problem with saving word documents

I have a pc running windows xp sp 3, office 2000 and avg 2014 free.

When I am saving a word document I get an error "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error" which is possibly caused by avg. I think avg is the problem as when I temporarily disable avg, word saves documents ok, when avg is restored saving documents is a problem. I also went into avg advanced settings and removed .DO* from the list of file extensions to scan and word works normally.

I have run a full system scan and nothing was found. I have also scanned with malwarebytes and again nothing was found.

Please help to resolve this problem.

Thanks

Hi Peter,
In order to analyze it please provide us with diagnostic output using this tool and please add detailed description of issue.
Thanks

Hello

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I have tried to run the analysis tool but unfortunately it fails to complete. An error message 'An exception occured. The dump has been saved to AutoExec_date-time.dmp' appears during the run and the program never terminates.

I have replicated the Word saving files issue on another computer also running XP and Office 2000 but with AVG free 2015. Again temporarily disabling AVG or removing checks on files with .DO* extensions removes the problem.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Peter,
If you induces same on different PC please send us diagnostic output from that PC.
Thanks

I just installed AVG Free 2015 about 2 days ago and have already gotten this error 3 times. The bad part is that if you are not paying attention you lose the original Word document because the name gets changed to the name of the temporary file. I am running Windows XP and MS Office 2007 with SP1. Again the error is "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission errror."

I thought maybe it was in how fast I was using ctrl-s to do the save. I ran several tests and still even after doing a "save as AVG-Save-Test.doc", making a minor change to this very small document, and waiting an entire minute I still got the error!

This appears to be a problem with AVG under Windows XP. I tried recreating the problem several times with AVG FREE 2015 under Windows 7. Thus far I have not been able to recreate the problem.

I think you only get the error if you save once and then save again quickly

If you get the error:
“Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error”
Select OK
Do you want to retry: YES
Then type or copy in the correct file name.
Select SAVE

Hi Sally,
In order to analyze it please provide us with diagnostic output (gather it right after inducing issue) using this tool and please add detailed description of issue.
Thanks

Here is the description - exactly as described above. Please read this blog from the start. I am running Windows XP SP3 and MS Word 2007. Attached is request file.

When I am saving a word document I get an error "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error" which is.. caused by avg.  Given that this problem was reported in October of 2014 with no resolution, I will probably uninstall AVG FREE 2015 and use some other antivirus solution. OK shoot, I have the diagnostic output saved, so how do I send it to you? I am not going to run it again, it took much longer than "a few minutes."

I uploaded the diagnostic output in dropbox.

I think this just rolled too far. So again, I uploaded the diagnostic output to dropbox. See

I'm having exactly this same problem, and I've spent hours and hours and hours on it as it seems to be a common problem and different people find different solutions, but none of them worked for me. Finally found a site that suggested the problem is antivirus, so I tried temporarily disabling AVG, and it worked fine. Enabled AVG and I got the errors again.

I once lost a whole morning's work because of this problem.

PLEASE fix it.

Hi all,
Can you please try if this issue occours even with latest AVG version?
If yes please provide us with Process monitor log as described in http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-forums?sec=thread&act=show&id=85871 .
Thanks
Gretchen BeckerGretchen Becker
Yes it still occurs with AVG 2015.

It would be nice if your link would go to a specific post instead of the all the forums with their thousands of posts.

I got the Process Monitor, but I don't have access to online storage.

I don't have time for all this right now. I don't know where the log file is. If I find it, I have to download another file and go through another procedure I'm not familiar with to compress it. I'll just live with this, disabling AVG when I need to Save, until my taxes are done and then I'll come back. Maybe you will have fixed it by then.

What's the log file named?

BTW, I have Windows XP.

ZbynekZbynek (Avast)
Default file name is Logfile.PML tool in linked article should compress it for you. When you have time please try upload it to us and share file name here so I can forward it to our developers.
Thanks for you cooperation.

I had same problem running Word 2007 on an XP laptop. The solution described by Peter Jones above worked. Agree that AVG should solve this problem instead of leaving users vulnerable to this. Many will never solve the problem at all because they won't suspect the anti-virus. And so they'll go on losing documents and time due to this bug. As Peter suggested, AVG please fix this now.

In case anyone wants more detail on the steps required, here they are written out:
Opened AVG, went to Options, chose Advanced Settings, then Scans, then Specific Files or Folders Scan, Scan Settings, All file types, Define excluded extensions: then add the following entries, separated by a semicolon:
do*; doc;

Update on this issue. It turns out to be more complicated. AVG settings were not the issue. The issue appears to be related to editing Word documents on external drives or removable media, such a Sandisk. And the solution appears to be to edit files on the hard drive, and then copy them back to the external storage. Apparently Word 2007 simply can not handle editing and saving to external media.

Hi John,
I am happy to see that your issue is resolved.
Thanks for posting back.

I don't use AVG (I'm on Avast), but I've been getting the same problem for the last month or so, so AVG isn't the culprit here. And, in the last few hours, a new wrinkle has developed: I'll be working on a document, do a few saves which work fine, then I'll get the "permissions error" rubbish - and find that the file has suddenly changed itself to Read-Only, a setting I NEVER use.

I'll also respectfully burst the "external drives or removable media" bubble, too - all the documents I'm having the trouble with are on my computer's hard-drive, and being saved back to it...

Running Windows 10 and having same issues as users above:  after installing a routine update in the last few days, attempts to edit and save in Word [ " ... file permission error"] and Excel ["... sharing violation"] make my documents useless.  Also "read only"  on many.  Suggests trying to save to a different file, which doesn't work.  I've never restricted or qualified these documents in any way.

I've been a loyal subscriber and unpaid salesman for AVG for years and would hate to leave over this.  I'm going to try to find the update and uninstall, but if not successful, will have to pay for help because keeping my clients depends on being able to use these docs.

HI,

I bought AVG and after an update recently, started getting this. This has nothing to do with files coming in from external storage or anything else. I can create new Word docs from scratch and reproduce this error. When I uninstall AVG, EVERYTHING works fine and no problems with saves. I reinstall it, problem comes back. Period.

Using WIn10 Home and AVG 806 (it's what the file name is). I've removed AVG so cannot get the version but it's within the last week.

It's surprising why AVG can't fix this. Win10 isn't the best OS but as easy as this issue is to reproduce, a software company shouldn't take this long to figure this out.
