Icarus.exe

I've just got a message from my Antimalware program, that it's blocked Icarus.exe as malware and I found it in the AVG files. Why is it there,if it's malware?
Sarath PriyanSarath Priyan (Sitel)
Hi Barbara,

If a file is detected as a potential threat, AVG will detect and prompt a threat pop-up.

To check the path of detection, click on 'see details' and share us the screenshot for further assistance.

You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on "Answer" & then click on the "Image" [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

I have no idea what icarus.exe is but it appeared after the most recent update.   Some clarity might help here please.

It is located at C:/Windows/System32

My custom AVAST settings ask for permission for icarus.exe to open an outgoing connection to 69.94.77.202.  This is an IP Address managed by RIPE communications out of Amsterdam. I have blocked it since I don't know what it is.

It appears to be connected to AVAST installer. Its' DigiCert SHA256 certificate is signed by AVAST (on June 4, 2020).

I have seen other posts similar to this. I have the same issue. So is it part of AVG or not? Or was this malware shipped with the AVG update (it is signed as being from AVG)?
Rakshith RajkumarRakshith Rajkumar (AVG)
Hello Brett

We will certainly check that for you.
We are getting more insights about this issue to find out the root-cause.
You can help us by providing the information of when did this happen and more.
You can also share the screenshot of the pop you received.
Thank you.

Seriously, can anyone trust AVG and Avast anymore? It doesn't seem that way, especially with how updates appear to be rushed out with significant problems that have to be mopped up after it disrupts so many people's computer systems. This icarus.exe issue is almost the last straw.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Michael, we will help you with that.
Icarus.exe is actually related to the recent AVG TuneUp 20.1 version.
It is legitimate file and you shouldn't experience any issues due to it.
Keith SwainKeith Swain
Then why couldn't you answer this straight away? If it is an AVG program (e.g. TuneUp) you should ALREADY KNOW ABOUT IT and not need all those questions above re screen shots etc.

I've used AVG for MANY years now and recommend to all my clients and get them to instal it but really, this is NOT good.

(As well as your recent chnage to the TuneUp program that removes the 30 odd full offerings for tweaking windows etc. I've had ot buy another Tweaking program now as you have removed that from TuneUp - which I pay for seperately in my subscription.)

I won't stop using AVG now but really, the above is NOT good...User-added imageUser-added image

This pop is still coming up after the current update Ver 20.5.313.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hi Marion,

We would like to clarify that 'Icarus.exe' is actually related to the recent AVG TuneUp 20.1 version.
The reason you are getting popup from Enhanced Firewall is because of its settings that you set up.
Open AVG Internet Security program window.
Click on "Menu->Settings->Full Protection->Enhanced Firewall".
Check whether any option chosen as 'Ask'.
If yes, click on it and select as 'Auto-Decide'.
Since 'Ask' was chosen, you get popup from AVG firewall each time whenever icarus.exe is trying to communicate on your PC.
This will happen for any other application that is trying to connect to your PC.
If you choose 'Auto-Decide', AVG firewall will itself decide which communication to be allowed or denied.
Thank you.

Balasubramanian,

What does icarus.exe do?  I don't trust it just because it's related to an avg update

Rakshith RajkumarRakshith Rajkumar (AVG)
Hi Lou,

Thank you for reaching out to us.
The explanations are clearly mentioned in the previous comments.
Please do not worry, this is was just a glitch when there was an update with the AVG TuneUp.
And it has been fixed immediately.
If you are getting this pop up, I request you to create your own post.
So that we can locate your account and help you accordingly.

There is no "Full Protection" within the settings menu of AVG PC Tuneup, for me.  I still get windows security popups notifying that icarus.exe was blocked.  I do not have an AVG Internet Security application on my machine, just PC Tuneup
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Lou, we would like to clarify that 'icarus.exe' is a legit service of AVG TuneUp 20.1 version.
It will be constantly running in the background when you have AVG TuneUp 20.1 version installed.
Could you share the screenshot (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?&supportType=home&urlName=AVG-Create-screenshot) of the popup that says 'icraus.exe was blocked"?
You can post the screenshot by clicking on 'image symbol' from 'Answer' field.
If you create your own post on community, it will be easy for us to pull up your account and send email instruction, if necessary.

I think icarus is spyware collecting information for AVG to sell on to software developers. I never received a clean answer when I asked about it!
