What is AVG TuneUp?

AVG TuneUpAVG TuneUp Premium is an optimization tool that includes a range of scans to detect unnecessary items and performance issues, freeing up disk space and improving the speed of your system.

How will AVG TuneUp improve the performance of my device?

With frequent use, the reliability and performance of your PC begins to decline. You may notice the following issues:

  • Applications that run very slowly, crash, or freeze.
  • A lack of disk space.
  • Popups from 'bloatware' applications.

When you use AVG TuneUp to scan for and resolve issues on your PC, you improve the speed of your PC, clear disk space, eliminate unwanted applications, and fix corrupted internal and external drives.

When you use AVG TuneUp Premium to scan for and resolve issues on your Mac, you improve the speed of your Mac, clear disk space, and eliminate unwanted applications.

Is there a free-trial version of AVG TuneUp available?

Yes. After you install AVG TuneUp, you have access to all paid product features for a limited time period. To continue using these paid features after your free trial expires, you need to purchase an AVG TuneUp subscription.

Can I use my PC during a scan?

Yes. You can continue to use your PC while AVG TuneUp scans and cleans. However, we recommend that you review the scan results to confirm any actions before AVG TuneUp cleans your PC.

Can I configure AVG TuneUp to run automatically?

Yes. You can configure AVG TuneUp to perform Maintenance scans automatically. Automatic Maintenance runs silently in the background with no actions required from you and frees up space on your PC by removing dispensable items, such as broken shortcuts and registry items. To enable Automatic Maintenance, go to MenuSettingsAutomatic Maintenance and click the red (OFF) slider so it changes to green (ON). The Automatic Maintenance settings screen also allows you to manually select which items AVG TuneUp deletes during Automatic Maintenance.

AVG TuneUp scans your PC every 7 days. Automatic Maintenance is only run if the scan reveals one of the following:
  • 100 MB or more of cleanable space on your system
  • 100 or more broken registry items
  • 100 or more broken shortcuts
  • 100 or more tracking cookies

What does AVG TuneUp do with my encrypted files?

AVG TuneUp ignores encrypted partitions and files to ensure your privacy and security. If your entire hard drive is encrypted, AVG TuneUp cannot scan and optimize your system.

Download and Installation

How do I install AVG TuneUp?

  1. Click the button below to download the AVG TuneUp setup file, and save it to a familiar location on your PC (by default, all files are saved to your Downloads folder). Download AVG TuneUp for Windows
  2. Right-click the downloaded setup file avg_tuneup_online_setup.exe and select Run as administrator from the context menu.
  3. If prompted for permission by the User Account Control dialog, click Yes.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation.

AVG TuneUp is now installed in free-trial mode. If you have already purchased AVG TuneUp, you need to activate your subscription to continue using paid product features after the free trial expires. Otherwise, click Extend Subscription to purchase AVG TuneUp.

If you see the message You're in scan only mode, either activate an existing subscription or click Subscribe Now to purchase an AVG TuneUp Premium subscription.

What are the system requirements for AVG TuneUp?

  • Windows 10 except Mobile and IoT Core Edition (32 or 64-bit); Windows 8/8.1 except RT and Starter Edition (32 or 64-bit); Windows 7 SP1 or later, any Edition (32 or 64-bit).
  • Windows fully compatible PC with Intel Pentium 4 / AMD Athlon 64 processor or above (must support SSE2 instructions).
  • 256 MB RAM or above.
  • 400 MB free space on the hard disk.
  • Internet connection to download, activate, and maintain application updates.
  • Optimal standard screen resolution no less than 1024 x 768 pixels.
  • Apple macOS 11.x (Big Sur), Apple macOS 10.15.x (Catalina), Apple macOS 10.14.x (Mojave), Apple macOS 10.13.x (High Sierra), Apple macOS 10.12.x (Sierra), Apple Mac OS X 10.11.x (El Capitan), Apple Mac OS X 10.10.x (Yosemite).
  • Intel based Mac computer with 64-bit processor.
  • 512 MB RAM or above (1 GB RAM or higher preferred).
  • 68 MB minimum hard disk free space.
  • Internet connection to download, activate, and maintain application updates.
  • Optimally standard screen resolution not less than 1024 x 768 pixels.

