AVG Service

Hello. New here. Have been using AVG free for a long time and have never had any problems or issues with it - love it. For a while now I've noticed AVG Service has been using 80 to 100% disk usage alot - and especially when I wake my computer up from sleep. Sometimes this usage goes on for many minutes minutes (5, 6 or more) and interrupts internet usage as well. Has something changed with AVG recently - I never had this issue before. Thanks in advance.

Hello Drake,

This isn't the expected behavior.
Could you confirm that there was no virus scan in progress when you checked the CPU usage?
There are chances for this to happen when both old and new version of AVG are present on your computer.
To check this, get into C:\ drive and access "Program Filesx86" and "Program Files" folder.
Get into AVG folder and see whether it shows both "AV" and "Antivirus" folder in it.
Open AVG Antivirus free program interface, click on "Menu-->About" from it.
Take a screenshot of that window and post the image here. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions to post the image.
Thank you.

Thanks for your quick reply. I can confirm there is no scan in progress. There are indeed both AV and Antivirus folders present, plus a Franwork folder - nothing else. I have included a screenshot of my Menu-->About screen. To further clarify, I rarely shut my computer down - I leave it in sleep mode - and every time I wake it up this occurs - 80 to 100% disk use and very high mem use for several minutes. It also happens just while on the internet. Thank you for your time.

Hi Drake,
Thank you for updating the status.
This could happen if there are some older traces of AVG left over on your PC. We need to remove the traces using AVG remover and clear tools as mentioned in this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlName=Uninstall-AVG-software-Clear-Remover&supportType=home) . After restart, go to Run window (press windows key and R key simultaneously) and type the following comments to delete the folders manually.
1. Type “Temp” and press enter, remove all the files.
2. “%temp%” and remove all the files.
3. %appdata% - Remove all the AVG folders.
4. %programdata% - Open the AVG folder and remove the old files.
5. Type C: and press enter, delete AVG remover folder.
Please go to c: drive-> program files and delete the AVG files.
Once the traces of AVG are removed, please re-install the product as mentioned here (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-AntiVirus-Free).
Please keep us updated on the progress.

Priyanga;
Just to be clear steps 2 thru 4 require typing %temp%, then %appdata% and then %programdata%? Thanks.

Yes, Drake. Please type these commands in 'Run' window (press windows key and R key simultaneously) and delete the AVG folders.
Thank you.

Thank you Balasubramanian and Priyanga! Problem solved. The uninstall/reinstall worked - AVG Service still occupies a fair amount of memory but it's NOT running my harddrive all the time - which was my main concern. Thank you again for your support and the best AVG.

Thank you for updating the status, Drake.
It is the normal behavior that AVG services consumes certain amount of memory from your device.
Glad to hear that we were able to put you at ease. If you need any further help, please never hesitate to let us know.
