Troubleshooting issues after running AVG Driver Updater

AVG Driver Updater is a PC performance tool that scans your hardware for broken and outdated drivers, and updates them to prevent problems with your PC.

In some cases, updating a driver can cause problems on your PC, such as audio and trackpads not working properly, or issues with screen resolution and graphics quality. If this occurs, we recommend following the instructions in this article to revert back to the previous driver version.

Restore a driver

AVG Driver Updater allows you to restore individual drivers to their previous version. Follow the steps below to identify which driver has caused the issue on your PC and then restore the driver to its previous version. If you are unable to identify the problematic driver, we recommend following the Windows System Restore instructions.

Identify the problematic driver

  1. Double-click the AVG Driver Updater icon on your desktop to open the application.
  2. Click See Overview.
  3. Look for a driver name that includes the component that is experiencing issues. For example, if the sound on your PC has stopped working, look for an audio driver, or if the problem is with the graphics, look for a graphics driver.

Click Show details next to the driver you want to restore.
  4. Click Driver versions.
  5. Confirm you have selected the correct driver by checking the installed column. The driver version labeled installed now should have a corresponding installed date that matches when the issue started on your PC.

If the installed date does not match when the issue started, click the X in the top-right corner and return to step 3 above.

Restore the previous driver version

  1. Click Restore next to the driver version you want to restore. This is usually the version listed below the Installed now version.
AVG Driver Updater can only restore driver versions that were previously installed by Driver Updater. You cannot restore a driver version that was installed by your operating system or other third-party software.
  1. Click Restore to confirm.
  2. If prompted, click Restart to restart your PC.
  3. The selected driver reverts back to the previous version you chose to restore, and the latest driver version is marked as Skipped. Click the X in the top-right corner to close the window.

AVG Driver Updater automatically creates a Windows Restore Point before updating your drivers. This allows you to undo recent system changes and return your system to its previous state. We recommend using the Windows System Restore option if you are not sure which driver is causing the issue.

  1. Open Control Panel on your PC. For instructions, refer to the following Microsoft support article:
  2. In the Control Panel search box, type recovery.
  3. Select RecoveryOpen System Restore.
  4. Select Choose a different restore point, then click Next.
  5. Select the restore point that is dated before the issue started, then click Next.
If you do not see the restore point you need, tick the box next to Show more restore points.
  1. Click Finish.
  2. Click Yes to start the system restore.
  3. When your PC restart is complete, your system is returned to its previous state. Double-click the AVG Driver Updater icon on your desktop to open the application.
  4. Click Scan again to run the AVG Driver Updater scanner.
  5. Click Show details next to the outdated driver.
  6. Click the down arrow on the Update button, then select Skip Update.

The selected driver is moved to the Ignored and Skipped list. Repeat steps 10-11 above to skip the update for any other identified outdated drivers.
