Antivirus causes computer to freeze up

The antivirus was making my computer freeze up at random times. I've been trying to meet some deadlines for work but the freezes made it impossible. The freeze-ups happened whether I had a lot going on the computer or not. I sat with task manager being the only thing open and watched the processes. AVG browser and antivirus continued to spike, open multiple processes, then close, then open again. It was all over the place. The instabilities couldn't be rectified with repairs so I uninstalled both. I've paid for this and have had nothing but problems. What can I do about a refund?
