When I try to log in to my account from my desktop computer, I am told there is a code sent to the Authenticator app, presumably on my  phone. Well I do have an AVG app on the phone, but there is no
code to be found there. So how am i supposed to log in to the account? Couldn't they send me a text message? or an email???

You've reached the AVG community support forum.
From your description, we assume that you've enabled the 2 Step Verification (2FA) for your AVG My Account Login.
When you enable 2-step verification for your AVG My Account, you need to enter your password and a verification code from the Google Authenticator app each time you sign in.
Please refer to this article for detailed instructions to gain access to your AVG My Account through 2 Step Verification.