Subscription and Activation

How do I activate a paid subscription?

AVG TuneUp is a paid product that requires a subscription to use. After installing AVG TuneUp, you may need to manually activate your subscription using one of the methods below:

  • AVG Account: Activate AVG TuneUp by signing in to the application with your AVG Account that is linked to the email address you provided during the subscription purchase. Click My AVGMy SubscriptionSign in to your AVG Account.
  • Activation code: Activate AVG TuneUp using the activation code from your order confirmation email. Click My AVGMy SubscriptionEnter a valid activation code.
  • AVG Account: Activate AVG TuneUp Premium by signing in to the application with your AVG Account that is linked to the email address you provided during the subscription purchase. In the top-right corner of the main application screen, click Log inLog in to existing account.
  • Activation code: Activate AVG TuneUp using the activation code from your order confirmation email. Ensure AVG TuneUp Premium is open and active, then select AVG TuneUpInsert activation code on the left side of the menu bar.

How can I transfer my AVG TuneUp subscription to another device?

  • Uninstall AVG TuneUp from the original device.
  • Install AVG TuneUp on the new device.
  • Activate your subscription on the new device.
You can use your subscription simultaneously on the number of devices specified during purchase. Check your order confirmation email or your AVG Account to clarify how many devices your subscription is valid for.

What should I do if activation is unsuccessful?

If you experience activation issues using an activation code:

  1. Ensure you have correctly entered your activation code, including hyphens.
  2. Use our webform or your AVG Account to retrieve a copy of your activation code, then try activating the subscription again.

If you experience activation issues using your AVG Account:

  1. Ensure that you are entering the credentials for the AVG Account that is linked to your AVG TuneUp subscription. To verify this, sign in to your AVG Account in your web browser and click the Subscriptions tile to see a list of the linked subscriptions.
  2. If your AVG TuneUp subscription is not linked to an AVG Account, you can create an AVG Account with the email address that you used to purchase AVG TuneUp.

In some cases, subscription synchronization may take up to 24 hours after purchase. If your subscription is still not active after this time, refer to the following article:

Can I use my AVG TuneUp subscription on multiple devices?

Yes. An AVG TuneUp (Multi-Device) subscription is valid on up to 10 devices simultaneously and includes AVG TuneUp for Windows, AVG TuneUp Premium for Mac, AVG Cleaner PRO for Android.

If you are not sure which subscription you purchased, check your AVG Account that is linked to the email address you provided during the subscription purchase, or an order confirmation email.

Is AVG TuneUp included with AVG Internet Security?

No. You cannot use an AVG Internet Security subscription to activate AVG TuneUp.

You can purchase a separate AVG TuneUp subscription via the AVG Store. Alternatively, you can purchase an AVG subscription bundle (such as AVG Ultimate) that is valid for multiple products.

How do I use AVG TuneUp?

How can I ensure that AVG TuneUp does not remove critical files?

After AVG TuneUp completes a scan, you can review and manage any found issues before anything is cleaned.

If Automatic Maintenance is enabled, you can select which items AVG TuneUp has permission to automatically clean by clicking MenuSettingsAutomatic Maintenance.

What is a Maintenance scan?

The Maintenance scan is a comprehensive scan that checks for the following issues on your PC:

  • Broken registry items: links in your system registry that may be outdated or broken.
  • Broken shortcuts: invalid shortcuts leading to non-existent files or applications.
  • System junk: unnecessary files (such as driver packages, temporary files, and log files) that occupy a lot of space and slow down your system.
  • Browser cache: a temporary storage location on your computer that holds downloaded files (for example, picture files stored from websites).
  • Tracking & other cookies: data files that record information about the websites you visit.
  • Browsing & download history: the history of visited websites and downloaded files from your browser (this option only removes the list of files and does not delete any files stored on your PC).

