I did not ask to have AVG Secure Browser installed on my computer but it suddenly showed up today, I presume as part of an update to AVG Anti-virus, and made itself my default browser. I do not want it and I am very angry that it was effectively forced on me. The directions on the AVG website say to uninstall it using add/remove programs. This did not work for me. I get a message saying that I do not have sufficient permission and to contact my system administrator. I am the only user on my computer so there is no system administrator to contact. I read about other people having the same issue so this is clearly not an isolated issue. How do I completely remove this software from my computer? It is behaving more like malware than like software from a legitimate software company. Thank you.
We will help you in this. Whenever you install or update the AVG, 'Install & set as default' option will be auto selected. It will be visible in the main interface while installing.
The reason why you are getting a message 'You do not have sufficient access to uninstall program. Please contact your system administrator.' is because of UAC while is configured to always require credentials.
You can set your preferred browser as a Default Browser in it's settings.
Or kindly follow the below steps to uninstall the application. a. Locate the program icon, right-click and select as “Run as administrator” b. When the User Account Control (UAC) message is displayed, do one of the following: i. If you are logged on as a standard user, or if UAC is configured to always require credentials, enter the appropriate administrative credentials, and then click OK. ii. If you are logged on as an administrator and UAC is not configured to always require credentials, click “Yes” to start the application. c. Proceed with the un-installation and check if the issue gets fixed.
Thank you. Unfortunately those directions do not work for me. Here's what I did:
1. I made sure that AVG Secure Browser is not my default browser. I confirmed this by checking that when I run AVG Secure Browser it asks me if I want to make it my default browser. I also checked that when I click on a link in, say, a Word document, it does not come up in AVG's browser.
2. I followed your directions to run AVG Secure Browser as administrator (I did get the UAC message and I selected "yes") and then tried to uninstall it using the "Programs and Features" interface. I again get a message saying "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall AVG Secure Browser. Please contact your system administrator." See the screen shot below.
3. I looked at the directions on this page: https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlName=Uninstall-AVG-Secure-Browser&supportType=home and went to the Windows 7 section. I tried to follow these directions but I do not get the UAC referenced in step 5. I just get the error message shown in the screen shot above.
I just found a solution that appears to have worked. I'll post it here for anyone else that may come across this thread:
1. I opened Windows Explorer and navigated to C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\Browser\
2. In that folder I found a file called "AVGBrowserUninstall.exe."
3. I ran that file and it uninstalled the browser. I did not even have to run it as administrator.
The final irony: at the end of the uninstall I got a message asking me if I'd be willing to tell AVG why I uninstalled their browser. I clicked "yes" and it took me to a Typeform website with the message "the URL you entered doesn’t exist." AVG clearly has some SERIOUS quality control issues with the AVG Secure Browser. I hope this isn't a reflection of the quality of their other software!
I am glad that you issue has been resolved, Bruce. I appreciate your time and effort in this. You can even give the feedback for the uninstallation to us. Please feel free to contact us if you have any issues in the future.
