version is available. We strongly recommend you keep automatic updates enabled.

Manually update Virus definitions

  1. Double-click the AVG icon on your desktop to open the application.
  2. Click the Refresh icon next to Virus definition in the bottom-right corner of the main AVG Antivirus screen.
  3. Wait while AVG checks for virus definition updates.
  4. When the update is complete, you see Virus definitions are up to date.
  5. If you are asked to restart your PC, click Restart Now to reboot immediately.

Manually update the application

NOTE: The application update also includes an update of Engine and Virus definitions.

  1. Open your AVG Antivirus application and go to MenuSettings.
  2. Ensure General is selected in the left panel and select Update.
  3. In the application section, click Check For Updates.
  4. Wait while AVG checks for application updates.
  5. When the update is complete, you see Your application is up to date.
  6. If you are asked to restart your PC, click Restart Now to reboot immediately.

Manage automatic Virus definition updates

  1. Open the AVG user interface and click MenuSettings.
  2. Ensure General is selected in the left panel and select Update.
  3. In the Virus definitions section, click More options, then tick your preferred option:
    • Automatic update (enabled by default): updates are downloaded and installed automatically on a regular basis. No actions are required from you.
    • Ask when an update is available: notifies you when an update is available. Your confirmation is required to complete the update.
    • Manual update (not recommended): updates are not automatically installed and you are not notified when a new update is available.
    • Enable streaming updates (enabled by default): downloads micro-updates continuously as new malware is discovered.

Manage automatic application updates

  1. Open the AVG user interface and click MenuSettings.
  2. Ensure General is selected in the left panel and select Update.
  3. In the application section, click More options, then tick your preferred option:
    • Automatic update (enabled by default): updates are regularly downloaded and installed. No actions are required from you.
    • Ask when update is downloaded: notifies you when updates are downloaded. Your confirmation is required to complete the update.
    • Ask when an update is available: notifies you when updates are available (before downloading). To receive the update, you need to start the download and installation process manually.
    • Manual update (not recommended): updates are not automatically installed and you are not notified when a new update is available.

Configure proxy settings

The Proxy Settings section is for users who connect to the internet through a proxy server. This section allows you to adjust your proxy settings to avoid issues with downloading Virus definitions and application updates.

NOTE: If you connect directly to the internet, you can ignore this section as the Use specific proxy server option is disabled by default.

To configure proxy settings for application updates:

  1. Tick the box next to Use specific proxy server and type your proxy details into the relevant text box.
    • Type: select HTTP or SOCKS4.
    • Address: type the address of your proxy server.
    • Authentication type: if the proxy server requires authentication, specify the type and enter the Username and Password.

    NOTE: If you do not know your proxy details, contact your network administrator or your internet service provider (ISP).

Manage updates offline via the AVG Download Center

IMPORTANT: Only update AVG Antivirus offline if you do not have access to an internet connection, or if it was recommended by AVG Support for troubleshooting purposes. Otherwise, we strongly recommend managing updates online via the AVG Antivirus application.

Update Virus definitions offline

  1. On any Windows PC with internet access, go to the AVG Download Center.
  2. Locate your version of AVG Antivirus and click More options.
  3. In the Update section at the bottom of the screen, click Update File to download the latest Virus definitions.
  4. Locate the downloaded aviupd.exe file and transfer it to removable storage (for example a USB flashdrive). By default, all downloaded files are saved in your Downloads folder.
  5. Connect your removable storage to the relevant PC.
  6. Locate aviupd.exe, right-click the file, and select Run as administrator.
  7. Click Yes in the User Account Control dialog.
  8. Click Done to confirm that AVG Antivirus was successfully updated.

Update application version offline

Follow the instructions below to install the latest version of AVG Antivirus on your PC using an offline installer. The installer automatically recognizes and updates your existing version of AVG, so it is not necessary to first uninstall the older version.

  1. On any Windows PC with internet access, go to the AVG Download Center.
  2. Locate your version of AVG Antivirus and click More options.
  3. Under Installation files (trial/paid version) click Offline installer.
  4. Locate the downloaded avg_internet_security_setup_offline.exe file and transfer it to removable storage (for example a USB flashdrive). By default, all downloaded files are saved in your Downloads folder.
  5. Connect your removable storage to the relevant PC.
  6. Locate avg_internet_security_setup_offline.exe, right-click the file, and select Run as administrator.
  7. Click Yes in the User Account Control dialog.
  8. Click Install and wait while the latest version of AVG Antivirus is installed on your PC.
  9. Click Continue to go to the AVG Antivirus main screen.
