H McCord AVG update not working - CAUSED HEAPS OF PROBLEMS
AVG shows red - needing update. After clicking on Update Now - pop-up says "Update completed successfully" - BUT it still shows the same red - needing update. Clicking on Fix Now - does exactly the same. Tried many times - never updated and took off the red.
I have downloaded a new version of AVG and uninstalled the original from 2015. SAME PROBLEM.

- AVG has LOCKED MY FOLDERS "for editing by unknown user"
- AVG denies access to download pics from camera "you do not have access privileges"
- AVG has added AVG "signature" to my emails
- now says "you have 4 privacy issues" - no idea what that is - but it only has button marked RESOLVE - so I have closed the window as I have no idea that the issues are - what AVG will do - what more problems AVG will cause.
- AVG was working fine until this latest demand for updating -and has gone completely mad since!!! blocking my access to my own stuff !!!!!
We regret for the inconvenience caused. Please let us know if it is a free or paid version of AVG that is installed on your PC. Open AVG dashboard and share a screenshot (http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot) of it. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions. It could be possible that traces from older version of AVG are still present on your PC.
It is the free version - been working ok for some time - only gone mad Aug 2018
This shot was taken on 23 Aug - before downloading a newer version, which my Control Panel shows was done on 25 Aug 2018. So the problem was there from the older version. Hope this helps.
Here is the 'signature' that AVG is now putting on all my emails!!!! How do I remove this???

and AVG's 'read only' on folders - [I never had that on anything before, something I don't use as nobody else uses my computer]
Now I have found the AVG block to accessing my files because of "locked for editing by: Unknown User" -
To determine which AVG component is blocking access, please disable each AVG component individually and try to access the file for editing. Open AVG, click on Menu > Settings > Components. And use the On/Off slider against each component to disable them.
@Bruce, please note that it is always recommended to use latest version of AVG to enjoy new protection features.

Now I have a different icon, like an amoeba.I can't understand the privacy policy ...........it is more than 60 pages! and a maze of other links - I am not a techy.
It seems that instead of AVG, you have installed Avast free AntiVirus.
This program is different from the AVG free AntiVirus.

Yes, we are the same company but the support and services are separate for both. I would recommend to use AVG Antivirus free for your computer protection.
You can go to control panel > program and features > look for Avast Antivirus and uninstall it. After that, you can click here for the instruction to download/install AVG Antivirus Free.

and I didn't notice that I had been re-directed to download Avast for some reason
- I was just following the instructions to "...download and install AVG Anti Virus free:"
....and "After re installing AVG free,...."
Is it any wonder I am confused.

Start button showed AVG and All Programs highlighted in pink [as shown earlier]
AVG shows "you're protected" with a tick
BUT also shows "AVG is now in PASSIVE mode Avast antivirus is running on your PC"
- whatever is passive mode?
- why is it saying Avast is still on here???? - it is not showing in control panel or anywhere???
What has happened now???

I am 5 days down the track and it is still not OK
I missed your previous message, which is why I was unable to acknowledge it. The Avast Antivirus traces might be running in your computer background which is reason for AVG Passive mode.
Let me know if you had rebooted your computer after Avast Antivirus uninstallation.

Now - as there was also a prompt for a Google Toolbar, I agreed to that BUT there is no additional toolbar so I right clicked on the current one - which said "open all (85)" never seen before, so I clicked on that - and it has opened millions of tabs [probably 85] - some I have never seen before [eg contactless bus payments!], some news item from 2015, the Router page from an old router years ago, and a couple of gardening YouTube items which are still talking!! Looks like another 5 days of trying to sort it out. How on earth are these here, and even if they were sitting there invisibly all this time, how have the reboots not cancelled them???

It seems that the traces of Avast is still present on your computer and that is why AVG went into passive mode, so it will not conflict with each other.
Go to the below location and remove all the Avast traces completely from your computer.
C:\Programdata\Avast
C:\Program files (X86)\Avast
C:\users\user name\appdata\local
Restart your computer and check if AVG is out of passive mode.
Do I just DELETE whatever items are there? Why has the Remover not removed them??
Program files (x86) only shows AVG
Program files shows Avast Software folder and millions of things inside that

What should I do??
Then check if AVG Antivirus free program still shows in passive mode. If it still stays in passive mode, then click on "Fix now" to get the program back to normal mode.
Deleting file: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\aswFW.sys" whatever that might be
Then it annouced "The product was successfully uninstalled. some files may stay in their current locations until the next reboot, though." So of course I rebooted.
It returned in passive mode again....and showed "We strongly reommend you turn on our active protection" which I wasn't expecting, so I clicked Yes for that.
From showing -
- Computer NOT protected and
- Web&Email NOT protected
- it went to -- Computer "not protected" still in red -overwritten with "protected" in white !!
- Web&Email NOT protected
- PROTECTION IS DISABLED [in red]
- Protection will be automatically enabled after PC restart [despite the reboot just having been done]
- Now it showed the "FIX NOW" that you mentioned, so I clicked on that.
Then it showed "You have basic protection" in green - apparently any more has to be paid forand the pop-up on the Taskbar showed "You are protected" = it would seem to be back to the situation it was before 21 Aug... presumably the updates will happen automatically as before.
- Program Files now shows AVG\Antivirus with 12 subfolders. - dated 31/8/18 [today]
- Program Files (x86) shows AVG\UiDll\2171 - dated 11/10/15, the date of the original AVG that failed to update at the beginning of this saga. [Goodness knows if I need this now, nor whether it should be in a separate place - I am not a techy]
- I don't see Avast anywhere at the moment, so hopefully that incorrectly instructed download has gone.
So - is it OK now or not?After 10 days of problems - I want to be sure there are no more problems with this, I am not on the payroll and can't be spending days and days on this.
Can someone tell me if there is some easy way to remove all the locks that AVG put on my folders [explained at the beginning of this item] - everything is READ ONLY now - to go through each one is going to take another 10 days and drive me round the bend.
170 sensitive documents !!!
- listed under 'employment' - 'travel' - 'other' - despite no folders called any of this
- and despite most of them being copies of news articles - so this does not even make sense
The red button says "RESOLVE" - WITH NO INFO ON WHAT THIS DOES !!! -IS THIS GOING TO LOCK MY DOCUMENTS AS WELL ????????

HELP - why is this not working like before - why now is it doing new things with no info on the repercussions as it leads the user to a course of action without being able to know what will happen!!
