Troubleshooting when AVG TuneUp repeatedly reports outdated Java software

Outdated programs (in AVG TuneUp) or Software Update (in AVG PC TuneUp) may repeatedly report that Java 6 or Java 7 software is outdated and that your computer is vulnerable to risks, even if you have already installed the latest version of Java. This happens because the older version of Java is not automatically uninstalled when you install a newer version, and AVG will continue to report outdated Java until the older version is fully removed. As Oracle no longer supports Java 6 or Java 7, we strongly recommend uninstalling these versions and updating your Java by following steps in this article.

In rare cases, you may notice that programs on your PC behave differently after you update Java. This is because certain programs require an older Java version for full functionality.

Uninstall the older version of Java

  1. Click the Windows Start button, start typing Control Panel to open the search field, then select Control Panel from the search results.
  2. Under Programs, select Uninstall a program.
  3. For each entry named Java Runtime Environment 6 or Java Runtime Environment 7, right-click the entry and select Uninstall.
  1. On your keyboard, press the Win key and X key simultaneously and select Control Panel from the menu that appears.
  2. Under Programs, select Uninstall a program.
  3. For each entry named Java Runtime Environment 6 or Java Runtime Environment 7, right-click the entry and select Uninstall.
  1. Click the Windows Start button, then select Control Panel.
  2. Under Programs, select Uninstall a program.
  3. For each entry named Java Runtime Environment 6 or Java Runtime Environment 7, right-click the entry and select Uninstall.
