Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 AVG AntiVirus Free 20.6.3135
Somehow, I no longer see the icon for AVG on the pull-down context menu for either a folder or a file. This means I have to look very carefully for "Scan selected items for viruses", which is not in the same place for folders versus files. I have to be careful because I have two other anti-virus applications, both of which are secondary to AVG and neither of which operates in the background.
The AVG icon appears in the Windows tray (Notification Area) and in my Start menu but not in any context menu. Does anyone know how I can get the icon in my context menus?
This isn't the expected behaviour of AVG Antivirus Free. We'll certainly look into this and help you. Please share us the screenshot/snapshot of your "Context Menu", so that we can have better understanding. Refer to this article to take a screenshot. You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Attached are two .jpeg files showing context files with the entry for AVG highlighted. One was generated from a folder; the ohter was generated from a .txt file.
When I installed AVG AntiVirus Free 20.6.3135 on 5 August 2020, I downloaded the offline installer from [https://www.avg.com/download-thank-you.php?product=FREEGSR-OFFLINE]. I then disabled my Internet connection, removed the prior version of AVG, and installed the new version (with appropriate Windows restarts). I then archived the offine installer.
Just now, I retrieved my archived offline installer and -- after first removing AVG -- used the installer to reinstall AVG. That did NOT resolved my problem.
Please remove offline installer (archived), uninstall your AVG Antivirus using our Clear tool, which will remove all traces of AVG Antivirus Free in your computer. Refer to this article to uninstall AVG Antivirus Free using our AVG Clear tool. Also, as it isn't recommended to have more than one security program in a computer, we request you to uninstall the Malwarebytes program. Once your AVG Antivirus Free has been uninstalled using our Clear tool, please use the online installer to install AVG Antivirus Free. I did as you requested, "cleaning" out AVG and then installing via you stub installer. The problem still exists.
I suspect this is a Windows 7 problem since other applications are missing icons in the folder and file context menus. I was hoping you could help me fix the problem for AVG in a way that would suggest how to fix it for the other applications.
NOTE WELL: While both Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials are installed on my PC, they are both disabled. I use them -- along with AVG -- only to check newly downloaded files, running each separately. Each application checks for viruses and malware differently. I will not remove either Malwarebytes or Microsoft Security Essentials.
Also note that I really dislike stub installers. For AVG, this is important. After "cleaning" out AVG, I had to remain connected to the Internet without any active anti-virus application.
I understand your concern, David Since this is also happening to some applications, I request you to contact the Windows support regarding this. When ever AVG is temporarily disabled or uninstalled for troubleshooting purpose, the Windows Defender will keep you protected. You do not have to worry about that.
This is still a problem. The program ShellExView from Nirsoft at [http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html] allowed me to open the data handler in my Windows registry for AVG's entry in context menus. The data handler registry entry contains a pointer to ashShell.dll, which does not contain the AVG icon. Could this not be the cause of my problem?
Thank you for the information, David. We'll certainly check and help you. We've sent you an email with further details. Please check your inbox/spam folders to find the email and use it to get back to us. Thank you and keep us updated.
