If the issue persists, please try to repair AVG ( http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG ) and check if it is working fine.

I then tried the repair option but clicking on change displays a progress bar for an operation that does not complete, so I never get the repair option.

Please click on this link http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/AVG_Antivirus_Free_692.exe to download the setup file for AVG 2016 free version and run it to upgrade AVG to latest version.
