Can't Update Virus Database

Running AVG Antivirus Free Version 16.131.7954 on computer using Windows XP-SP3
Have not received new virus database since August 14th, so program says I am not fully protected.
I note the downloads section of your website shows this is the very latest virus update.
Why is this ?
KarthikeyanKarthikeyan (Foundever)
Hello Steve,

AVG Virus definition updates are released frequently in small patches. This will not be displayed in AVG website.

Only a larger updates will be displayed in our website. The date 14th of Aug is the date, we released a large update.

Please run AVG repair avgclick.me/RepairAVG and check if that fix this update issue.
thomas schraetsthomas schraets
@karthikeyan ... that's absolutely nonsense!!

virus definitions were updated daily until aug 14th, partly twice a day. and with each update you could find the current version number incl. date on AVG website (download center). for example:

iavi15870 ... aug 9th
iavi15871 ... aug 9th
iavi15873 ... aug 10th
...
iavi15881+15882 ... aug 13th
iavi15883+15884 ... aug 14th

there is no iavi15885 since then !!! can you explain that?
thomas schraetsthomas schraets
@karthikeyan ... i think you (and your colleagues in this forum) don't understand the problem we have. several times we got your advices "run AVG repair ... uninstall/reinstall ... update to a newer version ... etc.", but this can't solve the problem!!!

the problem is, that AVG didn't release new virus definitions since aug 14th. why??? are they on vacation???

and because of that, firstly, our AVG programs want to have an update (because of the outdated virus definition database) ... and because of that, secondly, our AVG programs said to us "no new update available" after clicking the update button.

Thomas, we apologize for the inconvenience caused, many customers have reported the same issue and we have escalated it to our developers team to know when they will release the next update. Once we get the reply from them we will cascade it to you.

We would appreciate your patience until we get the response from our developers team.
thomas schraetsthomas schraets
@vishnu ... that's a statement i can work with: "many customers have reported the same issue and we have escalated it to our developers team to know when they will release the next update. Once we get the reply from them we will cascade it to you."

no one else before told this, only ever the advices "repair, uninstall/reinstall, ..."

ok, let's hope they will fix the update issue soon. surfing the internet with virus definitions that are more than 7 days old, is a little bit disturbing.

thanks ... ;o)

Any word from the tech support guys on when this issue will be resolved ?  Its a bit scary using a computer with virus definitions that are at least 8 days old.

Yes @ Avinash. I already gave that information in my original post.

"Running AVG Antivirus Free Version 16.131.7954 on computer using Windows XP-SP3"

There are multiple threads on this forum now all with the same problem that virus definitions are not being updated. On some threads AVG/Avast support staff have said this issue has been escalated to the technical development team. Have they found a soultion yet ?
AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Unfortunately, no. We'd like to collect diagnostic logs from your computer also. I have sent you an email with steps on how to collect and upload the data required for analyzing your issue. Please check your inbox and spam/junk folder as well.

Please also attach a screenshot (http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot) of AVG dashboard showing the error message and the window where is shows last virus database update is on Aug 14th. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.  You could also consider upgrading to latest 18.6 version of AVG to resolve the issue.

I will submit the logs you ask for soon. In the meantime here are the 2 screenshots you requested.AVG Update ErrorAVG Virus Database
Steve SurreySteve Surrey
I have submitted the data log files that you requested using AVG SysInfo. Do I need to uninstall or remove that program now ?
-980888528-980888528 (Avast)
Thank you for the logs, Steve. We appreciate your efforts.

Yes, we need to remove that old version to reinstall latest version of AVG.

Please uninstall AVG using its remover tool
http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product and reinstall it as suggested here: http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-AntiVirus-Free . Check with the update issue and revert us if you need further assistance.
Steve SurreySteve Surrey
You have misunderstood my question. I wanted to know if I needed to uninstall AVG SysInfo used to create the logs. So does AVG SysInfo need to be removed ?

I do not wish to uninstall my current version of AVG itself. I am happy to continue to use that as upgrading to newer versions of AVG can cause issues with Windows XP.

Therefore I wish you to fix the problem that stops my current version of AVG getting virus updates. I am not alone with this problem. There are many posts in this forum about it. I cannot believe the only answer is to update to the latest version of AVG.
-980888528-980888528 (Avast)
Steve,

If you would like, you can delete that AVG Sysinfo folder.

It's not recommended to use AVG 2016. AVG 2018 is the only version we should recommend and help with installing.

