Discontinued support for AVG AntiVirus version 19.1 and higher on Windows XP and Windows Vista - FAQs

As of January 2019, AVG no longer provides patches or technical support for AVG Internet Security and AVG AntiVirus FREE versions 19.1 and higher installed on the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic / Home Premium / Business / Enterprise / Ultimate - Service Pack 2, 32 / 64-bit
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home / Professional / Media Center Edition - Service Pack 3, 32-bit

Please update your operating system to Windows 7 or newer to benefit from enhanced features and higher detection rates in AVG Internet Security and AVG AntiVirus FREE versions 19.1 and higher.

While AVG still supports Windows 7-8, we highly recommend updating your operating system to Windows 10 or Windows 11 for optimal functionality of AVG Antivirus.

Which versions are no longer supported?

Support is discontinued for versions 19.1 and higher of the following products: AVG AntiVirus FREE and AVG Internet Security that are running on Windows XP or Windows Vista. These versions are supported on PCs running Windows 7 or newer.

Which versions are still supported on XP and Vista?

Versions 18.8 and lower of the following products: AVG AntiVirus FREE and AVG Internet Security are still supported on Windows XP and Windows Vista.

People using older versions of AVG on Windows XP or Windows Vista will continue to receive virus definition updates and be protected. However, we recommend upgrading to the newest versions of Windows and AVG Antivirus to benefit from the best detection rates and the newest features available.

How can I update my Windows PC and AVG Antivirus versions?

If you are using an older version of AVG Antivirus, and want to update to the latest version, you first need to update your Windows XP or Windows Vista operating system to Windows 7 or newer. To upgrade to Windows 7 or newer and install the latest AVG Antivirus version:

  1. Install Windows 7 or newer by following the instructions on Microsoft Support:
  2. Uninstall your AVG Antivirus application. For instructions, refer to the following article: Using the AVG Uninstall Tool.
  3. Install your preferred AVG Antivirus app:

Why should I update Windows PC and AVG Antivirus versions?

We recommend upgrading to the newest version to benefit from higher detection rates and enhanced features. This update is also recommended because the latest version is compatible with Microsoft Windows 10 and Microsoft Windows 11.

Keeping AVG Antivirus up to date gives you better protection and smoother user experience. The advantages are:

  • Better detection rates
  • Easier technical support
  • Fewer bugs and problems that still might exist in older versions
  • Further application updates to ensure the best protection for your PC

Can I still receive virus definition updates on versions that are no longer supported?

Yes - People using older versions will continue to receive virus definition updates and be protected. However, we recommend upgrading to the latest versions of Microsoft Windows and AVG AntiVirus to benefit from the best detection rates and newest features available.

Can I contact AVG Support when I am using a version that is no longer supported?

AVG support will ask you to update your operating system to Microsoft Windows 7 or newer before we can assist you with AVG AntiVirus FREE or AVG Internet Security versions 19.1 and higher.

What if I continue to use a version of AVG AntiVirus that is no longer supported?

People using older versions will continue to receive virus definition updates and be protected. However, we recommend upgrading to the newest version to benefit from the best detection rates and newest features.

If you prefer to run AVG AntiVirus FREE or AVG Internet Security on Windows XP or Windows Vista and require technical support, our support team will ask you to update to Windows 7 or newer before we can assist you with version 19.1 and higher.

How can I download AVG Antivirus for Windows XP?

If you still wish to use AVG Antivirus for Microsoft Windows XP, download AVG Free Antivirus for Windows XP and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process. Please keep in mind that you will not benefit from the best detection rates or the newest features.