To launch a Maintenance scan, open AVG TuneUp and click the Maintenance tile.

What is Speed up?

During a Speed Up scan, AVG TuneUp checks for the following issues:

  • Background & Startup Programs: programs that may have been pre-installed on your PC or installed unknowingly with other programs.
  • Unnecessary programs: programs on your PC that are installed with background processes and continue to run even when the corresponding program is closed.

To launch a Speed up scan, open AVG TuneUp and click the Speed up tile.

What is Free up Space?

The Free up Space option scans for leftover files created by the system, programs, or installers (such as temporary, log, and cached files, including browser data) which may be taking up large amounts of disk space on your PC.

To launch a Free up Space scan, open AVG TuneUp and click the Free up Space tile.

If you select the Downloads option for cleaning during a Free up Space scan, we recommend checking that it contains no important or irreplaceable files before continuing.

What is Fix problems?

During a Fix problems scan, AVG TuneUp checks for the following issues:

  • Unusual system settings: settings configurations that may affect the reliability of your PC's behavior.
  • Outdated programs: commonly used software on your PC that is out of date. Refer to the following section in this article for more information:
  • Disk errors: corrupted files on your internal and external drives. Refer to the following section in this article for more information:
  • Disk fragmentation: data fragments that are stored separately on the hard disk drive. Refer to the following section in this article for more information:

To launch a Fix Problems scan, open AVG TuneUp and click the Fix problems tile.

What is Outdated programs?

Outdated programs keeps commonly used third-party software updated to eliminate potential security risks and improve the overall performance of your system. To specify how AVG TuneUp responds when it detects an outdated program on your PC, go to MenuSettingsOutdated programs. The following options are available:

  • Automatic updates: checks for, downloads, and installs updates automatically. No action is required from you.
  • Pre-download updates: automatically checks for and downloads available updates, but you need to install them manually.
  • Check for updates: checks for available updates, but you need to download and install them manually.

If you don't enable Automatic updates, you can manage the download and installation of updates by clicking All functions (the grid icon) on the right side of the AVG TuneUp dashboard and selecting Show outdated programs.

What is Disk Doctor?

Disk Doctor scans your internal and external drives for disk errors caused by corrupted files, then offers to repair any found issues. If left unrepaired, corrupted files can cause crashes, unexpected behavior, problems starting your PC, and the loss of personal data.

By default, AVG TuneUp notifies you when a scan is recommended. You can also check this manually by clicking All functions (the grid icon) on the right side of the AVG TuneUp dashboard and selecting Open Disk Doctor. When a scan is recommended, an information panel is visible on the Disk Doctor screen. Choose the relevant action below:

  • Scan Now: Run a scan of the relevant drive to check for issues.
  • Ignore: A scan is not run. You can run the scan later later by clicking disks ignored at the bottom of the Disk Doctor screen.
  • Details: View additional information about the relevant drive.

What is Disk defrag and optimization?

Fragmentation occurs when fragments of the same file are stored separately on the hard disk drive. This can slow down your system, as fragmented files take longer to retrieve and access. Disk defrag and optimization improves performance and storage efficiency by re-organizing your hard disk drive to ensure that fragments of the same file are stored together.

Defragging is only recommended if you have an HDD (Hard Disk Drive). If you have a SSD (Solid State Drive), defragging is not necessary or beneficial. AVG TuneUp automatically detects your drive type and only offers to defrag HDDs.

To check if Disk defragging is recommended, go to All functionsDefragment or optimize disks.

What is the Rescue Center?

The Rescue Center allows you to undo certain changes made by AVG TuneUp. To access the Rescue Center, click the undo icon on the right side of the AVG TuneUp dashboard. You can view a list of actions and click Undo next to any actions you want to reverse.

How does AVG TuneUp determine the ratings for Unnecessary programs?