We stopped providing updates to the old version and all users should have latest version which is built on Avast technology - this will help users to get the best protection and developers to fix issues faster.

AVG 2018 is compatible with Windows XP SP3. Unfortunately, I do not have other options. Reinstalling AVG to the latest version is the only way to have latest virus definitions. It's the possible solution to protect your device and we are here if you need any help with the latest version of AVG.
thomas schraetsthomas schraets
ranjani, can you tell us a website with informations about that? showing that AVG stopped supporting AVG 2015+2016 ?? i can't find it, nowhere, so i don't think this is the truth !!!

why do your colleagues here in this forum tell us the last days that you are collecting log files from users with AVG 2015+2016, why do you tell us that the issue was escalated to the senior team to find a solution etc. ... this would be absolutely needless if only AVG 2018 runs on our computers since aug 14th (concerning the virus definition updates).

really bad service ...

Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Thomas, our websites doesn't have any information that we stopped the updates for old version.
As soon as we released the latest version, we gradually stopped updates for the old version.
If customers contacts us with any issues regarding old version, we simply suggest to remove it and install the latest version.
If you have old version of AVG, it is not possible for you to get the latest version of virus definitions that we release.
We appreciate your understanding in this matter.
thomas schraetsthomas schraets
ok, i take note of that. but let me say again ... this is an extremely embarassing corporate philosopy !!!!

to release a new product/version, and to stop supporting all older versions at once overnight without giving any informations about that. to wait until the people got an red alert in their previous AVG versions, don't knowing that happened. to give useless advices in this forum.

i'm really shocked. it was the definitely the last time i used AVG for my computers !!!
thomas schraetsthomas schraets
... we are not talking about an unimportant software for writing letters, for reading PDF files, for editting music files etc,. we are talking about a security product with very large impact on his own PC and the PC's from many others (considering the distribution from a virus via email software etc.).
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Thomas, we realize this must be upsetting.
We will definitely work on how to inform customers when there is a major change with the product.
Since, it was a major change with our product, we suggested reinstall. If not, a simple program update would have done it.
Steve SurreySteve Surrey
Why have your colleagues asked me for log files if AVG is not providing virus updates for 2016?

Why did one of your support colleagues write this comment a few days ago?
Alok Kumar (Avast)
Hello All,
We are providing support and updates for the AVG version 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 (We no longer support 2014 and below version).

If, AVG really have stopped support for 2016 there should be a much better way of communicating this to users. Its simply not acceptable merely to stop providing updates without warning or explanation, We shouldnt need to come to this forum to find answers only to be given conflicting information and made to run around doing senseless tasks (creating logs) if its all in vain.

AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Steve, please accept our apologies for the misunderstanding. 2016 version is still supported and we are grateful for providing the logs as requested. We are now escalating them to our developers for analyzing.
Steve SurreySteve Surrey
@ AVINASH

Thank you for your response.

It would really, really help if AVG Support staff could provide accurate and consistent responses. I have lost count how many times the response to whether versions 2015 and newer are supported has changed from 'yes' to 'no' and back again. It makes life very difficult for the users of your products.

I look forward to a final answer from your developers.

Hello.
Have 2015/2016 users received new virus database since 14th August?

'Automatic update' is on. And I am also trying to manual update every day, but I have not updated yet since 14th August.

@Avinash said "We are now escalating them to our developers for analyzing." on 25th August.
Should I still wait for updates?
AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Midori, thank you for posting here. Our developers have confirmed that virus definitions are being released regularly and we recommend you to upgrade to 2018 version to keep your device protected.
midori tokohamidori tokoha
@Avinash, thank you very much.
Unfortunately my PC's CPU is non-SSE2. So I can not install AVG2018.
Support of 2015 is ongoing at the present time, so I would like to use this version as much as possible.

I also read this thread. There were people in trouble with the same issue.
https://support.avg.com/answers?id=9060N000000g8EpQAI
The last writing of this thread was 29th, so this problem still has not been solved yet.
I hope this issue will be resolved as soon as possible.
KarthikeyanKarthikeyan (Foundever)
Sure, this will get resolved as early as possible. Your patience is much appreciated.

From the many threads on this issue, it appears 2015 and 2016, both paid and free are not being updated. This is not an isolated incident but a widespread one. Supposedly log files were gathered from some people last week and being sent to the engineers to look at and fix this issue.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version has not gone well for some users... so from what I have read here, most are waiting for the issue that AVG caused to hopefully fix it and not brick our computers in the process... we still wait... and meanwhile, more Posts are being made daily with this same issue.
