When I activate Web Shield, I can not open gmail.com or Google.com in Firefox. The message I receive is:
"SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER"
I do not have this problem with Safari.
When I dis-activate Web Shield, I can then have access to Google or gmail in Firefox.
What can I do to by-pass Web Shield so that I can continue to use Firefox for safe sites?

I understand that you are unable to access web pages with AVG web shield enabled. Please be informed that this issue got resolved in the latest version of AVG.
Check if AVG program installed on your computer is updated to 18.2 version. If not, please update the same and check if that fix the issue.