To determine a program's rating, AVG TuneUp uses a cloud-based rating system based on blacklists and whitelists, heuristic algorithms, AVG's Recommendation Engine, and user ratings. This makes it easier for you to determine which programs you want to keep and which programs you want to remove.

What is Clean clutter?

Clean clutter scans several areas of your hard drive and detects unnecessary files that you can remove to free up disk space on your Mac.

To perform a scan, click Scan under Clean clutter on the main AVG TuneUp Premium screen. After the scan completes, you can review the amount of space taken up by unnecessary files and select which files you want to remove from your Mac.

What is Find duplicates?

Find duplicates detects multiple files with identical content.

To perform a scan, click Scan under Find duplicates on the main AVG TuneUp Premium screen. After the scan completes, you can review the detected duplicate files and select which files you want to remove from your Mac.

What is Find photos?

Find photos detects photos that are blurry, badly-lit, or similar.

To perform a scan, click Find under Find photos on the main AVG TuneUp Premium screen. You can specify where AVG TuneUp Premium will look for photos, and then after the scan completes, review and select which photos you want to delete.

What is Uninstall apps?

Uninstall apps allows you to easily find and remove applications from your Mac that you no longer use.

To uninstall applications you no longer use, click Show under Uninstall apps on the main AVG TuneUp Premium screen. Review the list of applications installed on your Mac and select which applications you want to delete.

What is Alert Me?

Alert Me is a notification feature that prompts you to scan your Mac when a specified amount of clutter is detected. Alert Me is enabled by default.

To disable this feature:

  1. Ensure the AVG TuneUp Premium window is open and active.
  2. Click AVG TuneUpPreferences on the left side of the menu bar.
  3. Select the Alerts tab.
  4. Untick the box next to Enable AlertMe!.

How can I uninstall AVG TuneUp?

Can I undo changes made by AVG TuneUp?

Yes. You can undo certain changes in the Rescue Center.

Not all AVG TuneUp actions can be reversed.

How can I report a problem or suspected bug?

If AVG TuneUp produces unexpected results or error messages, report the issue to AVG Support by submitting a ticket.

Send a detailed description of how to reproduce the error and include the following information:

  • Your version of Windows and your PC's brand, model, and graphics card.
  • Your macOS version.
  • A detailed description of the problem and the sequence of actions leading up the issue.
  • Any error messages displayed.
  • Any differences on your PC following the issue.
  • Any differences on your Mac following the issue.

How do I report a falsely identified junk file or program that AVG TuneUp removed from my system?

If AVG TuneUp disables or removes a file or an application that you wanted to keep, report the issue to AVG Support. Include the exact file or application name, all relevant details, and the undesired result.

What can I do if I see the error message 'Well, this is embarrassing'?

How can I control which data I share with AVG?

To change your personal privacy settings, follow these steps:

  1. Open AVG TuneUp and go to MenuSettings.
  2. Select GeneralPersonal privacy in the left panel.
  3. Untick the boxes next to the privacy settings according to your preferences.

Why do I need to close open applications before AVG TuneUp Premium continues cleaning?

When you perform a Clean clutter scan, AVG TuneUp Premium detects unnecessary files, including those stored in your browsers and applications. If the applications containing these files are running when you click Clean, AVG TuneUp Premium asks you to close the applications to prevent them from crashing or malfunctioning.

Why doesn't AVG TuneUp Premium clean anything from my system?

AVG TuneUp Premium is a paid product that requires a subscription to use. If you installed AVG TuneUp Premium but you have not purchased or activated a subscription, the application runs in scan-only mode and cannot clean anything.

Why do I need to grant permissions to AVG TuneUp Premium?

Each time you remove files, photos, or applications using AVG TuneUp Premium, you are asked to enter your administrator User Name and Password to authorize the removal. This stops unauthorized users clearing items from your system folders.

How do I send feedback about AVG TuneUp Premium?

  1. Ensure the AVG TuneUp Premium window is open and active.
  2. Click HelpSend Feedback on the left side of the menu bar.
  3. Enter your feedback, optionally include your name and email address, then click Submit Feedback.
