AVG free for windows 10

Following an update on my desktop computer to version 20.1.3112 on February 24 the automatic virus definitions is not working It just hangs and does nothing. It seems like the programme cannot see my internet connection. My internet connection is working OK for everything else. Anybody got any ideas as to what the problem might be and how to fix it

Hi Chris,

We are sorry to hear this.

We will help you to resolve the issue.

Are you getting any error message when you try to open the AVG?

How do you suspect that AVG is not detecting the internet connection?

Keep us posted.

Thank you Santosh. There is no error message. When I click on update virus definitions it seems to start the process and then just hangs with the green bar going back and forth. I have left it for over an hour but nothing happens. I am only guessing that AVG cannot see the internet. Have tried for a number of days now but nothing happens. I keep getting messages of course to say virus protection is out of date!

Chris, we appreciate your efforts so far but we regret that the issue persists.
I'd request to repair AVG, restart your PC and then attempt to update the virus definitions.
If you need anything else, do not hesitate to let us know.

Thank you Avinash.
I followed your instructions and got to the point where windows asks "do you want to allow app to make changes". When I click YES I then get a message saying "start up is already running. Please try to start later. I then went into settings and tried to switch off AVG (re) starter (there are 2 of these) and AVlaunch componenet and tried again but got to the same point and message. When I went back into settings the AVG (re) starter and Launch component were switched back on. I have tried 3 times now at different times but get the same result.
Thank you for your help so far but any further suggestions?

Chris, could you try restarting your computer and perform repair?
If the same error appears, it is better to reinstall AVG Antivirus free.
Run AVG clear tool as mentioned in this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Uninstall-AVG-software-Clear-Remover) which will remove the AVG Antivirus free program traces.
To install the program, refer this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Install-AVG-AntiVirus-Free).
Keep us posted.

Thank you Balasubramanian.
I followed the instructions to run AVG clear tool. I first checked which version of AVG free I have and it is version 20.1.3112 so it seems AVG clear is the correct programme. I downloaded the file to my computer. When I right clicked on the file it went straight to the User Account Control and I did not get the option to "run as administrator".When I clicked yes in User Account Control a box came up with a green bar going back and forth and that was as far as things went. I have tried 4 or 5 times now and have switched the computer off and left it for a few hours but seem to get stuck at the same point..
Clearly something is wrong! Any ideas what the problem might be?

Thank you Balasubramanian.
After several coffees I managed to get AVG clear to work and install AVG Free. Have carried out a virus scan and thankfully all seems well. so I guess the matter is resolved!
Many thanks to you and your colleagues for your help

if like that there are usually problems with your home (https://spenceronthego.com/) internet connection, but if your connection is okay, try checking your computer's settings regarding internet connection if there is an error message.
