AVG Secure VPN for Windows and Mac - Getting Started

AVG Secure VPN is a virtual private network that secures your internet connection using an encrypted tunnel to disguise your real location.

This article explains how to start using AVG Secure VPN.

This article assumes that the latest version of AVG Secure VPN is already installed on your device. For detailed installation instructions, refer to the following article:

Open AVG Secure VPN

You can open AVG Secure VPN using one of the methods below:

  • Double-click the AVG Secure VPN icon on your Windows desktop.
  • Double-click the AVG Secure VPN icon in the notification area of your Windows taskbar.
  • Click the AVG Secure VPN icon in your menu bar and select Open AVG Secure VPN.
  • Click GoApplications in the menu bar, then double-click the AVG Secure VPN icon.

Connect to AVG Secure VPN

You can use AVG Secure VPN any time you want to connect to the internet with extra security and privacy.

To connect to AVG Secure VPN, click the red (OFF) slider on the main AVG Secure VPN screen so that it changes to green (ON).

To connect to AVG Secure VPN, click the red (OFF) slider on the main AVG Secure VPN screen so that it changes to green (ON).

You are now connected to the AVG Secure VPN default server. You can change the default VPN server location if needed.

Change location

AVG Secure VPN has servers in several locations, which means you can bypass geolocation restrictions as well as access your favorite content while traveling.

To connect to a different location:

  1. Click Change Location on the main AVG Secure VPN screen.
  2. Optionally use the side menu to view all of the servers in a specific continent, servers that offers P2P connection, or servers that are optimized for streaming.
  3. Select a country and city.

AVG Secure VPN automatically connects to the location you selected.

If a website reports that your location is incorrect, or if you suspect that your location is not properly hidden, refer to the following article for detailed troubleshooting steps:

Manage settings

  1. Open AVG Secure VPN and go to MenuSettings.
  2. Select the relevant option in the left panel to configure your application settings:
    • General: Configure startup options, and specify when you receive notifications from AVG Secure VPN.
    • Network Security: Specify when you want to automatically connect to the internet via AVG Secure VPN servers. You can also add Trusted networks, which are excluded from automatic connection by default. For more information, refer to the following article:
  1. Open AVG Secure VPN and go to MenuSettings.
  2. Select the relevant option in the left panel to configure your application settings:
    • General: Configure startup options, specify when you receive notifications from AVG Secure VPN, and manage the data that you share with AVG and third-parties.
    • Network Security: Specify when you want to automatically connect to the internet via AVG Secure VPN servers. You can also add Trusted networks, which are excluded from automatic connection by default. For more information, refer to the following article:
    • Subscription: Manage your AVG Secure VPN subscription using the options below:
      • Subscription Information: Check details relating to your current subscription period. Click Manage Subscription to open the linked AVG Account, where you can view additional details and manage your subscription. If you don't have an AVG Account, click Create an account from the login screen to create one.
      • Deactivate your VPN on this Mac: If you no longer want to use AVG Secure VPN on the current macOS device, click Deactivate. AVG Secure VPN remains installed, but your paid subscription is no longer active. This is useful if you want to start using your subscription on a new device.
