Can't uninstall AVG secure browser

Hi there,

I wonder if anyone can help me. Last time I updated my AVG Free virus software, it automatically installed AVG Secure Browser, which I didn't want, and now I can't uninstall it. It launches on start-up, but it doesn't appear in my apps list so I can't uninstall it. The only way I can find it is on the apps list that I get by right-clicking on settings, but the uninstall option is greyed out. I have tried uninstalling it via the command prompt (running as administrator), but it says access is denied. I also tried deleting the contents of %appdata% and %programdata% but it said I didn't have administrator privileges (this is a personal computer and I am the only person that uses it). I have tried reinstalling it but that doesn't help either. I have also tried uninstalling my AVG antivirus just in case that was causing it (and then reinstalling), but no luck. I'm running the latest version of Windows 10. Anyone got any ideas? I was only using AVG Free so I can't submit a support ticket.

Just to confirm for anyone else who finds this thread, AVG resolved this through remote support. The support guys confirmed that something had gone wrong during the uninstallation process. They took over my computer and successfully deleted the secure browser, but in the process also wiped my taskbar, my profiles and extensions in other browsers, and various other settings. It was a proper mess that took a big chunk of my day to resolve, and was totally unnecessary. I'd strongly suggest that AVG allows users to opt in to downloading the browser, rather than stealthily hiding an opt-out box in the update process.

JB, we're sorry to know about the inconvenience that you have experienced.

However, we can assure you that this shouldn't have happened due to removal of AVG Secure Browser as the technician will be removing the files that are related to AVG Secure Browser.

We request you to restore the changes, if you have a system restore point. Then check for the issue again.

Thank you.

Thanks Santhosh. Whether or not it should have happened, it did - as a direct result of the dodgy software and the technician's work to remove it. (a second technician told me it was to do with a safe mode restart he performed). Anyway, as I said, I restored everything from backups and it's resolved now, but the whole episode was a massive waste of time, caused by AVG sneaking software I didn't want onto my computer. Users should be given the option to opt into extra software during updates, then these problems would be much less likely to arise and it would save us all time and money.
