AVG Secure VPN is a virtual private network that secures your internet connection using an encrypted tunnel to disguise your real location, and prevent others from eavesdroping on your online activity over public Wi-Fi and unsecured networks.

To start using AVG Secure VPN, refer to instructions in the relevant section below according to device:

Windows PC

Install and activate AVG Secure VPN

Open AVG Secure VPN

Open AVG Secure VPN using either method below:

  • Double-click the AVG Secure VPN icon on your Windows desktop to open the application.
  • Right-click the AVG Secure VPN system tray icon on your Windows taskbar and select Open AVG Secure VPN.

Connect to AVG Secure VPN

AVG Secure VPN can be used any time you want to connect to the internet with extra security and privacy, and is especially recommended when you are connected to a public or unsecured wireless network.

To connect to AVG Secure VPN:

  1. Open AVG Secure VPN.
  2. Click the OFF slider so it turns ON.

You are now connected to the AVG Secure VPN default server. You can change the default VPN server location if needed.

Connect to a different location

AVG Secure VPN has servers in several locations which means you can bypass geolocation restrictions as well as access your favorite content while traveling.

To connect to a different location:

  1. Open AVG Secure VPN.
  2. Click Change location.
  3. Click your preferred country and city.
  4. Click Change Location.

Your VPN automatically re-connects and your location is updated. If certain websites claim that you are connected to a different city than the city you selected as your VPN location, refer to the following article:

Manage Secure VPN settings

To manage AVG Secure VPN settings:

  1. Open AVG Secure VPN.
  2. Click Settings (the gear icon) in the top-right corner of the main application screen.
  3. Adjust settings in the sections below by clicking the relevant tab in the left panel:
    • General:
      • Show Secure VPN notifications: Receive a notification each time AVG Secure VPN connects or disconnects.
      • Start Secure VPN when my computer starts: Automatically open the AVG Secure VPN interface each time you start your PC.
    • Network Security:
      • Turn on the VPN: Configure settings relating to when AVG Secure VPN automatically connects, or prompts you to connect to a VPN. You can also add to your list of Trusted Networks. For more information, refer to the article below:
      • Activate Kill Switch: Enable this option to block your internet connection if AVG Secure VPN servers unexpectedly disconnect. This ensures that your online activity always remains private.
    • Language: Specify in which language the AVG Secure VPN interface is displayed.
  4. Click OK to save your settings, or Cancel to exit the application settings screen.

Install and activate AVG Secure VPN

Open AVG Secure VPN

Open AVG Secure VPN using either method below:

  • Click the AVG Secure VPN icon in your menu bar and select Open AVG Secure VPN.
  • Click Go in the menu bar and select Applications, then double-click the AVG Secure VPN icon.

Manage Secure VPN settings

To manage AVG Secure VPN settings:

  1. Open AVG Secure VPN.
  2. Ensure the AVG Secure VPN windows is active, click AVG Secure VPN to the left of your menu bar, then select Preferences....
  3. Adjust settings in the sections below by clicking the relevant tab in the left panel:
    • General:
      • Show Secure VPN notifications: Receive a notification each time AVG Secure VPN is connected or disconnected.
      • Show Secure VPN in the menu bar: Open the AVG Secure VPN interface and check your privacy status via the menu bar icon.
      • Start Secure VPN when my computer starts: Automatically open the AVG Secure VPN interface each time you start your Mac.
      • Show offers for our other products: Receive notifications about other AVG products that may interest you.
      • Update using beta channel: Receive updates to the application version before they are released to the public.
      • Third party crash reporting: Send crash report data to help us diagnose and resolve problems with this app.
    • Network Security:
      • Turn on the VPN: Configure settings relating to when AVG Secure VPN automatically connects, or prompts you to connect to a VPN. You can also add to your list of Trusted Networks. For more information, refer to the article below:
      • Activate Kill Switch: Enable this option to block your internet connection if AVG Secure VPN servers unexpectedly disconnect. This ensures that your online activity always remains private.
    • Account:
      • Subscription Information: Check details relating to your current subscription cycle. Click Manage Subscription to open My Subscriptions in the connected AVG Account, where you can view additional details and manage your subscription. If you don't have an AVG Account, click Register from the login screen to create one.
      • Deactivate your VPN on this Mac: If you no longer want to use AVG Secure VPN on the current macOS device, click Deactivate. AVG Secure VPN remains installed, but your paid subscription is no longer active. This is useful if you want to transfer your subscription to an alternative device.
  4. Click OK to save your settings, or Cancel to exit the application settings screen.
