Preventing your Android device from stopping AVG apps

This article applies to the following AVG apps for Android: AVG AntiVirus, AVG Cleaner, and AVG Alarm Clock Xtreme.

To improve performance, some Android devices force apps to stop when your device screen turns off. This often causes apps to lose the Accessibility permission.

In this case, you need to manually re-enable the permission to maintain full app functionality. To re-enable the Accessibility permission, open your device settings, search for Accessibility, then grant this permission to your AVG Android app.

We recommend changing your device settings to prevent the app from losing the permission. Follow the relevant steps below according to your device:

Asus

  1. Open your device Settings.
  2. Tap Power management, then tap Auto-start Manager.
  3. On the Downloaded tab, tap Deny next to your AVG app to change this setting to Allow.
  4. Tap Allow to confirm the change.

Samsung

Follow the relevant steps below according to your Android version:

Samsung ( Android 13 )

The settings are mostly the same as Android 11 below, with a few changes:

The “Optimize battery usage” option doesn’t exist anymore under “Special Access”.
Under “Device Care” there is no “Automation” or “Advanced” option anymore.
So the existing options to change would be:

  1. The per-app setting. (ensure that AVG AV app in Android OS per App settings has the Battery option set to "Unrestricted"; navigate to Android Settings, search for Apps and find the AVG app in the list)
  2. Adaptive battery (search and disable this option in the Android Settings)
  3. Put unused apps to sleep ( either first try adding the AVG AV app to "Never auto sleeping apps" list, or if that fails to fix the issue, disable the option altogether)

The “Put unused apps to sleep” option is the major headache we see on Samsung - a non-standard app-killing feature that isn’t present in AOSP implemented only by Samsung which puts an app you did not use for X days to a mode with restricted background processing. On some releases, the period was short as 3 days.

Samsung (Android 11 and 12)

  1. Open your device Settings and tap Battery and device care.
  2. Tap Battery, then select Background usage limits.
  3. Tap Never sleeping apps.

  5. Tap Add to add the app to the list.

  1. Open your device Settings and tap Device care.
  2. Tap Battery, then select App power management.

Samsung (Android 9)

  1. Open your device Settings and tap Apps.
  2. Tap Menu (three dots) in the top-right corner, then select Special access.
